The RoadBug bicycle engine kit is not a new concept, just a revitalized one. In recent years the popularity of these kits has grown considerably and I am very familiar with just about every kit out there. My name is James Brisciana and I have been in the motorized bicycle business for almost 10 years. After many years of protoyping and road testing, I have developed a simple, high quality kit that converts just about any bicycle into a moped in 20-30 minutes.
The RoadBug bicycle engine kit is a friction drive based system that is propelled by a drive roller that rests on your rear tire. The resulting ride is smooth and powerful and will handle even heavy riders and reach speeds of 30 mph with one of many engines that are compatible with this kit. The kit uses engines that have an automatic centrifugal clutch, which means the engine does not stall when you come to a stop, it remains idling. When locked in the drive position with the engine running, your bike is essentially an automatic motorbike, just give it gas and go! Our kits allow you to still use your bicycle with full functionality, with or without the engine on. You can pedal and use the engine at the same time if needed, or you can just use the engine. This kit almost always exceeds people's expectations and is rugged enough to be used for everyday reliable economic transportation.
The kits are made in the USA and are of the highest quality. The engines used on the kit are usually made in Japan or China. A Japanese engine, such as Honda can usually be purchased in the USA from a USA distributor, but the proven quality Chinese engines we will also be using on our complete kits will be imported directly.
We are here on Kickstarter to hopefully raise the funds to be able to complete this project. We have all the USA suppliers in place for the manufacturing of the parts required for the kit. Most of the parts are custom, but some parts are stock items such as bearings and hardware. We have priced the kit competetively but in order to accomplish this the parts must be manufactured in bulk of about 500-1000 units at a time. As for the engines, we are hoping to initially import 500 units. To accomplish our goal of succesfully completing this project would require about $20,000.
If you decided to pledge to us you will receive a substantial discount off the expected retail price of the kits. If we are funded succesfully it will take 2-3 months to have the parts manufactured and import the engines. You should receive your product sometime in late May or early June.

Risks and challenges
As is the case with many types of manufacturing obstacles can arise. We have worked carefully with our parts manufacturer through the prototype process to avoid any design setbacks. All the parts have been road tested for 1000's of miles and everything is performing perfectly. If the project is funded succesfully the only foreseeable setback that could arise would be a slight manufacturing delay. This depends on how busy the machine shop is when the order is actually placed for manufacturing. Normal turnaround on this type of manufacturing is 6-8 weeks, but if the shop is busy it may be more like 10-12 weeks. Should this or any other type of delay occur we would notify you and provide you with an updated shipping date. As for importing engines this has been researched carefully and we have prior importing experience. We have our China supplier in place and all the EPA certificates required for this type of import have been verified.
