This is my story. Some of you know it, some of you have walked in half way through and some of you may be stumbling upon this now thinking 'what the devil is going on?!' Anyway, thanks for coming. Now take a seat and we'll begin.
4 years ago I started uploading videos to YouTube. I just wanted to sing and play the guitar and have somebody listen to it so I decided to do a cover every week.
I started to get some nice comments and some regular subscribers and some friends. And I thought this music thing is a walk in the park!
I kept uploading videos and improving immensely as a musician, and I recorded an EP in a friend's home studio. I started to talk to my subscribers, I opened with a friendly 'hiiii' and started to show them my character. Yup. This music thing is a walk in the park!
Then I met a couple of set backs, nasty ego knocks and mean people. And I thought, this music thing isn't a walk in the park after all. Maybe I don't want to do this anymore.
What happened next is something I never would have predicted. I met four very strange guys who offered me the role of lead singer in their band. They turned out to be some of the best friends I ever could meet, and they gave me all my confidence back. They convinced me to write more songs and take control of my career. They showed me PledgeMusic, how it worked and how I could make it work for me.
At the same time I found a whole new platform to share my music. YouTube and Facebook and Twitter were great, but restrictive. I couldn't reach people, connect with them as widely as I wanted to. So I took my guitar and my amp and I set up on a busy walkway by the river Thames. I never looked back, this was my second home.
With the help of my band mates I wrote a whole album and recorded it in my bedroom. The Ideawake boys helped me tweak it, added instruments and made me artwork. I reached out to my fans for help with funding and I couldn't believe the response.
It has been 18 months since my first album Blue Eyed Soul was funded by YOU.
I've been writing solidly since then and I can feel myself improving as a songwriter every day.
Now, with a little more knowledge of song production, the industry and songwriting, I would like to increase the quality of the recordings for this album. So far I am well on my way to a more professional sound than my last record. However, this comes with a lot of extra costs and while I've been mostly funding my second album from my own pocket, there is so much more I'd like to do, making this album great!
I'm not using Crowdfunding in a desperate plea to raise enough money this time. I have recorded an album on a tight budget before and I can do it again. But I'd like to afford to bring in industry professionals, pay for session musicians and offer a higher quality end product.
I'd also like to offer exclusive incentives to those of you who have been asking about hard copies of old EPs, YouTube shoutouts and video features. I am inundated with YouTube requests and as much as I'd like to do them all, it wouldn't be fair to do only a few or possible to do them all.
This is my limited edition pop-up shop for you to get yourself some rewards, and feel really good about it to because you're funding this album right here on Kickstarter.
Thanks for reading :)
Risks and challenges
Where am I at so far?
As many of my active social media followers know, I have already started work on my second album. I am using a Portsmouth studio (and producer) and have been in to record a fair few times already.
At the moment I have recorded all the parts for 6 of the songs and I'm currently reviewing the mixes. I plan on recording a total of 14 songs and picking the best 10 for the album. (Those who fund the album will get digital copies of all the songs that get recorded but don't make the final cut.)
I am aiming to release the album on February 21st exclusively to Pledgers. While that seems like miles away, it isn't! Working with professionals is great, and I'm so excited to take a step forward with my music; but communicating between all the different parties who are piecing together this record proves a lengthy process. Most of the time I am playing the waiting game! I wanted to release sooner than this date but want to be fair and realistic to all of you and February 2015 is when I feel most confident about this album being finished.
So far I see no other set backs other than timing. While I'm working with many different experts, I still have ALL the control over this record and take it from me, I've got this in the bag!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
