Submission Guidelines Now Posted!

To submit to TEMPORALLY OUT OF ORDER for the remaining open slots in the anthology, please read the submission guidelines closely.  They have been posted here:  http://jpsorrow.livejournal.com/444157.html.

Pre $10K Backer Extra! (Now Ended)

Laura Resnick has generously offered to give all backers who pledge $15 or more BEFORE we hit our goal of $10K a free ebook of her short stories called Maybe You've Heard of Me?  Here's her description of the collection:

In this collection of fifteen of her previously published short stories, Campbell Award winning fantasy author Laura Resnick riffs on the fantastical misadventures of the famous and infamous, both human and otherwise.  Robin Hood experiences supply and demand problems, Merlin the Magician tries to turn a recalcitrant musician into a war leader, a lonely boy meets the Loch Ness Monster, Ramses the Mediocre hires a spin wizard to turn him into Ramses the Great, King Arthur looks for meaning in his life as he faces his death, the world's most famous consulting detective assists a bloodsucking client who wants to be immortalized by an Irish novelist, and Santa tries to find work in a tropical clime for the abominable snowman.

First 400 Backer Extra!  (Now Ended)

Stephen Leigh has generously offered to give the first 400 backers of the kickstarter pledging $15 or more a FREE ebook of short stories called A Rain of Pebbles.  All of those who've already pledge $15 or more are already in on this incentive, so don't worry.  Everyone else, pledge now!  Here's a brief description of the ebook:

A RAIN OF PEBBLES for the first time collects all of Stephen Leigh's "Alliance Universe" short fiction in one place. The Alliance Universe was the setting for Steve's "Hoorka Novels" (SLOW FALL TO DAWN, DANCE OF THE HAG, and A QUIET OF STONE, which were collected together in the May 2013 omnibus ASSASSINS' DAWN from DAW Books ). Steve also wrote several short stories in that same universe, including the title story, "A Rain of Pebbles," which was chosen as Best Short Story of the Year by the readers of Analog Magazine. Also in the collection is "Chaos Night," a previously unpublished story in the Alliance universe. The short stories and novelettes included in this collection are:

• "Answer In Cold Stone"
• "Encounter"
• "A Rain of Pebbles"
• "The Mask of Night On His Face"
• "Chaos Night"
• "In Darkness Waiting"
• "When We Come Down"
• "Shaping Memory"

Each story is prefaced by a brand new introduction by Steve reflecting on the story and how it came to be written. Enter the Alliance Universe, where strange creatures and stranger worlds await!

First Day Pledging Extra! (NOW ENDED)

Everyone who pledges $15 or more on the first day of the kickstarter will receive a FREE ebook chapbook from Jean Marie Ward titled Four For More, which contains four stories: "Most Dead Bodies in a Confined Space", "Hoodoo Cupid", "Green Eyes", and "Lord Bai's Discovery". The chapbook will be delivered after the successful completion of the kickstarter.

About this project:

This project will fund a science fiction and fantasy anthology titled TEMPORALLY OUT OF ORDER, containing approximately 14 all-original (no reprint) short stories from established SF&F authors in the field—including David B. Coe, Laura Anne Gilman, Faith Hunter, Stephen Leigh, Gini Koch, Seanan McGuire, and Laura Resnick, plus others. The book will be edited by Joshua Palmatier & Patricia Bray, both editors of the DAW Books anthologies “After Hours: Tales from the Ur-bar” and “The Modern Fae’s Guide to Surviving Humanity," and the Zombies Need Brains LLC anthology "Clockwork Universe: Steampunk vs. Aliens."

But this project is more than that. It will help solidify a new small press called Zombies Need Brains LLC. Backers of this project will be helping to establish a new force in the SF&F field, a publishing house that will fill a gap in the genre that we feel is growing by creating a market for original anthology projects open to outstanding authors, regardless of their publishing house affiliations. While some publishers still offer anthologies featuring their house writers, the market for open anthologies has been shrinking. With your help, we’d like Zombies Need Brains LLC to fill this gap. ZNB will produce quality anthologies from leading authors, offering professional pay rates and featuring stellar cover art. As we did in our previous anthologies, we plan to include the very best stories we can find, spanning the gamut from bestselling authors to new, previously unpublished voices, including an open submission window if the kickstarter is successful, where anyone can submit their story featuring the current theme for a chance to be part of the anthology. And with your help, we hope that ZNB will then be able to expand into novels and other projects. We can't do this without you. Consider backing our Kickstarter and help spread the word. Just as Zombies Need Brains, we need your support to make this new small press a success.  The backers of the "Clockwork Universe" anthology helped set up the press.  You can help solidify that foundation.

