Thanks for visiting our page! We're so excited about this project and we hope you are too. These talented young musicians are ready to take their music to the masses, and you can help.
Our approach to music here at The Smith School* is not like other schools. In addition to learning theory and technique, we focus on student-led composition and experiential learning. Students are encouraged to follow their musical interests, and they are given the tools to craft the sounds they want to create; from rock to jazz to electronic music we strive to foster creativity, originality and above all, free expression.
The students here have been hard at work writing some amazing original music as part of a year-long composition project. They're ready for the big leagues, but it's expensive to record professionally. Our proposal is to raise $1000 to take the intermediate/advanced music students to a recording studio for two days to record and mix an EP of their original music. This budget includes the cost of two full studio days (10 hours each... recording is time-consuming!) with an experienced recording engineer who is eager to show the students all of the aspects of music production. It will also include the cost of mastering the songs, and printing a short run of physical copies. The music students will coordinate with the art students to design the album cover and artwork.
Writing songs is only the beginning; there are many steps to getting your music out into the world, and by participating in this project, the students will learn a great deal about the process.
* The Smith school is a small private school on Manhattan's Upper West Side that serves the needs of students who historically have not succeeded in a more traditional school environment. We offer small classes and individualized attention and have an extremely diverse population. Our teachers, staff and parents work together to create a safe, family-like environment for our students and always strive to live up to The Smith School’s maxim, “Small School. Big Heart.”
