About this project
UPDATE 12/20: We found a manufacturer in the USA! Instead of overseas, the kitty boat will be made through Mudshark Studios in Portland, Oregon by these awesome people:
Yes, this will increase our production cost significantly, but each piece will be made with care by established and knowledgeable ceramicists. Only top-quality pieces are allowed out their door. Plus we will be keeping our cash local and supporting yet more of that entrepreneurial spirit here in the States!
UPDATE 12/14: Yes, you can give a pledge as a gift, and we will send a personalized email! See our update tab (above the vid) to find out how.
UPDATE 12/13: New rewards unlocked: bling for you and your kitty! See pics below. Also, gravy boat will be stoneware *NOT porcelain* to preserve the matte color.
UPDATE 12/10: Yay for matching donations! Winning bids from this week's Facebook auctions (ending Friday) will be matched here on Kickstarter. Check out the glass for auction here.
UPDATE 12/7: The big picture vid added to latest update. Click "Updates" above to see.
UPDATE: We've been approached by Front magazine (London) to feature the Puking Kitty Saucy Boat on their "Splash your Cash" page! Issue comes out Thurs. 11/29!

Beyond the puking kitty boat is a much bigger aim here. I am a glass artist in a small but amazing movement that may well be the latest American folk art. I'm talking about glass pipes. The story of our movement just got onto Netflix streaming and is one of the top documentaries listed: Degenerate Art: The Art and Culture of Glass Pipes. My plan is to break out and start a design studio rooted aesthetically in this new American movement. Objects that aren't pipes, but inspired by those designs. This Puking Kitty Gravy Boat is just the beginning of something much much bigger. Are you with me?
The Puking Kitty Saucy Boat has a remarkable true-to-life action and has proven to be excellent for all manner of culinary semi-liquids. Try it out with:
Mr. B is our kitty and our hobby. Since we rescued him 5 years ago he has been the inspiration for many a Mr. B-related project, mostly for our own personal amusement. Projects like the Mr. B line of "holiday" postcards, appropriate for all manner of celebrations (especially useful for holiday card procrastinators), and the Catronica electronic music album. So when Lewis showed Ginger the Barfing Squirrel Gravy Boat posted on Laughing Squid (originally via Reddit) she just HAD to make one, Mr. B style.
Giggles ensued upon first and all subsequent uses. We snapped a few photos, took a video, and thanked Laughing Squid for the excellent inspiration. Now, we knew the Internet was made of cats, but we had no idea there would be such a positive response! It has been shared, tweeted, and liked all over the interwebs and all sorts of folks are asking us for one (or three).
WHERE WE ARE NOW
We would love to spread the glory that is Mr. B and the giggle-generator that is the Puking Kitty Saucy Boat, but glass (the original medium) is not a cost-effective option for mass production. Stoneware is sturdy, affordable, and is an already established medium on the factory floor. We have spoken with the company that can manufacture it for us, and they are ready to develop the mold and start production. The stoneware version will be microwave and dishwasher safe, FDA compliant, Cal Prop 65 tested, and we are aiming for a 15oz capacity. All we need now are the funds for the first production run.
WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME?
Other than your very own stoneware puking kitty? Or the thought of making possible thousands of cats puking thousands of sauces on thousands of entrees? Check out our super awesome rewards. Even if all you have is $1, you can vote on the 2nd saucy boat color. We'll have black, but leave the next color up to you: blue, orange, yellow, red, green, or white!
The Mr. B postcard series:
A sample from the Catronica EP:
Only the $10 reward tier gets the postcards, so if you'd like a set just add $10 to your pledge to receive the extra awesomeness.
WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH MY $?
As with any new design, the initial production run is the first financial hurdle to overcome. In actuality, this project will take more than $14k to complete. Your money will go toward:
- Prototype refinements (transitioning from glass to ceramic)
- Mold development and samples ($400)
- Minimum production order ($10k+)
- Calif. Prop 65 testing ($150)
- Fees to Kickstarter and Amazon Payments (8-10% of funds raised)
- Freight and packaging ($TBD)
- Warehousing ($1k)
- December: Kickstarter campaign ends. Send survey to backers and tally the color vote. Begin prototype refinement and mold development.
- January: Distribute Kickstarter rewards: postcard set and Catronica EP download code. Finalize prototype with manufacturer and begin production.
- April-May: Finish production, ship to warehouse.
- May: Ship saucy boat rewards to backers.
- June: Finish shipping saucy boat rewards.
PSST! PASS IT ALONG...Please share with anyone you think will get a kick out of it. This is what makes a successful Kickstarter campaign. Funding is all-or-nothing, and most projects are funded by friends and friends of friends.
THANK YOU FOR CHECKING OUT OUR PROJECT!
Risks and challenges
The greatest risk with the Saucy Boat is the over-saucing of your meal as you gaze at it's incredible life-like action. Since it is impossible to achieve 100% quality in mass production, we will have to inspect for and figure in the cost of factory seconds. Additionally, in transitioning from glass to ceramic the design will be slightly altered to better fit the contraints of that medium. It will also be larger than the protoype to fit closer to 15oz of liquid. Therefore the final design won't look exactly like the prototype but we will strive to maintain the same hurking kitty profile.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