And what is the project? Here are the details:

Temporally Out of Order:

While sitting at the airport waiting for a flight, I saw a phone booth with a note reading “Temporally Out of Order.” Obviously it was a typo, but the mistake takes on a whole new meaning when viewed from a science fiction/fantasy frame of mind. This anthology will take on the challenge of interpreting what “temporally out of order” could mean for modern day—or perhaps not so modern—gadgets, such as the cell phone, laptop, television, radio, iPod, or even that microwave or refrigerator! Edited by Joshua Palmatier and Patricia Bray, it will contain approximately 14 stories with an average length of 6000 words each.  The anthology will include short stories by:  David B. Coe, Laura Anne Gilman, Faith Hunter, Stephen Leigh, Gini Koch, Seanan McGuire, and Laura Resnick.  Additional authors will be added as stretch goals, including Jack Campbell, Jean Marie Ward, and Juliet E. McKenna. All other slots aside from the named authors will be filled by the open call for submissions following the successful completion of the kickstarter.

Cover Art

The image that will be used to design the cover art is a commissioned piece called "Temporally Out of Order" and was created by Justin Adams of Varia Studio.  The official cover for the anthology based off this artwork will be revealed during the course of the Kickstarter.

Timeline:  If the Kickstarter is funded, the intention is to have all stories handed in by the end of November 2014. We expect the editing and revision process to be finished by the end of December 2014 and the ebook and physical books to be designed, produced, and ready for release by the end of August 2015.

Funding will cover the costs of producing ebook in all standard formats (MOBI, Epub, PDF), producing mass market paperback versions of the anthology, cover art commission, payment of the editors, advances for the authors (at a minimum of 5 cents per word), and advertising and promotional expenses. Funding above the minimum would be used to increase the advances of the authors, allow for higher production values for the ebooks and books, increase the number of stories in the anthology, and increased advertising.

Stretch Goals

Stretch goals would include production of a hardcover version of the anthology, the addition of extra stories to the anthology, promotional bookmarks, an increase in pay for the authors, etc. We will be adding more stretch goals as those at the lower levels are achieved. Here are the stretch goals so far:

Stretch Goal:  BOOKMARKS!  At $12,500, every backer pledged at $20 or more will receive a free promotional bookmark for TEMPORALLY OUT OF ORDER and a free promotional bookmark for Stephen Leigh's novel IMMORTAL MUSE and all authors will be paid an additional 1 cent/word.

Stretch Goal:  At $15,000, Juliet E. McKenna will be added as a contributing author to the anthology AND one tuckerization reward level for Juliet E. McKenna's story will be added to the kickstarter AND all authors will be paid an additional 1 cent/word.

Stretch Goal:  At $17,500, Jean Marie Ward will be added as a contributing author to the anthology AND two tuckerization reward levels for Jean Marie Ward's story will be added to the kickstarter AND a free promotional item from Faith Hunter (such as a bookmark, postcard, etc) will be added to all reward levels of $20 or over AND all authors will be paid an additional 1 cent/word.

Stretch Goal:  At $20,000, Jack Campbell (aka John G. Hemry) will be added as a contributing author to the anthology AND all authors will be paid an additional 1 cent/word.

Other stretch goals will be added as the Kickstarter continues.

Add-ons

Add-ons are extra items that current backers can add to their current pledge level. These would include t-shirts and hats with the Zombies Need Brains LLC logo, etc. Add-ons can be added by backers at any reward level by simply clicking “Manage My Pledge” and adding on the amount of the add-on to their initial pledge. Once the Kickstarter has ended, we will ask everyone in the survey what the additional add-on amounts were for, so keep track of what you wanted added-on until that survey can be sent and returned to us.

Anchor Authors

Here’s a brief introduction to our anchor authors in the anthology:

David B. Coe:  David B. Coe is the award-winning author of fifteen novels and many short stories. Most recently, writing as D.B. Jackson, he has published the Thieftaker Chronicles, a set of historical urban fantasies set in pre-RevolutionaryBoston. Combining history, urban fantasy, and mystery, the Thieftaker novels, Thieftaker (Tor Books, 2012), Thieves' Quarry (Tor Books, 2013), and A Plunder of Souls (Tor Books, July 2014) have allowed David to combine his love of history with his passion for fantasy literature. A fourth volume, Dead Man's Reach, will be published in 2015.

