Read More About Our Stretch Goals

==================

“As a rule,” said Sherlock Holmes, “the more bizarre a thing is the less mysterious it proves to be. “What are you going to do, then?” I asked. “To smoke,” he answered. “It is quite a three pipe problem, and I beg that you won’t speak to me for fifty minutes.” (A. Conan Doyle, The Red Headed League)

There are real problems to be solved in this world. Three pipe problems. Design can solve these problems. We're designers, which means we get the opportunity…the privilege to solve them. What are we doing with that opportunity?

I'm writing a book exploring that very question. We'll look back at some design history, discuss how design solves problems, why design matters, and how to change the world around us through design.

The Content

1. Design Solves Problems
2. Industrial Design & Digital Design (Then & Now)
3. Design for People
4. How to Think Creatively
5. Design Can Change the World
6. Problem Solving: Applied
— Build Positive Experiences
— Do Your Research
— Know Your Users
— Build A Reservoir of Knowledge
— Design Should Be Obvious
— Solve the Right Problems
— Simplify

The History

Last year I had the opportunity to give Three Pipe Problems as a talk at a few events. You can watch the talk given at Creative Mornings Orlando below:

The Craftsmanship

I love books, and this book is going to be beautifully hand-crafted inside and out. I plan to produce the book using the highest quality materials and truly make it something you'll be proud to showcase on your bookshelf.

Additionally, I'm commissioning the inimitable Sean McCabe to hand-draw over 20 custom illustrations for the book as well as the cover. Some of these will be full-page spreads, others will be smaller callout quotes. But all of them will be works of art. Additionally we'll be producing 3 unique, limited edition screen prints, and a set of letterpressed cards available at multiple reward levels.

Sean is the epitome of a craftsman. His custom lettering and illustration is nothing short of amazing, and I can't wait for him to unleash his talent on this project. If there is one reason you should support this book, it's to see Sean's work. You can see samples of his work below, and also at his website. I'm so excited to have him on board.

The Rewards

The plan is to ship the book in early September, 2013. We hope to ship letterpress cards sometime in early July, and the posters in early August. As we move forward, we'll post updates, screenshots, designs, etc which all backers will have access to.

I have yet to choose a printer for the book, but it will be one who can deliver on quality. I also plan on using the awesome folks at Mama's Sauce here in Orlando to produce the letterpressed cards and screenprinted posters. I've had the privilege to work with them several times and they never cease to exceed expectations.

Sean will be producing custom, hand-drawn illustrations of these prints, but these are the quotes that he'll be designing. This gives you an idea of what to expect.

— "Design Solves Problems
— "It is quite a Three Pipe Problem, and I beg you not to speak to me for fifty minutes."
— "Design for the Other Side of the Screen"
— "Design Can Change the World"

The Reasons

Why produce this book through Kickstarter?

1. I'm a digital designer by trade which means I push pixels around most days. I want to create something tangible—something that you can hold in your hands, with pages you can flip through.

2. I want to share the book with as many people as possible. Kickstarter is such a great platform for reaching people.

3. I want to create something beautiful. That's why I've commissioned Sean McCabe to help out. I'm fully confident we'll produce a book that you'll be proud to put on your shelf.

4. I love the design community. I want to include you in the production of this book because I think it's so relevant to what we do each and every day. The idea of producing this with your help really excites me.

About Jason

Jason is a designer, husband, and father. He leads the design team at Envy Labs and Code School. He's the author of Branding Matters, a book about branding for small business, and has designed and consulted for clients like NBC-Universal, Arnold Palmer Hospital, Yum! Brands, Cisco, and Google. He's an ex-swimmer, amateur cyclist, craft beer snob, and a borderline crazy UNC Tarheel fan. Jason lives in Orlando, FL with his wife and three children.

So what do you say? Will you support me in this journey? I sincerely hope you will, and thank you in advance. The game is afoot!

Risks and challenges

All of the funds will go towards production costs and commissioning Sean's illustrations. I'm not asking for investment in the writing of this book—I'm putting that skin in the game and covering that myself. The initial investment of $8,500 will cover the initial production and printing, and any additional investment will go towards more copies of the book.
