About this project
I recently directed the inaugural presentation of Elisabeth at the Court of the Sun King, a weekend workshop of hands-on learning about baroque music and dance for violin, viola, cello and piano students, ages 8-13. It was a great success! Presented by The Music Academy, the workshop was hosted at the Penn State School of Music from March 9-11, 2012. Faculty from the NYC-based ensemble SIREN Baroque joined me to introduce students to period instruments, coach chamber ensembles and present a public faculty concert Saturday, March 10 in Penn State's Esber Recital Hall. Participating students performed in a concert with their chamber ensembles on the final day of the workshop. Check out our complete weekend schedule, read comments from participants and look for pictures from the event as we get them uploaded onto our workshop website!
Both students and auditing parents enjoyed themselves tremendously as they explored the culturally rich time of Louis XIV through the eyes of one of his favorite musicians, child prodigy Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre. Jacquet de la Guerre first astounded the court of Louis XIV with her talents as a harpsichordist at the tender age of five, and was later hailed by contemporaries as one of the most exceptional musicians of her day. Here is a clip of some of her music from a performance I put on at Penn State's Palmer Museum during Women's History Month in 2011.
Many operational expenses for the workshop (facilities, harpsichord, faculty salaries, registration materials) have been covered through generous support from the Central PA Suzuki Association, Pennsylvania/Delaware chapter of the American String Teachers Association and the Junior Baroque Music Festival.
We need your help to cover the following costs...
- travel to and from State College, PA, for SIREN Baroque
- printing (session handouts, concert programs, concert tickets)
- Saturday morning snack for workshop participants
- professional audio and video recording of SIREN Baroque's March 10 public concert
- professional photographer to cover the weekend (check out some of the fantastic photos on our website!)
- newspaper advertisements
Extra funds raised through our Kickstarter will go toward future presentations of Elisabeth at the Court of the Sun King and other historical performance workshops like it. Contact me at emilyrhale.wordpress.com if your community would be interested in hosting a future workshop!
