A bit about us
The concept of bamb-u was first created by Bol Varga and Adam McLeod from Adelaide, Australia, in late 2013. Our mission was to release high quality products that are both beautiful and sustainable. In a world full of so many disposable products, we saw a gap in the market for sunglasses and watches that look amazing while not hurting the environment.
In late 2014, thanks to Kickstarter and support of people like yourself, we were able to launch our first line of sustainable, handcrafted bamb-u sunglasses made from 100% sustainably farmed bamboo.
Where we are at
In just a few short months we managed to go from a start up, part-time business, to a growing and evolving company. We now have customers around the world including: The United States, United Kingdom, Europe, Asia and Australia. None of this could have been achieved without support from backers like you. So thank you.
To compliment our sunglasses, we have developed our first line of bamb-u watches. Our aim was to make watches that are beautiful, natural and precise but without the luxury watch price tag.
What's in it for you?
By supporting our campaign, you will be one of the first people to secure your bamb-u watch before we release them to the general public. We have loads of brilliant rewards on offer AND if you are quick, you will be able to grab one of our watches for half price. We'll even deliver it to your door for free! No matter where you are in the world! We'll even plant a tree for a deserving community in your honour. Plus every pledge gets your name on our social media platforms to say how awesome you are for helping us achieve our dreams.
Why did we choose bamboo?
We are not trying to reinvent the wheel. We know there are wooden watches on the market already. We also know they claim to be sustainably made. But did you know the wood used to make those watches can take an average of 30 years to grow? When cut, that's it, the tree is dead. It will take another 30 years to grow the next one. Bamboo can grow to a harvestable size in 2-4 years and when cut it doesn't need replanting, the base is still alive and regenerates the new growth for the next harvest.
Bamboo is also one of the few farmed plants that requires no pesticides, insecticides, fertilisers or any other chemicals, making it one of the most sustainable products around.
We spent the best part of 2014 speaking with manufacturers about designing prototypes, researching the highest quality timepieces for our budget and choosing the best manufacturing partner to make our watches. Once we had those pieces of the puzzle, we built our first prototypes, then built them again until we were 100% happy with the finished products. We are extremely proud of our watches and hope you will love them as much as we do.
Doing good with bamb-u
Deforestation destroys an average of 18 million acres of natural forests around the world each year. That's roughly 13.6 million football fields. We decided to do our bit to counteract that devastation. So with every watch sold, from Kickstarter, our website and our future distribution networks, we will be planting a tree through one of our charity partners.

Risks and challenges
Since our first project we have learnt a great deal about releasing products in Australia and abroad while working with our partnered factories abroad. The biggest issue we faced was getting our and ideas across to the production team without the process getting lost in translation. To rectify this we spent months looking for the right manufacturing partner that could not only meet our high demand for quality but could relate to us in a way that helped our ideas come to fruition. Another challenge dealing with an overseas manufacturing partner is that their working holidays are different to ours, meaning that orders could be delayed. To avoid this we have synced our working calendars to clearly be able to forecast ordering and production times. This has been an excellent advantage for both us, our manufacturing team and customers. They know when to expect orders and we know when to expect delivery.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
