About this project
About this project:
This project will fund a science fiction and fantasy anthology titled CLOCKWORK UNIVERSE: STEAMPUNK vs. ALIENS, containing approximately 14 all-original (no reprint) short stories from established SF&F authors in the field—including Bradley Beaulieu, Caitlin Kittredge, Gini Koch, Scott Lynch, Gail Z. Martin, Seanan McGuire, and Ian Tregillis, plus others. The book will be edited by Patricia Bray and Joshua Palmatier, both editors of the DAW Books anthologies “After Hours: Tales from the Ur-bar” and “The Modern Fae’s Guide to Surviving Humanity.”
But this project is more than that. It will help start a new small press called Zombies Need Brains LLC. Backers of this project will be creating a new force in the SF&F field, a publishing house that will fill a gap in the genre that we feel is growing by creating a market for original anthology projects open to outstanding authors, regardless of their publishing house affiliations. While some publishers still offer anthologies featuring their house writers, the market for open anthologies has been shrinking. With your help, we’d like Zombies Need Brains LLC to fill this gap. ZNB will produce quality anthologies from leading authors, offering professional pay rates and featuring stellar cover art. As we did in our previous anthologies, we plan to include the very best stories we can find, spanning the gamut from bestselling authors to new, previously unpublished voices. And with your help, we hope that ZNB will then be able to expand into novels and other projects. We can't do this without you. Consider backing our Kickstarter and helping spread the word. Just as Zombies Need Brains, we need your support to make this a success.
And what is the project? Here are the details:
Clockwork Universe: Steampunk vs. Aliens: When aliens reach Earth, they encounter the clockwork mechanisms and Victorian sensibilities of a full-blown steampunk civilization. Inspired by the classic science fiction adventure tales of the nineteenth century, leading fantasy and science fiction authors will bring us tales of first contact with a twist, as steam power meets laser cannons . . . and dirigibles face off against flying saucers. Edited by Patricia Bray and Joshua Palmatier, it will contain approximately 14 stories with an average length of 6000 words each. The anthology will include short stories by: Bradley Beaulieu, Caitlin Kittredge, Gini Koch, Scott Lynch, Gail Z. Martin, Seanan McGuire, and Ian Tregillis, plus numerous others.
Cover Art: The image that will be used to design the cover art is called "Steampunk Octopus" and was created by Alex Broeckel. If you would like a print of this artwork, please back us at the "Artistic Zombie" reward level! The official cover for the anthology based off this artwork will be revealed during the course of the Kickstarter.
Timeline: If the Kickstarter is funded, the intention is to have all stories handed in by December 2013. We expect the editing and revision process to be finished by the end of January 2014 and the ebook and physical books (if funded) to be designed, produced, and ready for release by the end of May 2014.
Funding will cover the costs of producing ebook versions of the anthology in all standard formats (MOBI, Epub, PDF), cover art commission, payment of the editors, advances for the authors (at a minimum of 5 cents per word, a professional rate), and advertising and promotional expenses. Funding above the minimum would be used to increase the advances of the authors, allow for higher production values for the ebooks and books, increase the number of stories in the anthology, and increased advertising.
Stretch Goals: Stretch goals would include production of a mass market version of the anthology, production of a hardcover version of the anthology, and the introduction of interior art to the book. We will be adding additional stretch goals at lower levels as we near the funding mark of $10,000, including things like promotional bookmarks for all backers, promotional postcards, bookplates, etc.Keep watch!
Due to feedback and questions from readers interested in the project, we are going to offer up the paperback version of the anthology NOW rather than keeping it as a stretch goal. If you'd like the paperback version of CLOCKWORK UNIVERSE only (not the ebook), you can now pledge at the $20 Paper Zombie reward level.
If you have already backed the project at $15 or higher, you can add a paperback copy to your pledge by clicking the "Manage My Pledge" button on the right and adding $10 for each paperback that you'd like included. The paperbacks will be treated as add-ons for the remainder of the Kickstarter. You can get more than one paperback copy; simply add $10 for each copy that you'd like. We'll ask what the additional amount is for at the end of the Kickstarter in the survey. If you live outside the US, and have not already selected a reward level with a shipping charge, please add an additional $15 for shipping (only add $15 once, if you are requesting one or two paperbacks; if you're requesting more than two, contact me for the additional shipping charge); if your reward level already has a shipping charge, you do not need to add on additional shipping.
If you have NOT backed the project yet, but would like the paperback in addition to the rewards in another reward level (like "All the Anthologies," for example), then choose the reward level you are interested in and then add $10 to that for each copy of the paperback that you'd like. So "All the Anthologies" plus one paperback would be a total of $60. You are given the chance to add the $10 after you've selected the reward level. You must select a reward level at or above $15 to add on a paperback. If you live outside the US, and you select a reward level without a shipping charge, please add an additional $15 for shipping (only add $15 once, if you are requesting one or two paperbacks; if you're requesting more than two, contact me for the additional shipping charge); if your reward level already has a shipping charge, you do not need to add on additional shipping.
