--------------

Beneath Floes is a short, illustrated work of interactive fiction made with the Twine engine, playable in most web browsers. It is story-driven, centered around Inuit history and traditions. The game is a collaboration between Bravemule (Matul Remrit, The Domovoi) and the Nunavut-based game studio Pinnguaq (Singuistics, Qalupalik).

Every dollar of the campaign, after fees, will be used to fund the Inuktitut localization. The English version is already complete, and has been released early to create interest in the localization. Give it a try, if you'd like, then help us make the game available in Inuktitut.

Qikiqtaaluk, 1962. The sun falls below the horizon and won't return for months. You wander the broken shoreline, wary of your mother's stories about the qalupalik. Fish woman, stealer of wayward children: she dwells beneath the ice.

Inuktitut is the dominate spoken language of Nunavut. It is an official language of the territory, surviving decades of colonial erasure through foreign curriculum and marginalization.

Beneath Floes is set on Baffin Island and centered around Inuit history, so we consider it important that the story be available to play in the indigenous language of the eastern Arctic. Nunavut is full of people young and old who play games on a regular basis. Localization into Inuktitut will allow them to play Beneath Floes in the language they speak at home.

Like the English version, the Inuktitut localization of Beneath Floes will be free, so every backer receives the game. However, there are some great exclusive rewards at certain pledge levels! Any pledge level $5 or above also includes the rewards in the pledge levels below it.

$1: Backer Credits
In a campaign this small, every dollar seriously counts. You'll be included the backer credits, which will appear inside the game's code and on the Bravemule website.

$5: Desktop Wallpaper
At this level, you'll receive a desktop wallpaper of the game's title screen (featured above) in a variety of sizes.

$10: High-Res Artwork Pack
The illustrations in Beneath Floes are relatively small to keep the file size down. You'll receive a .zip of the game's 60+ illustrations in glorious high resolution: 300 DPI and massive.

$15: Qalupalik Illustration
George Kavallines, the artist of Matul Remrit, is contributing an illustration of a qalupalik inspired by the game to the campaign. At this level, you'll receive the illustration in high-resolution. Design to be revealed.

$20: Beneath Floes Postcard
At this level, you'll receive a postcard printed with artwork from the game in the mail. This card will thank the heck out of you and also have weird microfiction from Kevin Snow on it.

$75: Qalupalik Poster
At this higher-level tier, you'll receive a gorgeous poster from Pinnguaq's upcoming game Qalupalik. Only available to US, Canada, & EU.

Pinnguaq means “play” in Inuktitut and is the only games company and technology startup that calls the Canadian Arctic home.  Based out of Pangnirtung, Nunavut – Pinnguaq aims to bring quality “play” experiences that foster learning, growth and fun.

At the root of Pinnguaq is a respect and care for the rich languages and cultures that make up this planet. Pinnguaq was created out of a desire to see strong programming available in Inuktitut, the Inuit language, and it roots itself in that mission as it moves forward.

Bravemule is the banner for the multimedia collaborations organized by writer & designer Kevin Snow. The team currently consists of artist Patrick Bonaduce, sound designer Priscilla White, and logo designer Mike LeMieux. Bravemule's previous projects include the Dwarf Fortress-based webcomic "Matul Remrit" and the Twine game "The Domovoi."

Risks and challenges

Risks for the localization of Beneath Floes are minimal because the game is already complete. Localization is a difficult, involved process, particularly when it comes to the many dialects of Inuktitut. However, Pinnguaq has successfully developed and localized several games before, including Singuistics, Ittle Dew, Robot Turtles, and Osmos. The short length of the script (3000~ words) will keep the localization manageable.
