Announcement: A New Kickstarter!

Zombies Need Brains is proud to announce a new Kickstarter starting this coming Tuesday, October 20th, at Noon (Eastern)!  This time, we're doing something a little different.  It's still a science fiction and fantasy anthology, but this one contains short stories that parents can read to their kids (3-8 years old) at bedtime.  It's called FUNTASTICAL BEDTIMES STORIES.  Here's the preview link for all of the details:  https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/543968884/1565833146?token=3ebfb4e1.  And here's a short description and a list of some of the writers, actors, celebrities, etc. who will be participating:

Funtastical Bedtime Stories

Overview: Reading a bedtime story has been a time-honored tradition for parents and their kids since the dawn of the universe. Evening story time allows for bonding, entertainment, and relaxation. Yet many of these stories are outdated, a bit boring and well, have been told over and over again. Even the best stories can get a little stale after their 100th reading. That’s where this anthology comes in. We will present at least twenty brand new fun and fantastic (funtastical) takes on the bedtime story, each with its own unique, perhaps even modern, twist.

Stories will be written by a talented collection of SF & F writers, cartoonists, media people, and actors/writers. It will be loaded with entertaining reads for the entire family (even if they’re not sleepy . . .)

What it is: An anthology of 20 or more (1,000 – 6,000 word) fun fantasy or science fiction bedtime stories. Each story will revolve around sleep or bedtime or a related matter with a fun fantasy twist. The stories will be written by an assortment of SF&F writers, cartoonists, actors, actresses, and TV personalities, and will target an audience of parents and children ages 3-8. Each story will have an accompanying illustration. Participants include:  Elena Beloff, S.C. Butler (SF&F writer), Barry Dutter (DC Comics), Ron Ferdinand (Dennis the Menace), Esther Friesner (SF&F writer), Jim C. Hines (SF&F writer), Tony Isabella, Susan Jett (SF&F writer), Liana K (TV personality), Barbara Randall Kesel, Amy Lago (Washington Post syndicate), Jessica Lahr (Mrs. New York), Laura Magnusson (graphic audio), Jeff Mariotte & Marcy Rockwell (SF&F writers), Lee Nordling, Jody Lynn Nye (SF&F writer), Aprilynne Pike, Tony Sokol (Den of the Geek), and Bobby and Peter Timothy (cartoonists). The books will be edited by John Zakour & Joshua Palmatier, both authors published by DAW Books Inc.

Cover Art:  We once again have Justin Adams of Varia Studios doing the artwork for the anthology.  Here's what it looks like (available as an art print as part of the Kickstarter and at the ZNB online store):

I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone here who believed in Zombies Need Brains' latest Kickstarter anthology project for ALIEN ARTIFACTS and WERE- enough to back our project after its launch yesterday. I know that most of our first day backers were past project backers, and because of this, the new project reached 50% funded within 10 hours! THANK YOU for such a strong show of support!

If you haven't had a chance to pledge yet, there's still an Early Backer Bonus in play: the 24 hour bonus ebooks. If you fund before Noon EST today (August 12th), you'll get those ebooks, plus whatever reward level you pledge at. We pretty much blew through the first 50 backer incentive and the pre-$5K incentive yesterday. But still, FREE EBOOKS! Get in before noon!

And maybe, just maybe, we can reach fully funded within 24 hours. There's hope!

But again, THANK YOU for your confidence in ZNB and our projects!

Less Than 24 Hours Before New Kickstarter Begins!

And we’re down to less than a day left before the Kickstarter for ALIEN ARTIFACTS and WERE- begins. Hopefully everyone has set their clocks and marked their calendars for August 11th, Noon EST, which is when I’ll hit the start button. We’ve covered the special reward levels (including tuckerizations, signed books, and special items), the early backer incentives, the stretch goals, and some of the available add-ons. All that’s left is the lull before the storm. Again, there are a few changes being made to the Kickstarter model. Don't worry, we'll still have some great special items and rewards for backers to grab--such as tuckerizations, unique items from some of the anchor authors, and stretch goals for some extras--just as we did in the past Kickstarters. However, this time backers will simply be PREORDERING the anthologies: the base reward levels to choose from are $6 for an ebook ($12 for both anthologies in ebook) and $15 for a paperback ($25 for both anthologies in paperback). Those are the same prices we expect to use for the general release editions of the books in ebook and paperback, perhaps even cheaper! Those that preorder by backing the Kickstarter will get the anthologies early (before the general public release) and those that choose the paperback versions of the anthologies will also get a special Kickstarter Only edition with a limited print run.

Don't forget, you can now preview the Kickstarter, so check out all of the details--including Early Backer Incentives, all of the reward levels, High Backer Incentives, stretch goals, and anchor authors--through the following link: Preview.

Here are a few last minute changes and/or additions to the Kickstarter:

New Special Item Reward Level (and I mean special): Rosemary Edghill graciously donated a signed, first edition hardcover of THE SHADOW OF ALBION by Andre Norton & Rosemary Edghill. And yes, it’s signed by BOTH Andre Norton and Rosemary Edghill. It will be offered at a $100 reward level.

New Special Item Reward Level: Rosemary Edghill also donated a Science Fiction Book Club edition of THE SHADOW OF ALBION by Andre Norton & Rosemary Edghill. This one is signed by Rosemary Edghill. It will be offered at a $70 reward level.

