Maze-O is a maze building toy for kids. Connect pieces to easily form amazing mazes! Read more
This project's funding goal was not reached on December 16, 2012.
About this project
Maze-O squares are simple for small hands to hook together and easy for young children to use. The idea of creating pathways is intuitive and natural. Maze-O squares are just the right size to create impressive mazes, but are easy to put away. It is addicting to play with and great for your child’s development. Kids love the colors and patterns they can make with Maze-O squares.
EASY TO PUT TOGETHER
Maze-O pieces are designed to drop into place. There are no snapping parts, so they are simple to put together and simple to switch out pieces. Perfect for little hands.
We believe in kid-directed play. Kids take the lead in creating beautiful creations, patterned passageways or just random designs. In whatever stage your children are in, Maze-O will boost their brains and empower their creativity.
Maze-O will be manufactured in brilliant red, yellow, green, and blue. The perfect colors to spark the imagination!
Maze-O squares are the perfect size, about 2 and 1/2 inches square, for all your favorite maze solving toys, such as toy cars, small robotic bugs, action figures, balls and more.
GROWS WITH KIDS
Simple enough for young children. As they grow, they can create patterns, complicated passageways and build the maze into shapes. Recommended for ages 4-8.
Maze-O helps build spatial reasoning, fine motor skills, problem solving skills, and spatial reasoning. Spatial reasoning has been shown to give kids an edge in engineering and computer science fields, architecture and art. Maze-O is a perfect platform for parent/child interations and social interaction. It is great for all children, including special needs children. Set your kids on the path towards success with Maze-O!
Maze-O's novel design and construction make it a one-of-a-kind toy. Maze-O is patent pending.
THE STORY BEHIND IT ALL
Our son began creating mazes out of blocks for his cars to drive through. He liked to create little passageways and dead-ends. However, it took him a long time to build a simple maze and it was so easy to bump it and destroy all his work. We realized kids needed a way to build mazes! And thus began the journey to create Maze-O.
BRINGING MAZE-O TO LIFE
We’ve come a long way in the development of Maze-O. To bring Maze-O to life we purchased a 3D printer which melts down layers of plastic filament to build up the Maze-O squares layer by layer. This new breakthrough in manufacturing technology allowed us to iterate on prototype designs quickly and easily. After multiple designs, we settled on the perfect design and went to work printing squares.
We printed a few sets of Maze-O and started play-testing them with kids! Everyone was asking how they can get their own set. Our 3D printer is great for prototypes, but the amount of time to print them just isn’t practical. It literally takes us days to print a single set.
After getting quotes from manufacturers, we found that we needed to tweak our design even more to make it economical to mass produce. We have used advice from top plastics manufacturers and designers to create a piece that is easy to use, great to look at, and at a great price!
We need your help to move Maze-O to the next level! Producing Maze-O is going to require steel molds for the injection molding manufacturing process. These are pricy, but with your help, we can get Maze-O into the hands of children everywhere!
Once we hit our funding goal, we will give the green light for a local manufacturer to create the molds and start rolling out Maze-O squares, proudly made in the USA. We will go right into production and start producing up to 720 Maze-O squares per hour! And as quickly as we can sort and box them, we will start fulfilling your rewards!
We are very excited about our rewards. Maze-O Man is our way to say "thank you" and give you just a taste of Maze-O. Each one is hand crafted and decorations will vary. You can specify if you want a Maze-O Man or Woman when we send the survey at the end of the project. Of course, our main rewards are Maze-O sets, one at 36 pieces for younger kids, one with 54 for older kids and one with 72 pieces for maze masters. For the serious Maze-O aficionado, we’ve got rewards including designing your own maze to be used in a stop motion video and a trip to where it all began. Please take a look at our great rewards!
Please remember that Kickstarter has all-or-nothing funding. If we meet our goal, you get Maze-O, and if we don't, no one is charged and we're back to the drawing board. If you are excited about Maze-O, please spread the word and share the joy of getting lost with Maze-O!
Nov. 27 - We have added a new reward level. For $75, you get a 72 piece set and a Maze-O T-shirt! We'll be sending the T-shirt out with all higher level rewards as well. We hope you'll enjoy wearing Maze-O!
Risks and challenges
There are always risks when going into a manufacturing process. The mold could turn out Maze-O squares that fit too tight or too loose together. We have tried to minimize this risk with prototypes and expert advice. But all our planning and math could still land us with an imperfect mold, in which case we would need to have the tooling adjusted. We will do one final prototype run by CNC machining while Kickstarter is up. This will be the final catch to make us as confident as possible that the fit will be ideal.
We have taken into account lead times with the manufacturer and the time it will take to put it all together, but delays still may occur. Between production, shipping the pieces to us, sorting, packing and shipping to you, there are lots of places for unexpected delay to slow our process. We will be as transparent as possible throughout the process and have tried to factor possible delays into our estimated delivery dates.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Our biggest cost is creating molds to be used in manufacturing. We will be locally producing Maze-O in the USA. The mold for straights and turns will have 2 cavities of each piece together in one mold and will cost $23,500. The three lower volume pieces, dead-end, ramp and T-junction, will be in a mold together and will cost $19,800 to create. Each Maze-O square costs on average $.20 for the plastic and cycle time on the machine. We've also got costs for the box ($0.50) and shipping ($5.30). Maze-O is our passion and we wanted to keep costs low for you and hopefully have a reasonable goal on Kickstarter, so we are personally kicking in a good portion towards the mold to be able to get Maze-O made.
