The Aegis Effect (Canceled)
Sandbox survival like you've never seen it before! Do you have what it takes to reclaim this world and rebuild humanity?
In the year 2080, at the peak of human civilization, the stars finally seemed within our grasp! There were others, however, who were not so sure that was a good idea.
An interstellar ambassadorial envoy was sent to test us, to gauge our worthiness... and predictably... we failed. A failure so complete, that it endangered our very existence. In a matter of days, we had turned a peaceful observation into an outright state of war. A war that we could not hope to win!
In our self calamitous ignorance, we caused... The Aegis Effect.
In The Aegis Effect, our primary goal is to provide you with the ultimate survival game. For us, that means LOTS of options and FEW restrictions.
The Aegis Effect is a labor of love brought about by a group of gamers and game designers who love the sandbox survival horror genre, but have not found a sandbox survival horror game that we could truly fall in love with.
We hope that you like what you see and support our vision. The Aegis Effect is truly a game being designed and developed with the sole purpose of raising the standards for this beloved genre by providing you, the player, with a world full of options, governed by a system of rules designed to give you an immense amount of creative freedom and let you play the game however you wish. Most of all, we want to finally produce a game that we can truly fall in love with! We hope that you do too!
With The Aegis Effect, our goal is to completely redefine the survival horror genre by developing the game around a complex set of systems that are designed with one goal in mind, to let you play and survive this harsh new world in any way that you want to! At the core are a number of primary systems that set the stage for this open ended and creative gameplay.
True Open World Survival Sandbox Gameplay - In order to build and protect, you must find and collect. What would a survival game be without open world flavored exploration and scavenging? You will have an entire city to explore and scavenge and when we say an entire city, we mean… an ENTIRE CITY! Scavenge for loot, supplies, weaponry, and more anywhere you go in this vast urban graveyard. We are not building a city full of pretty facades. Simply put, if you can see it, odds are, you can explore it!
Dynamic Environmental Detection Navigation - Our robust dynamic geometry detection system allows you an unprecedented degree of freedom in how you explore the world in The Aegis Effect! Enjoy a world without limits as you jump, climb, shimmy, and slide your way through the ruins of the city in search for your salvation. Every ledge is a possible handhold, so use your imagination. Just because you don't see an immediate way to access something does not mean it is inaccessible! But be warned... you are not the only ones capable of using the environment to your advantage!
First/Third person action gameplay - Are you a third person action adventure fan or more of an FPS junkie? Fear not, The Aegis Effect supports both modes of gameplay. Physics based camera systems provide you with the smoothest, most enjoyable views as you explore the city, whether you prefer traditional action adventure style third person, fast paced over the shoulder, or up close and personal in your face first person gaming!
Structural Engineering - Our structural engineering system is an advanced building feature that will let you use virtually any object in the game world small enough to move, as building materials. You can scavenge and salvage almost everything and use it to your advantage!
Reinforce buildings by boarding up entry points, weld bars or sheets of metal over windows, use scavenged bricks or concrete blocks to wall up and fix busted walls or close off extra entry points, weld protective sheets of metal, bars, wire mesh, or even an abandoned snow plow to your vehicles, build perimeter walls and fencing out of scavenged materials etc, etc, etc. Our structural engineering system is based off of a complex elemental matrix that will allow you to build in a creative and common sense manner. Weld metal to metal, use mortar or other glue like substances to affix porous materials to each other, nail wood together, and much more. Find yourself in a pinch and need a quick fix, tie that sucker together with some extra rope or wire that you have laying around… you get the picture.
Mechanical Engineering - Our mechanical engineering system revolves around the concept of utilizing four primary component types to build functioning contraptions and machines. Those primary components are:
- Power Sources – This could be anything from fuels, to a working electrical grid, a generator, or even batteries.
- Power Transits – This is a component that can be used to transfer power from the source to another object or location, such as electrical wire.
- Flow Controllers – Switches, levers etc. These components will allow you to control the flow of power along the transits.
