About this project
My name is Eric Fogel and I'm an LA based filmmaker with over twenty years of animation experience. I've created several animated series; the first, MTV'S The Head, I cooked up at the tender age of twenty four.
I also co-created Glenn Martin DDS for Nickelodeon...
And most notably the hit show Celebrity Deathmatch for MTV.
Deathmatch was considered ground-breaking television back in its day – serving up a healthy blend of stop-motion violence, comedy and pop culture satire way before Robot Chicken ever got hatched.
As you may have guessed, I LOVE Stop-motion animation. As painstaking as it actually is, the art of moving poseable figures one frame at a time has always been my favorite form of animation. As a kid, I was easily seduced by the tactile, visceral quality of the original King Kong and the work of Ray Harryhausen. These were the movies that inspired me to become a filmmaker. But with the advent of computer animation it appeared as though stop-motion was getting pushed to the side -- becoming the “red-headed step child” of animation if you will. With the success of Celebrity Deathmatch I feel at least partially responsible for keeping alive an art form which has become overshadowed by its more fluid CG counterpart.
With three out of five of this year's Academy Award nominees for best animated feature being Frankenweenie, Pirates and ParaNorman, I am happy to report that stop-motion is alive and well, having cemented its place in the competitive animation landscape. With that in mind, I feel the time is right to push the medium further and explore an arena previously untouched by stop-motion animation – the action/adventure genre. Havoc will be the first film of its kind...but what is it?
Havoc is a pulse-pounding, stop-motion, action movie that pits a lone warrior, against a vicious mutant horde. At stake: his survival AND the fate of humankind! Part human, part genetic mutation, Havoc is a man at odds with the brutal, post-apocalyptic landscape he calls home. He’s an underdog you can’t help but root for, a hero who won’t truly succeed until learns to embrace his own humanity. Havoc is everything that I love about stop-motion animation – incredible detail, rich storytelling, kick-ass characters. It’s the culmination of a dream of mine that spans decades.
Your investment in this project will go towards the production of a three minute film which will introduce Havoc, as well as the tone and visual style of the world he lives in. Once complete, this “proof of concept” film will be shopped to studios in order to secure a backer for the feature film. As I am essentially breaking new ground in stop-motion animation -- inventing a world and characters that are totally unique -- the short film will be essential in allowing studio execs to visualize the movie.
I truly appreciate your time and consideration in choosing to support Havoc. I’ve been in the business long enough to know that creating something new and different is never easy but always worth it. So if you love stop-motion animation as much as I do, or you're a Deathmatch fan, or maybe you just get excited about being part of something wholly original, (or all of the above!) then please jump on board. Thank you!
Risks and challenges
The primary challenge in producing the Havoc short film will be to create animation that is FEATURE QUALITY on a relatively small budget. This is essential in order to instill in buyers the confidence that a feature length version of the film will be nothing short of extraordinary. Based on my experience and track record in producing ground-breaking animation for a price, I feel confident in my ability to not only achieve but to exceed my goal in creating a one of a kind stop-motion film.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Some time in the future an object from outer space collides with Earth, causings catastrophic damage and wiping out most of the Earth's population. In this hostile new world only the strong survive.
In the year 3001, environmental decay has reduced Earth’s atmosphere to an un-breathable toxic gas, killing off nearly two thirds of the population. For the remaining humans, survival is a constant struggle.
Earth has become a harsh, desolate wasteland inhabited by human stragglers. They tough it out on the planet’s surface using their wits, bravery and brute strength to stay alive. Some form tribes and small communities.Others actually evolve. The strongest humans develop into a new species capable of surviving the hostile world --Mutanoids:An ultra-violent, war-mongering version of the human race. The weaker, purebred inhabitants fall prey to the powerful Mutanoid hordes.Either turned into slaves or food, it is clear that humans are now the endangered species. But many refuse to submit to their aggressive counterparts. They fight back, barely managing to hang on, waiting for some bastion of hope.
Hope exists in the form of Omnibus, a huge orbiting space station which houses the remnants of our once great nations. From on high the former leaders of Earth hatch a plan to save their decaying world. They order the construction of a series of massive air scrubbers, designed to replenish the earth’s atmosphere.
To protect their “clean air initiative,” they also bio-engineer an army of human/mutant hybrids called Earth Guards. These elite soldiers are programmed to safeguard the construction of the atmospheric processors. The prototype Earth Guard is a huge, battle-ready warrior known as H-861, code named “Havoc.”
Havoc lives up to the scientists’ expectations and exceeds them. Not simply the mindless automaton that they had designed him to be, Havoc is capable of free thought and self-expression; able to display fear, sorrow, anger and even hatred.
Havoc ultimately proves too difficult to command and impossible to control and is slated for termination. His fellow Earth Guards turn on him but he fights back and destroys them all.
Cast adrift, forced to fend for himself in the barren wasteland, Havoc chooses a new mission:To protect the surviving humans of Earth against the marauding mutant hordes. In doing so he’ll not only insure the fate of mankind but discover his own lost humanity as well.
At times Havoc seems to have a messed up mutant arm and at other times is sporting a robotic arm. What's the deal?
Havoc is a human/mutant hybrid, born with a deformed left arm that is incredibly dangerous when used in... battle. At a certain point in the timeline Havoc must sacrifice the arm to save himself and is later fitted with a new and imporved biomechanical one, tricked out with all sorts of kick-ass weaponry.
Havoc's heightened abilities allow him to sense danger and react accordingly. When trouble brews, Havoc's defenses instinctively kick in and his eyes glow white hot. In "combat" mode he is able to target his apponents and locate their vulnerable spots. This really sucks for bad guys as ususally there's not much left of them when Havoc is done.