Steve Miller & Sharon Lee Zombie: The reward level for Steve Miller & Sharon Lee's charm (for a charm bracelet) has been reduce to $60 (from $75).

And now the countdown begins. Less than 24 hours before the Kickstarter goes live. I’m a tangled wreck of nerves, sort of like Christmas tree lights when you pull them out of the storage box and realize you must have run out of patience last year and just stuffed them all in without any effort at organization. But soon it will all begin and hopefully we’ll be able to produce two new anthologies around about this time next year, with stunning stories from today’s best authors, both new and old. And to start it off a little early, here’s a concept sketch from Justin Adams for the cover art of ALIEN ARTIFACTS. We’ll introduce the final art as soon as it’s been finalized, but this should be cool enough to whet your appetite. *grin*

And as a special bonus, here's the preliminary sketch for the cover art for ALIEN ARTIFACTS:

Preview Link for Upcoming Kickstarter and a Plug

Ok, I've been asked by a few past backers if I could provide the preview link for the upcoming Kickstarter for ALIEN ARTIFACTS and WERE-.  I've not messed with the preview links before, but here's the tiny version that should get you to the preview:

http://tiny.cc/bfah1x

If it isn't taking anyone to the preview, let me know.  I'll update the tiny link to the live Kickstarter link once it goes live.

And since I'm here, I thought I'd plug another Kickstarter some of you might be interested in by one of the anchor authors of the upcoming Kickstarter:  Danielle Ackley-McPhail.  Here's a little bit about the project, with a link to the project.  It's nearing its end, so take a look at it today, not tomorrow:

THE SIDE OF GOOD / THE SIDE OF EVIL

Everyone loves a hero…but sometimes we can’t help but root for the villain…Indulge both impulses with this innovative flipbook anthology. After all, everyone is the hero of their own story and sometimes a change in perspective can make a world of difference.

Superheroes inspire us to be more than we can be, and on the flip side, Supervillains are reminders of the potential for darkness within us all. We are super-excited to bring you this fiction collection looking at the best and worst that mankind is capable of.

With stories by Peter David, Bryan Glass, Keith R.A. DeCandido, Aaron Rosenberg, Bob Greenberger, Gail Z. Martin, Janine K. Spendlove, Walt Ciechanowski, James Chambers, John L. French, Neal Levin, and Kathleen David this collection is guaranteed to be super…no matter to which side you pledge your allegiance.

Featuring a never-before-published Fury(TM) short story!

Upcoming Kickstarter: Early Backer Incentives!

The small press Zombies Need Brains LLC is getting ready to launch a new Kickstarter August 11th at Noon EST, this one targeting TWO new anthology themes: ALIEN ARTIFACTS and WERE-. After the successes of the previous two Kickstarters for Clockwork Universe: Steampunk vs Aliens (available now in trade paperback and ebook for the Kindle, Nook, and on Kobo) and Temporally Out of Order (available August 25th in trade paperback and ebook for the Kindle, Nook, and on Kobo), we feel that the small press is fairly stable, so there are a few changes being made to the Kickstarter model.

In this post, I wanted to highlight some of the Early Backer Bonuses and High Backer Bonuses. Basically, the earlier you back the Kickstarter, the more goodies you can get, including signed bookmarks and digital ebooks of short stories and novellas. Also, there are a few extras if you select one of the higher pledge levels. Here’s a run-down of all of the bonus incentives:

Early Backer Incentives:

First 50 Backers: The first 50 backers pledging $15 or more will get a signed CLOCKWORK UNIVERSE: STEAMPUNK VS ALIENS bookmark from Jean Marie Ward AND a signed Iron & Blood bookmark from Gail Z. Martin!

First Day Backers: All backers pledging $6 or more within the first 24 hours of the Kickstarter will get a free "Dangerous Dames" ebook (PDF) from Jean Marie Ward featuring 6 short stories AND a free Deadly Curiosities novella ebook "The Final Death" (epub, mobi) from Gail Z. Martin!

Pre $5K Incentive: All backers pledging $6 or more before the Kickstarter reaches $5,000 will get a free "Four for More" ebook (PDF) from Jean Marie Ward featuring 4 short stories AND a free Deadly Curiosities short story ebook "Buttons" (epub, mobi) from Gail Z. Martin AND a free Storm & Fury novella ebook "Grave Voices" (epub, mobi) from Gail Z. Martin!

High Backer Incentive:

$100 or Over: All backers pledging $100 or more will get a free ebook "The Disciple and Other Stories of the Paranormal" (epub, mobi, PDF) by Gini Koch, writing as Jemma Chase.

Note: All Early Backer and High Backer incentives will be sent after the successful completion of the Kickstarter.

So, if you want to get ALL the goodies possible, back early! Mark your calendar for August 11th and be ready to pledge at Noon EST, once the Kickstarter goes live. That doesn’t mean there aren’t cool things headed your way if you pledge later—there are stretch goals with bonuses for backers as well that I’ll talk about in a separate post tomorrow—but the earlier you pledge, the more you’ll get!

Once again, here's the cover flat for our upcoming second anthology release, TEMPORALLY OUT OF ORDER, available August 25th (available for preorder in Kindle and Kobo now):
