My six-year-old daughter North loves Pokemon cards. Within a few weeks of starting her collection, I couldn’t believe how much knowledge she had picked up. But if she was going to be memorizing the names and qualities of a bunch of characters, I wanted them to be a little more meaningful than Squirtle and Venipede— thus, League of Valor was born. We whipped up a prototype and now we’re name-dropping Sojourner Truth and Hillary Clinton as easy as Dartex and Jigglypuff!
League of Valor is a set of forty cards depicting accomplished women in ten different fields. They come in sets of four: four scientists, four activists, four athletes, four musicians, and so on. You can play Go Fish, a matching game, Pokemon-style War--or make up your own game! The “hit points” on each card are randomly assigned and the women selected for League of Valor represent just a tiny sliver of the vast array of valorous women. I hope to feature many more women in future decks!
League of Valor offers both girls and boys an important set of role models as they begin to form their own sense of the world. It’s more important than ever that we lift women up and tell the stories of the trailblazers and heroines who came before us.
I’m very grateful to my family and friends for feedback and help, to my daughter North for her suggestions and ideas, and to the amazing moms on the Facebook group Mamis Unite for their advice and enthusiasm for the project. I also want to shout out two other terrific projects similar to League of Valor: Persistent Sisters and The Woman Cards. League of Valor focuses on tying the identity and accomplishments of great women to engaging, kid-tested gameplay, but each project has its own emphasis and merit. Together, they are part of a powerful wave that lifts up women’s voices and stories to make a better world for us all.
I hope you’ll join me in bringing League of Valor to life!

WHAT I'M UP TO
A prototype of the League of Valor deck has been completed! It has been kid-tested and approved!
What remains to be done:
· Update the deck with ten new cards
· Add achievements on the face of each card
· Design a tuck box
· Make custom cards for backers
· Print and ship!
- The cards are of standard playing-card size and stock
- They come in a custom-designed tuck box
- They will be shipped late July/Early August 2018
- Due to shipping costs, as of now, League of Valor is only available in the US, Canada, and EU
Risks and challenges
I’m super excited to bring League of Valor to the world! I’ve already co-produced one successful Kickstarter project, Legends of the Talmud (now available on Amazon). I’ve partnered with a printer who has produced a successful prototype of the League of Valor cards and the schedule for delivery includes extra time to account for unexpected delays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
