A retro styled beat-em-up of truly epic proportions.

OUYA Version is GO!

Thanks to your hard work promoting FIST OF AWESOME in the #myouyagame competition the lovely folks over at OUYA are giving me a development console worth $800! WOOOOOHOOOO!

Note: My aim is that everyone from the £10 tier up will get a free copy of the game for OUYA, although that's dependant on gifting being supported in the OUYA eco-system.

PC & Mac Versions Are GO!

As we've passed the £7,000 mark the PC & Mac versions are officially confirmed and any tier £10 and up automagically includes a free copy of both versions!

WOOOOOHOOOOOO!
WOOOOOHOOOOOO!

Stretch Goals!

We now find ourselves in the enviable situation of being able to consider stretch goals. The original £5,000 was always intended to cover completion of the iOS and Android versions, so any extra money will go towards versions for other platforms.

£7,000 - The FIST OF AWESOME you know and love but running on your shiny PC or Mac!

£12,000 - FIST OF AWESOME: GRIZZLY EDITION. A specially tailored and extended version for PC and Mac (and possibly OUYA, please see below). One of the most exciting features being local multiplayer with new playable characters from Tim's family!

How can I get the PC & Mac versions?

I've added a £10 tier which includes DRM-free copies of the PC & Mac versions (regular or GRIZZLY). The reward is automatically included in all higher tiers, including the £15 soundtrack tier.

Please note the release date for the PC and Mac version will be a few months after the iOS and Android versions, likely around Summer 2013.

OUYA

A lot of you have contacted me hoping for an OUYA release of FIST OF AWESOME. If you'd like to see it happen PLEASE RETWEET THIS TWEET:

https://twitter.com/nicollhunt/status/275336019241472000

The OUYA guys are giving away 10 developer kits to projects that get their attention, and I'd very much like FIST OF AWESOME to be one of those projects.

If I get a developer kit I'll use the PC & Mac build as a base for the OUYA version.

My aim is that everyone from the £10 tier up would get a free copy of the game for OUYA, although that's dependant on gifting being supported in the OUYA eco-system.

We Won Kick Assist!

Thanks to everyone who voted for FIST OF AWESOME in the Kick Assist competition. An extra $500 was pledged to the project by the lovely Magic Pixel guys as a result of your help!

The Game

FIST OF AWESOME is a time-travelling-lumberjack-em-up, a sorely underrepresented genre by anyone's metric. It's a modern homage to classics like Streets of Rage and Final Fight, but with more time travel and lumberjacks.

The hero, Tim Burr, is a forest dwelling tree feller who gets caught up in a needlessly complex interstellar plot to enslave Earth by populating history with homicidal wild animals  The game takes place over a number of time periods, features original 2D art and animation throughout, and is to my knowledge, the only game that lets you punch a full grown grizzly bear in the face.

  • Humour - A delirious sense of humour reverberates throughout the whole storyline and action packed gameplay.
Medieval Time Period

  • Revolutionary Controls - The gesture based combat system allows for fast reactions, huge combos and an unparelled move set.
Tim Burr's Home Time Period

  • Amazing Graphics - The fast paced action is brought to life with gloriously retro-style graphics and animation.
Prehistoric Time Period

  • Bombastic Soundtrack - Showcasing the incredible talents of Echolevel aka Brendan Ratliff the FIST OF AWESOME music brings back hazy memories of feeding coin after coin into cabinets in smokey arcades.

FIST OF AWESOME will launch on iOS and Android, with other platforms to follow.

Gameplay

Great fighting games hinge on the accuracy, responsiveness and raw 'feeling' of their controls. FIST OF AWESOME is the first touchscreen beat-em-up to take seriously the challenge of creating fluid and intuitive controls without falling on the crutch of virtual buttons.

Movement Tutorial
Movement Tutorial

Using a series of simple gestures a wide suite of moves is opened up to the player. For example: to jump, swipe up; to jump kick, swipe up then tap.

The primary goal of the system is to ensure that you never look at the placement of your fingers to pull off any move. Touchscreen violence will never be the same again.

Current Progress

FIST OF AWESOME is currently in an 'alpha' state. The vast majority of work on the tool chain, game engine and art style is complete and the game is gloriously playable. The bulk of what remains is generating backdrops, animating characters, ensuring compatibility on Android devices, making the script even funnier and pulling the package together into a solid nugget of refined AWESOME.

