My name is Joel Eddy, and for the last three years I have been creating video reviews of tabletop board games. In addition to the 300+ videos, vlogs, and reviews I have created on my YouTube Channel , I have also created nearly 50 videos covering Gen Con 2012 and Gen Con 2013. The YouTube Channel now has over 3,500 subscribers, receives over 1500 views a day, averaging 2500 views per video, and is on pace to eclipse 1 million total views and 5000 subscribers by the end of 2013.
We are growing faster and faster every day!
I will continue to work hard to create exhaustive video reviews and board game related video blogs, but need your help to take my Gen Con convention coverage to the next level. Including the latest videos, we've reach over 100,000 total views of our Gen Con videos! The collection of videos also received a ton of fantastic feedback and was all over the Hotness on BoardGameGeek.com.
Gen Con 2014 Coverage
Drive Thru's Gen Con coverage was one of the few video shows to provide near "live" footage from the convention floor with videos being uploaded within hours of recording. We had first (or very early) coverage of some the hottest games to come out at the show, including the new Firefly: The Game, Battlelore 2nd Edition, Solforge Beta, Eldritch Horror, and the new Star Wars X-Wing ships!
For Gen Con 2014, I hope to provide even more (and better) coverage. This is where you come in! I need your help to upgrade my equipment and materials, as well as the means to travel to Indianapolis and produce the videos.
Take a look at the first scoop I obtained on the new Battlelore 2nd Edition from Fantasy Flight Games. You can also see more examples of my work below:

The last several years have been a blast. I have stumbled upon the amazing hobby of video creation and production which now coexists alongside my passion for tabletop gaming. Over the past couple of years, the board game industry's media coverage has improved by leaps and bounds. I would love to continue to push the envelope for myself and improve the ability of Drive Thru Review to highlight the great things to come in 2014.
However, I am just a one man show. I need help to take things further. As a backer of several projects myself, I've seen how Kickstarter can be put to wonderful use. The feedback and support I have received over the last couple of years has been amazing, but now I need the assistance of backers, publishers, and anyone who has a desire to see further industry coverage and our continued improvement and investment in highlighting new releases and industry events.
Where will the funding go?
All the money raised will go towards the expenses incurred in acquiring the footage to produce near "live" convention coverage for the upcoming Gen Con convention in 2014.
- Travel and lodging expenses
- High-speed Internet access
- Video equipment
- Video software
Should we miraculously achieve any of the stretch goals, I have summarized those expenses below as well.
I am trying to keep the reward structure simple for this project. Please feel free to pledge whatever you are comfortable with. I am open to feedback regarding pledge levels and stretch goals!
Any pledge level is extremely appreciated!

NEW!! $100.00 Drive Thru Web Sponsor! By popular demand I've added a $100 sponsor level. There will be five slots available and each slot will be allowed to provide one 300x300 image to go in rotation on the drivethruvideos.com website. Below, I've attached a small mock-up for the position featured prominently on the site masthead. It will show up on every page of the website. The only requirement is that the imagery be gaming related and G or PG. I've created a plugin that will give views and clicks reporting and allow me to easily update the image and click-through link. So, you can change it as time goes by throughout the entire year!
NEW!! $150.00 Vlog Guest!Yourself and up to two other people of your choosing can join Joel on a Drive Thru Google Hangout. We will broadcast live to the Youtube Channel, after which the show will be archived and posted to the Drive Thru Blog on BoardGameGeek.com. You can choose any board game related topic you like! Must provide at least two weeks notice and be flexible in your scheduling. Also, please consider timezone differences. Let's try and keep it a PG or PG-13 rating.
$200.00 Drive Thru Review will complete a preview video for a game of your choice. This can include a published game, prototype, or Kickstarter project. There are 8 slots available at this pledge level.
$300.00 Playtesting and game consultation on your prototype. I will take a look at your game, playtest it, and provide feedback and suggestions via email and/or phone. Will also include a preview video if requested. There are 2 slots available at this pledge level.
$400.00 Drive Thru Silver Sponsor. For those feeling especially generous, I've added a $400 backer level. You will be mentioned as a Silver Level Sponsor on all 2014 videos on the Drive Thru Review YouTube channel. This can include a logo for you or your company that will appear towards the end of each video. Any text or imagery must be something that would be consistent with a G or PG rating. The text or imagery will appear in the exit credits of my videos and last about 20-30 seconds.
$600.00 Drive Thru Gold Sponsor. For those feeling fantastically generous, I've added a $600 backer level to be mentioned as a Gold Level Sponsor on all 2014 videos on the Drive Thru Review YouTube channel. This can include a logo for you or your company that will appear at the beginning of each video on the Drive Thru Review YouTube channel. Any text or imagery must be something that would be consistent with a G or PG rating. The text or imagery will appear in an opening splash introducing each of my videos and last about 5-10 seconds.
UNLOCKED!! $3500.00 - Equipment and Software Upgrade: Drive Thru Review will upgrade their video production equipment to include better studio and lighting equipment, as well as upgraded computer hardware and software. I feel like my videos are currently "good enough to get the job done" quality. But, I would like to ramp up the overall production value of all of the videos on my channel. This will require light boxes, upgraded computer hardware, as well as better software, and hired expertise for post-production work.
Achieving this stretch goal will give me the ability to do all of the improvements to my video production. If we reach the target funding and get close to this goal, but don't achieve it completely, I am willing to let the viewership have a voice and will consider backer feedback about the most desirable options.
$7500.00 - Essen 2014!: In addition to Gen Con coverage, Drive Thru Review will provide Essen 2014 coverage! For 2013, I am already planning to cover the Sasquatch Gaming Festival in Seattle which takes place two weeks after Essen. I will feature many of the brand new Essen 2013 releases.
However, I would love to upgrade that coverage next year and bring near "live" videos right from the floor of Essen Spiel 2014. If we reach the first stretch goal, get close to this goal, but don't achieve it completely, I am willing to let the viewership have a voice and will consider backer feedback about the most desirable options.
Risks and challenges
If the Kickstarter project does not succeed, Drive Thru Review will be able to continue but in a limited capacity and not be able to attend or provide coverage for Gen Con 2014.
I do not expect there to be any challenges, but they might include completing the preview videos in a timely manner as well as any unforeseen events that would prevent attendance of coverage of Gen Con 2014.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