Thank you for your feedback! And your support!
PS: If you've already pledged for the ebook at the $15 reward level, but only want the paperback (not the ebook), you can click the "Manage My Pledge" button and upgrade to the $20 reward level.

Koch), all signed and personalized by the author, in paperback format.
Stretch Goal (Unlocked Early!): At $17,000, every backer pledged between $5 and $50 will receive a FREE specially-designed limited edition only-for-kickstarter-backers MAGNET involving the ZNB logo!
Stretch Goal (Unlocked Early!): At $17,000, every backer pledged at $50 or more will receive a FREE specially-designed limited edition only-for-kickstarter-backers T-SHIRT involving the ZNB logo!
Stretch Goal: At $18,000, every backer pledged at or above the $5 reward level will receive a coverflat of the back, spine, and front cover of CLOCKWORK UNIVERSE.
Note: There will be no additional shipping charges for stretch goal rewards below $20,000, even for backers outside the US.
Main Stretch Goal: At $20,000, a hardcover print version of the book would be produced. Backers who pledged $50 or more would automatically receive a copy of the hardback version in place of the paperback version if they have added that as part of their pledge. All other backers would be able to add a copy (or more) of the hardback version to their current reward level as an add-on (see below for add-ons), or they would be able to convert their paperback into a hardcover with an appropriate adjustment to their pledge. The hardback version would be a limited first edition printing done by Thomson-Shore, and would be made available only to the Kickstarter funders (plus a few additional copies for use in promotion, to garner reviews, etc). After the Kickstarter, the hardback would NOT be available to the general public.
Other stretch goals will be added as the Kickstarter continues.
Add-ons: Add-ons are extra items that current backers can add to their current pledge level. These would include t-shirts and hats with the Zombies Need Brains LLC logo, etc. Add-ons can be added by backers at any reward level by simply clicking “Manage My Pledge” and adding on the amount of the add-on to their initial pledge. Once the Kickstarter has ended, we will ask everyone in the survey what the additional add-on amounts were for, so keep track of what you wanted added-on until that survey can be sent and returned to us.
Paperback Add-on: If you'd like a copy of CLOCKWORK UNIVERSE in paperback format, either choose the $20 Paper Zombie reward level OR choose any other reward level at or above $15 and add on $10 for each copy of the paperback that you'd like. Add on $10 for EACH copy (so if you want 3 copies, that's $30 extra added on to your reward level). If you live outside the US, and have not already selected a reward level with a shipping charge, please add an additional $15 for shipping (only add $15 once, if you are requesting one or two paperbacks; if you're requesting more than two, contact me for the additional shipping charge); if you're reward level already has a shipping charge, you do not need to add an additional shipping charge.
T-shirt Add-on: If you'd like a t-shirt with the vertical Zombies Need Brains logo used on the spine of the book on back, add $15 each for a small, medium, large, or extra-large size to your current reward pledge. Add $20 each for larger sizes. If you'd like the ebook in addition, please add on an extra $5; if you'd like more than one copy of the paperback, please follow the directions of the Paperback Add-on above. Cover Artist: Find out more about Alex Broeckel, the artist for "Steampunk Octopus," the work we'll be using for the cover, at his website www.alexbroeckel.com.
Anchor Authors: Here’s a brief introduction to our anchor authors in the anthology:
Bradley P. Beaulieu: Bradley P. Beaulieu and his novels have garnered many accolades and most-anticipated lists, including two Hotties—the Debut of the Year and Best New Voice—on Pat’s Fantasy Hotlist, a Gemmell Morningstar Award nomination for The Winds of Khalakovo, and more. Brad recently released The Flames of Shadam Khoreh, the concluding volume of “The Lays of Anuskaya” epic fantasy trilogy, and Lest Our Passage Be Forgotten & Other Stories, Brad's premiere short story collection. Brad recently sold a new epic fantasy trilogy, “The Song of the Shattered Sands,” to DAW Books in the United States and Gollancz in the UK, which will be released in late 2014. Brad also co-hosts Speculate! The Podcast for Writers, Readers, and Fans at www.speculatesf.com. For more, please visit www.quillings.com.
Caitlin Kittredge: Caitlin started writing novels at age 13. Her first was a Star Wars tie-in. Fortunately, she branched out from there and after a few years trying to be a screenwriter, a comic book writer, and the author of copious amounts of fanfiction, she tried to write a novel again. Her epic dark fantasy (thankfully) never saw the light of day but while she was struggling with elves and sorcerers she got the idea of writing a story about a werewolf who fought crime. Two years and many, many drafts later, she pitched Night Life to a bevy of agents and one of them, Rachel Vater, sold the series to St. Martin’s. Caitlin collects comic books, print books, vintage clothes, and bad habits. She loves tea, loud music, the color black (especially mixed with the color pink) and ghost stories. She can drive a stick shift, play the violin and knows more English curses than American ones. Caitlin lives in Olympia, WA with two pushy cats. You can find her online at www.caitlinkittredge.com.
