About

The Game:

Dusk to Midnight is a GM-less tabletop rpg about doomed mech soldiers in a losing war. It's a game about relationships, both with your fellow soldiers and with the war itself.

The game uses a unique dice mechanic where your stats are a number 1-6 that represent your relationship with different aspects of your life: the war, your mech, the special skill you have, and each of your fellow pilots. A low number represents a very negative feeling towards that thing, and a high number is very positive.

When you make a move in Dusk to Midnight, you roll 1d6, and take the difference between the stat you're rolling and the die result. The higher that difference is, the better your outcome. Because of this, the most beneficial stats are the extreme numbers, whether they are a 1 or a 6.

In Dusk to Midnight, your characters will lose the war they have been fighting for who knows how long, but it doesn't have to be a tragedy. There's a certain kind of calm in the knowledge as a player that your fate is fixed. Much like real war, there's no point in gaming the system, as everyone involved has been doomed from the start. This lets players create very interesting stories that let their characters be vulnerable and make mistakes.

You can download a free .txt file of the game here, and you can hear an actual-play with the cast of The Room Where It Happened podcast right here. You can also hear the cast of Friends at the Table play DtM right here, however you must support their patreon at $5 or higher to access it.

The Zine:

The Disk to Midnight zine will be A6 sized, perfect for carrying around anywhere you might need a sad game about mechs. It will be printed by Mixam. The layout will be done by me, and the cover art will be done by Julia, a friend of mine and an incredible artist.

The Author:

My name is Riley Rethal, and I am a tabletop game designer from Atlanta, Georgia! I just got back from an amazing summer as the tabletop rpg specialist at a sleepaway camp, where I got the chance to play some very cool games with some incredible 10-15 year old campers.

Some other games I've written are:

  •  The Riot Starts, a gm-less game inspired by the musical Hadestown about community and revolution in the capitalist hell of the underworld.
  •  איכה (ayekah), a two-player game about a god and their creation, inspired by a more Jewish idea of a relationship with God.
  •  Odyssey, a gm-less game where all players play one character on a long and perilous journey home.
  •  Even More Spiders, a hack of John Harper's Lasers & Feelings based on Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.
  • I also kickstarted the zine Synthesis as part of #zinequest in February, which you can still buy in pdf form here

You can find all the games I've written (that's right, there are more) at metagame.itch.io, and you can find my twitter @jaceaddax.

This October, I'm going to be attending Big Bad Con, and then a week later I'm going to be a guest (!!!) at Multiverse Con. I'd really like to have some print copies of Dusk to Midnight that I can sell there, which is a big reason I'm doing this kickstarter when I am.

The Plan:

I learned a lot about fulfillment and timelines while running my first kickstarter, and I'm confident that this one will go much smoother with regard to shipping on time. This time, I have the game fully written before launching the campaign, and the layout is already partially done as well.

The timeline will go like this:

  • August 6th - campaign begins!
  • August 26th - campaign ends.
  • September 9th - kickstarter sends me the project funds & I order the zines
  • September 23rd - the zines arrive and fulfillment begins!

Where will the money go?

  •  $300: writing & layout compensation for myself.
  •  $200: cover art.
  •  $175: printing zines.
  •  $150: shipping zines.
  •  $100: kickstarter fees.
  •  $75: buffer.

Risks and challenges

The game is already fully written and the entire layout should be done before the kickstarter campaign ends, so the main risk in this project will be fulfillment. I will be ordering these zines from Mixam, so they will have to get to me on time, and then I will have to put them in labeled envelopes and send them to everyone, which could take longer than expected, but still should not be a huge problem.