- Powered Objects – This is where it gets both interesting and fun. Powered objects are anything that does something when power is supplied to it. There are thousands of these types of items throughout the game world waiting to be found and used in your wildest creations! You might even be able to custom build some of your own...
3-D Printing Based Crafting - We've decided to base a more complex crafting system on technologies like 3-D printing and laser cutting. Rather than overly simplistic type crafting systems, we will be using electronic blueprints so that you can find great new designs for in game items. But you can trade or sell them and maybe even create custom blueprints! Higher tiers of printers will allow creation of higher quality items. Even today's technology allows us to 3-D print with countless materials. Imagine how amazing it will be by 2080!
Our in game 3-D printing system would make printing complex items possible. As complex as communication devices and as simple as door hinges will all be at the push of a button. But make no mistake, this doesn't make scavenging for components obsolete in the least. You may have to search for days to find a rare element needed for a project. Without the right components, a laser rifle might be as useful as a paperweight. The 3-D printing/crafting system would pair with a system to recycle found items into printing materials.
It is the apocalypse however, even with all this technology, you may still have to occasionally find two sticks to rub together to cook your dinner.
Working Power Grid - By 2080 we have used up most of our fossil fuels and have had to finally make the switch to more readily renewable sources of energy. With solar energy being the most reliable and abundant, most large cities have already been converted to collect, store and run off of it. Advanced technology has allowed us to automate over 80% of this process and as such, many areas of the city still have power available to them!
Vehicles, Vehicle Mechanics, & Vehicle Customization - There are literally hundreds of abandoned vehicles throughout the city, in various states of working order. You will be able to diagnose and repair many of these vehicles to help you explore the city. Furthermore, you will be able to use the structural engineering system to customize your vehicles however you see fit, whether that be reinforcing them with improvised protective armor plating or even weaponize them with the latest infected killing goodness.
Hunting & Gathering - Does it bother you when you are playing a survival game that the ONLY source of food and medicine is the prepackaged items that were available from before the catastrophe? It does us too. In The Aegis Effect, you will not only be able to scavenge pre-existing items to use for food and medicine, but you will be able to create your own through hunting and gathering techniques. Hunt animals, gather plants and herbs and use their resources to help you in your quest for survival!
Unpredictable AI - One of our primary goals is to make the world of The Aegis Effect both beautiful and dangerous! Our advanced AI uses behavior trees, weighted personality traits, and randomized stats to give our NPCs and enemies a truly unique identity and thinking capability! Our NPCs are equipped with a full set of sensory perceptions. They can see, smell, hear, and even analyze the environment around them to use the same advanced movement capabilities that are available to the player! Goal oriented behavior sets the precedence for governing AI actions, while unique and randomized personality traits and stats are used to affect the overall decision making process of each NPC. This means that we could place 5 (or even 10 or more) of the exact same NPC into the game world next to each other and they would/could react differently to the same stimulus depending on their individual personality traits and stat capabilities.
Player Customization - One thing that we are extremely passionate about is the ability for our players to be able to truly forge their own unique identity in The Aegis Effect. To that end, you will be able to completely customize every aspect of your character, from their height and weight, to their many various (and layerable) clothing options, down to their individual skill sets. You will be in control! There are no preset "classes" in The Aegis Effect, but each character will have a host of skill sets available to them that they can both learn and improve as you play. Want to be a scout, a frontline melee fighter, an auto mechanic, or structural engineer? Simply play the game and do what it is that you want to do. Your skills will improve through both use and character education. Instruction manuals and various other learning materials will be available in the game for your character to study to further improve his or her trade.
This will not only allow you to truly create your own unique identity, but it will also allow you to play with your friends and afford each of you the ability to specialize in areas that hold the highest interest for you as a player and work together as a group to survive! Which brings us to the next feature...