Laura Anne Gilman: Laura Anne Gilman is the author of the popular Cosa Nostradamus novels, the Nebula award-nominated The Vineart War trilogy, and the Portals duology, in addition to short fiction from many fine publishers. Her next project is the weird west/divergent history  SILVER ON THE ROAD, coming from Simon & Schuster/Saga Press in 2015.  She has dipped her pen into the mystery field as well, writing the Gin & Tonic series as L.A. Kornetsky.

Faith Hunter: New York Times Bestselling author Faith Hunter writes fantasy in several subgenres:  the urban fantasy "Skinwalker" series, featuring Jane Yellowrock, a Cherokee skinwalker; the post-apocalyptic "Rogue Mage" series and RPG, featuring Thorn St. Croix, a stone mage; and the upcoming trilogy featuring Nell Nicholson Ingram, a woman who can siphon off the magic of others and is drawn into solving paranormal crime.  Faith writes mystery and thrillers under the name Gwen Hunter.  When she isn't writing, Faith likes to make jewelry, run whitewater rivers (Class II and III), and RV with her hubby and their rescued Pomeranian dogs.  Find her online at www.faithhunter.net, www.gwenhunter.com, and www.magicalwords.net.

Gini Koch:  Gini Koch lives in Hell’s Orientation Area (aka Phoenix, AZ), works her butt off (sadly, not literally) by day, and writes by night with the rest of the beautiful people. She writes the fast, fresh and funny Alien/Katherine “Kitty” Katt series for DAW Books, the Necropolis Enforcement Files series, and the Martian Alliance Chronicles series for Musa Publishing. As G.J. Koch she writes the Alexander Outland series. She also writes under a variety of other pen names (including Anita Ensal, Jemma Chase, A.E. Stanton, and J.C. Koch), listens to all kinds of music 24/7, and is a proud comics geek-girl willing to discuss at any time why Wolverine is the best superhero ever (even if Deadpool does get all the best lines). She speaks frequently on what it takes to become a successful author and other aspects of writing and the publishing business. She is also the Lead Editor at Raphael’s Village, an online, nonpaying zine. Because she wasn’t busy enough, Gini’s added on featured guest columnist, reviewer, and webcaster for Slice of SciFi and It’s Comic Book Day. She can be reached through her website at www.ginikoch.com.

Stephen Leigh:  Stephen Leigh has been writing science fiction since he was in grade school. His first professional sale was in 1975 (to Ben Bova, then the editor of Analog Science Fiction Magazine) and has been publishing regularly ever since then, both with short fiction and novels. His first novel, SLOW FALL TO DAWN, was published in 1981.  He has been nominated for and won several awards for his fiction over the years. He's written several stories for the WIILD CARDS shared world universe (edited by George RR Martin). He has written and published the occasional poems and non-fiction pieces, as well.

Seanan McGuire:  Seanan McGuire writes a great many things; it is in fact difficult to make her stop.  She adores anthologies, and is delighted to be participating in this one.  Rumor has it that she is the advance vanguard of an invading race of alien plant people.  This may, in fact, be true, as it would explain how she manages to do so many things at once.  Find her online at www.seananmcguire.com.

Laura Resnick:  Laura Resnick was born in Chicago, as were many famous gangsters. When she was a teenager, her family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where (according to Mark Twain) everything happens ten years later. Which explains Laura’s relationship with her deadlines. Laura's epic fantasy novels include In Legend Born; The White Dragon, which made the "Year's Best" lists of Publishers Weekly  and Voya; and The Destroyer Goddess, which Publishers Weekly describes as "a marvel of storytelling." She began her career under the pseudonym Laura Leone, as the award-winning author of more than a dozen romance novels, though she no longer writes romance.  Uniting her multi-genre talents in a new project, Laura wrote Disappearing Nightly, the first book of the Esther Diamond urban fantasy series, which combines fantasy, romance, comedy, and mystery. Subsequent releases in this series include Doppelgangster, Unsympathetic Magic, Vamparazzi, Polterheist, The Misfortune Cookie, and Abracadaver (November 2014), and there will be more Esther Diamond misadventures thereafter.

Stretch Goal Authors

These authors will be added to the kickstarter if their stretch goals are reached.