Why iOS and Android?

As a modern person, living life in the fast lane, drinking coffee and travelling on trains, you probably have less time to dedicate to traditional console gaming. You find your smartphone or tablet has become your main gaming platform, and you have a mountain of cute, physics-based, action puzzlers to kill time with till your next important business meeting.

This is all great, but what if you want to punch things? What if you want to PUNCH A BEAR IN THE MOUTH while waiting for your restaurant reservation?

There are mobile ports of classics like Final Fight, Streets of Rage 2 and X Men, but they're all plagued with horrible virtual controls and you played them to death 15 years ago.

What the platform desperately needs is a great original beat-em-up, one that's improved by touch controls, not hindered by them. FIST OF AWESOME is all of this and a whole lot more. It's the scrolling beat-em-up that you've been waiting for, a modern homage to a golden age of gaming, an epic adventure through time and space, and you can play it on the toilet.

Who are you?

I'm Nicoll Hunt, a Scottish man with a beard. I've worked for big games companies like Codemasters, Visual Science and Realtime Worlds, on franchises like Colin McRae Rally, Carmageddon and APB. I've been a UI Programmer, a Graphics Programmer, a Lead Programmer and everything else in between.

Last year I developed Hard Lines, a modernised take of Snake & Tron mixed with Geometry Wars 2. It's been downloaded over a quarter of a million times, has a Metacritic rating of 86 and features a neurotic talking yellow line called Lionel.

I'm the programmer, artist and designer of FIST OF AWESOME.

The FIST OF AWESOME soundtrack is being developed by freelance composer Brendan Ratliff, aka Echolevel, aka Syphus. The legendary multi-instrumentalist, chiptune loving composer's previous soundtracks include the award winning Pineapple Smash Crew and iOS action title Gun Runner. He's quite terrifyingly talented.

Rewards

In the unlikely event that seeing this incredible project brought to fruition is not rewarding enough in itself, there are some exclusive AWESOME perks for Kickstarter funders. Check the right hand panel for a veritable bounty of tempting treats.

Master-of-tunes Echolevel is promising a very special edition of the DRM-free soundtrack for Kickstarter backers, to include any number of remixes, real-instrument covers, remix stem packs and crudely photocopied images of his bum.

Why Kickstarter?

FIST OF AWESOME has been developed entirely in my spare time. I took a pay cut and dropped my hours at my day job to spend more time on the project, but it's still not enough, I need more time. If this Kickstarter campaign succeeds I'll be able to dedicate myself full-time to completing the game.

The money will also fund new development and testing hardware, largely to cover the myriad of Android devices, and compensate Brendan for his epic work on the score.

Kickstarter Info: If I don't reach the target funding by the end of the campaign I won't get *any* of it. You get to keep any money you pledged and I'll have to find another way to finish the game.

FIST OF AWESOME is quite simply my dream project and by helping fund it you will *literally* be making my dreams come true. Not the ones about taking over the world with my army of mutant goats though, just the game dev ones.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

I've been making games professionally for over a decade, and I'm utterly committed to completing FIST OF AWESOME. It's my dream project and I've been very careful to minimise the potential situations that could cause the project to fail.

So far I've been working on FIST OF AWESOME in my spare time, and in the worst case that's what I'll continue to do. As a largely solo project FIST OF AWESOME is not dependant on a team of people being funded. As long as I can afford cheap cider and pot noodles I'll continue working to make it as unrelentingly AWESOME as possible.

Distributing free versions of the completed game on iOS to backers may be tricky due to App Store limitations, so I'm exploring a number of different options for delivery. The worst case will involve making the game free for a period of time to allow Kickstarters to pick it up free of charge.

My years of experience mean I'm very confident in my ability to deliver a high-quality game on time. I may not be as sexy as Tim Schafer but I am very good at what I do.

FAQ

  • I can happily confirm that FIST OF AWESOME is 100% compatible with beard-less players.

The experience is improved if you have a beard though, colours appear richer and the jokes seem funnier. Some beta testers have taken to wearing false beards or "cat beards" (google it!) to intensify their experience.
