Do you love rap music? Do you also love kid's books? Then you're going to really love these books! Three board books that take three famous rap songs and spin the well-known choruses in a fun kid-friendly way. Whaaaat? I know. Read more below.
HOW IT STARTED:
Hey Kickstarter! Thanks for checking out my little project.
I have to say it all started with my best buddy and right-hand man, my son, Desmond.
People tell you that kids change you, but I had no idea. I looked at his cute little face and realized that telling him how he should live - follow your dreams, take risks, don't be afraid to fail, have fun, don't take life too seriously, etcetera ... wasn't going to cut it. I had to step up and live by example. Hence, my first collection of kid's books.
Des not only inspires me to live more fully, he inspired these fun rap-influenced board books. Des was about six months old at the time and I had "Hypnotize" on brain repeat. I was holding my babe, looked at him and starting singing "Piggie, Piggie, Piggie ..." and then the lightbulb came on! The perfect way to share a bit of my favorite songs with the little guy, in a fun, colorful, and interactive way ... BOARD BOOKS!
I've always loved books and reading, and that love has only expanded since I've become a mom. One of my favorite things is sharing a book with Des. I love how books kind of slow time and you get to discover new things with your kid. So it's an awesome feeling to think I could play a small part in creating more of these kinds of opportunities for other people and their babes.
As much as we love the farm books and fluffy bear books that are typical of the baby board book industry, I am always searching for something a little different with great design and art and quirk. And to have something that appeals to me too, that's a winner in my book! And these three books do all that.
Help kick off the very first three books under the Freshtake Books imprint. I've taken the following three rap songs and re-imagined them to appeal to kids and adults. Fun, imaginative and perfect for parents and kids to share together. We've used smart and clever illustrations, along with design-savy typefonts to bring the characters and words to life.
Each book will be printed as a tough board book designed to withstand rough and tumble baby and toddler handling. With 14 full color illustrations, each book is specifically created to generate playful interaction on every page - from fun animals, to cars, and food, little ones will find something to talk about on each page.
Snoop Dogg's "Gin and Juice" is now Snoop Frog's "Sippin' on Apple Juice"
A hip hoppin' frog is bound to get tired ... and thirsty ... and hungry.
Biggie Smalls' "Hypnotize" is now Piggie Smalls' "Piggie Piggie Piggie"
This little piggie can cause quite the mess, and his mom is sick of it.
Jay Z's "99 Problems" is now Jay Bee's "Nighty Nite Problems"
A bumble bee who just can't seem to get a goodnight's rest, Jay Bee is tuckered out.
BEHIND THE PROJECT:
I'm Lily Owens, I've re-imagined three well-known rap song choruses into baby board books. I've worked in publishing for the past five years, but I've been writing kid's stories since ... well... I was a kid. I live near Tulsa Oklahoma, but often dream of eating croissants everyday in Paris.
I sought out the creative mind of Dale Edwin Murray, artist and fellow rap-enthusiast, to bring these books to life. Dale is a self-taught illustrator and graphic artist originally from the Midlands and now living and working in London. He works predominantly with editorial, advertising and design clients which include Google, Orange, The Times, Barclays, V & A, WIRED magazine, ITV and ADWEEK magazine. His work has also been featured on homewares, greetings cards and art prints.
$9,000 covers the costs for printing 500 of each of the three board books, rewards and shipping, as well as the fees associated with running a Kickstarter project.
THE KICKSTARTER REWARDS:
Below are some pictures of the rewards you can receive by backing this project. Please read more about the rewards on the right.
If this project is funded I will begin printing at the end of November. Printing will take several weeks, and then I'll start the shipping process. My ideal goal is to have reward books to everyone by early January 2015 (hopefully put a little extra "happy" in the New Year ; ) I will keep everyone updated on any changes in the timeline.
Thank you for taking the time to read about this project. Please let me know if you have any questions. And I'd love to have you follow along on Instagram @freshtakebooks
Risks and challenges
I've worked for more than five years in publishing where I manage large print runs for books of all different quantities, from conception to completion, so that part should be good.
As far as risks and challenges, dependent on the press' schedule there could be a delay in the printing deadline, therefore a delay in getting book rewards out to everyone. I really hope to get rewards out in January 2015.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