Jack Campbell:  Jack Campbell is the pen name of John G. Hemry, a retired U.S. Navy officer. His father (LCDR Jack M. Hemry, USN ret.) is a mustang (an officer who was promoted through the enlisted ranks), so John grew up living everywhere from Pensacola, Florida to San Diego, California, including an especially memorable few year on Midway Island.  John graduated from Lyons High School in Lyons, Kansas in 1974, then attended the U.S. Naval Academy (Class of '78), where he was labeled "the un-Midshipman" by his roommates.  John speaks the remnants of Russian painstakingly pounded into him by Professor Vladimir Tolstoy (yes, he was related to that Tolstoy).  He lives in Maryland with a wife who is too good for him and three great kids. The two eldest children are diagnosed as autistic but are slowly improving with therapies, education and medications.

Juliet E. McKennaJuliet E McKenna’s love of fantasy, myth and history led naturally to studying Classics at St Hilda’s College, Oxford. After a career change from personnel management to combine motherhood with book-selling, her debut novel, The Thief’s Gamble, was published in 1999.  She has written 15 epic fantasy novels, most recently The Hadrumal Crisis and The Chronicles of the Lescari Revolution, plus assorted shorter fiction including stories for Doctor Who and Torchwood. She reviews for web and print magazines and fits all this around her husband and teenage sons.

Jean Marie WardJean Marie Ward writes fiction, nonfiction, and everything in between, including novels (2008 Indie Book double-finalist With Nine You Get Vanyr) and art books. Her stories appear in numerous anthologies, such as The Modern Fae’s Guide to Surviving Humanity and the award-winning Hellebore & Rue.The former editor of Cresent Blues, she is a frequent contributor of video interviews and short subjects to BUZZYMAG.com.Her website is JeanMarieWard.com.

Note:  There will be an OPEN CALL for submissions for this project for the remaining spots in the anthology if it is successfully funded.  An announcement about when submissions will be accepted will be made then, with a strict deadline.

Editors

And here’s a brief introduction to the editors of the anthology:

Patricia Bray:  Patricia Bray is the author of a dozen novels, including Devlin’s Luck, which won the 2003 Compton Crook Award for the best first novel in the field of science fiction or fantasy.  A multi-genre author whose career spans both epic fantasy and Regency romance, her books have been translated into Russian, German, Portuguese and Hebrew.  Patricia lives in a New England college town, where she combines her writing with a full-time career as a Systems Analyst, ensuring that she is never more than a few feet away from a keyboard.  Find her online at www.patriciabray.com.

Joshua Palmatier:  A professor of mathematics at SUNY College at Oneonta, Joshua Palmatier has published six books with DAW—the “Throne of Amenkor” series (The Skewed Throne, The Cracked Throne, The Vacant Throne) and the “Well of Sorrows” series (Well of Sorrows, Leaves of Flame) under the pseudonym Benjamin Tate. His most recent novel is SHATTERING THE LEY, the start of a new series.

He has also published numerous short stories—“Mastihooba” in Close Encounters of the Urban Kind and “Tears of Blood” in Beauty Has Her Way (both edited by Jennifer Brozek), “The River” in River (edited by Alma Alexander), and "Daughter of the Sands" in Apollo's Daughters (forthcoming). Find out more at www.joshuapalmatier.com and www.benjamintate.com.

Zombies Need Brains LLC

Zombies Need Brains LLC is a newly created small press owned and operated by Joshua Palmatier. It will start by focusing on producing professional-quality science fiction and fantasy themed anthologies, initially funded by Kickstarters. The intent is to produce two anthologies a year, then branch out into more anthologies and other stand-alone books once the press has gained its footing. Check out the webpage at www.zombiesneedbrains.com and the online store at https://squareup.com/market/zombies-need-brains-llc.  You can also find Zombies Need Brains on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/zombiesneedbrainsllc) and Twitter (@ZNBLLC).

Risks and challenges

As with any production of a book, the timeline for delivery of the book may change due to unexpected delays in the editing process or the production process (such as a delay in printing at the press, etc). Every effort will be made to have the books ready for release and in backers’ hands by August 2015. Also, there is always a slight chance that life and circumstances will force a confirmed author to drop out of the anthology. In the unlikely event that an author cannot deliver a story for whatever reason, their slot would be filled with another published author. Since everyone involved—both anchor authors and editors—are professionals in the field already, there is no real expectation that there will be a delay or that the confirmed authors will not deliver.