Single & MultiPlayer (Player Run Servers) - The Aegis Effect is designed on a self hostable server / client architecture that will allow you to play both single and multiplayer. You will be able to host and run your own private servers for you and your friends to play on, run a public server that other players can see and join via the built in server browser, or even kick it in solo mode where you take on the world all by your lonesome. We are all about choices and that extends right down to who you play with and how!
Once The Aegis Effect core game is launched, we will split our development efforts on the game into two main divisions. The first being dedicated to supporting and improving the core game, while the second group continues developing the new content and any features reached in the stretch goals.
In truth, any goals not achieved within the Kickstarter campaign will still be implemented eventually. We are too excited about them not to! Unlocking the stretch goals here will only ensure they are added that much faster!
Pixelloop Games is a small game studio based out of San Antonio, TX. The company was founded in 2011 by a group of friends with an extreme passion for gaming and game development. We have extensive backgrounds in multimedia creation including game development, movie production, and serious games and simulation development for government and military agencies.
Pixelloop Games was founded on passion. We are first and foremost, gamers. Game development has always been a major part of our lives, from our careers developing training simulations for the government and military on gaming technology, to our hobbies modding for every major game we could get our hands on toolsets for. In 2011, we decided to take the next step and focus our passion on developing our own games.
Up to this point, we have completely funded Pixelloop Games out of pocket and from the sales of our previous games. We have a very talented team that covers the full gamut of talent needed to produce quality game and media undertakings. We have spent over the last year working on The Aegis Effect with just our core team members, developing the underlying systems that will make this game truly stand out! Now is the time to ramp up the personnel and begin heading into full scale production.
Much of this consists of the artists that will bring the game world alive. The Aegis Effect is not like your typical sandbox. It is not going to be a vast open countryside speckled with small towns here and there that you can have minimal interaction with. It is a full on, densely packed urban city environment where nearly every building, nook, and cranny is fully open to the player. It will not be a world devoid of detail and life. The asset requirements alone are astounding and for this we need to bring on many more artists to really flesh the city out and bring it to life.
We will also need a few more programmers to help finalize the underlying systems that govern the rules for gameplay and give you, the player, that ultimate degree of creative freedom! All of this costs money and takes time. The more resources we have to throw at it, the faster we can push the development track and finally share our vision of what a sandbox survival game should be like with you!
Can we finish this game on our own? Yes, we are totally in love with this game, have the talent to see it done, and already have most of the underlying systems developed to a working state. Can we finish it on our own in a decent time span with our current manpower? Simply put... no way in hell... and that is why we need you. With your help, we can not only deliver you a spectacular gaming experience, but we will be able to acquire the resources needed to do so in a reasonable amount of time and to set the pace for future development and expansion on it!
Risks and challenges
Even the simplest game development projects are big undertakings with many obstacles and risks involved along the way. Even when following strict and proven templates there will still be an entire host of issues that crop up and must be dealt with. These issues can be multiplied many fold when you bring the word "innovation" into the mix... and that is exactly what we are going to do!
We are endeavoring to create a world that is based on a governing set of rules to define overall capabilities and options. Through manipulation of those rules, you are able to grow, survive, and expand in the world of The Aegis Effect, in the manner best suited to fit your individual play style. They are a set of rules that exist only to aid you in playing The Aegis Effect...not to hamper or limit you, but to truly set you free upon the world.
Our goal is to create the first true sandbox survival experience that really lets you SURVIVE, by allowing you to do whatever it takes to make it in this harsh new world. This type of innovation will always have its share of issues and setbacks, however after many months of designing, prototyping, and testing the core engineering behind these systems, we are very confident that not only is our goal doable, but it is definitely achievable!
Does it require thinking outside the box? Absolutely! We have already written, and rewritten the cores for most of these systems many times over. Each revision bringing us closer and closer to a fully functioning, reliable, and efficiently running system to base each section of gameplay capability on. At this time, most of our underlying systems have been prototyped and are running reliably and efficiently, and with every day we grow more and more excited about the new innovative experience we will be bringing you in The Aegis Effect!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