Gini Koch: Gini Koch lives in Hell’s Orientation Area (aka Phoenix, AZ), works her butt off (sadly, not literally) by day, and writes by night with the rest of the beautiful people. She writes the fast, fresh and funny Alien/Katherine “Kitty” Katt series for DAW Books, the Necropolis Enforcement Files series, and the Martian Alliance Chronicles series for Musa Publishing. As G.J. Koch she writes the Alexander Outland series. She also writes under a variety of other pen names (including Anita Ensal, Jemma Chase, A.E. Stanton, and J.C. Koch), listens to all kinds of music 24/7, and is a proud comics geek-girl willing to discuss at any time why Wolverine is the best superhero ever (even if Deadpool does get all the best lines). She speaks frequently on what it takes to become a successful author and other aspects of writing and the publishing business. She is also the Lead Editor at Raphael’s Village, an online, nonpaying zine. Because she wasn’t busy enough, Gini’s added on featured guest columnist, reviewer, and webcaster for Slice of SciFi and It’s Comic Book Day. She can be reached through her website at www.ginikoch.com.
Scott Lynch: Scott Lynch's first novel, The Lies of Locke Lamora, was published in 2006 and was a finalist for the World Fantasy Award. Lies and its sequel, Red Seas Under Red Skies, have been published or resold in twenty-five countries. The long-awaited followup The Republic of Thieves hits shelves in October, 2013. Scott's short fiction has appeared in multiple anthologies, including Swords and Dark Magic (2010), Tales of the Far West (2012), Fearsome Journeys (2013), and Rogues (forthcoming), as well as Popular Science. Since 2005, Scott has been a paid-on-call firefighter for a city in St. Croix County, Wisconsin. Find him online at www.scottlynch.us.
Gail Z. Martin: Gail Z. Martin is the author of Ice Forged in her new The Ascendant Kingdoms Saga (Orbit Books), plus The Chronicles of The Necromancer series (The Summoner, The Blood King, Dark Haven & Dark Lady’s Chosen ) and The Fallen Kings Cycle (The Sworn and The Dread). She is also the author of two series on ebook short stories: The Jonmarc Vahanian Adventures and the Deadly Curiosities Series. Find her online at www.AscendantKingdoms.com.
Seanan McGuire: Seanan McGuire writes a great many things; it is in fact difficult to make her stop. She adores anthologies, and is delighted to be participating in this one. Rumor has it that she is the advance vanguard of an invading race of alien plant people. This may, in fact, be true, as it would explain how she manages to do so many things at once. Find her online at www.seananmcguire.com.
Ian Tregillis: Ian Tregillis is the son of a bearded mountebank and a discredited tarot card reader. He works at Los Alamos National Laboratory by day and pens moderately entertaining lies by night. He is the author of the Milkweed Triptych (BITTER SEEDS, THE COLDEST WAR, and NECESSARY EVIL), the standalone novel SOMETHING MORE THAN NIGHT (forthcoming from Tor), and the Clakkers Trilogy (forthcoming from Orbit). His website is www.iantregillis.com.
Note: A select group of authors will be invited to submit stories to fill out the remaining slots in the table of contents for the anthology. There will not be an open call for submissions for this project, although we hope to do open calls for other anthologies in the future. We will not be accepting unsolicited manuscripts of any kind.
Editors: And here’s a brief introduction to the editors of the anthology:
Patricia Bray: Patricia Bray is the author of a dozen novels, including Devlin’s Luck, which won the 2003 Compton Crook Award for the best first novel in the field of science fiction or fantasy. A multi-genre author whose career spans both epic fantasy and Regency romance, her books have been translated into Russian, German, Portuguese and Hebrew. Patricia lives in a New England college town, where she combines her writing with a full-time career as a Systems Analyst, ensuring that she is never more than a few feet away from a keyboard. Find her online at www.patriciabray.com.
Joshua Palmatier: A professor of mathematics at SUNY College at Oneonta, Joshua Palmatier has published five books with DAW—the “Throne of Amenkor” series (The Skewed Throne, The Cracked Throne, The Vacant Throne) and the “Well of Sorrows” series (Well of Sorrows, Leaves of Flame) under the pseudonym Benjamin Tate. He has also published numerous short stories—“Mastihooba” in Close Encounters of the Urban Kind and “Tears of Blood” in Beauty Has Her Way (both edited by Jennifer Brozek), and “The River” in River (edited by Alma Alexander).Find out more at www.joshuapalmatier.com and www.benjamintate.com.
Zombies Need Brains LLC: Zombies Need Brains LLC is a newly created small press owned and operated by Joshua Palmatier. It will start by focusing on producing professional-quality science fiction and fantasy themed anthologies, initially funded by Kickstarters. The intent is to produce two anthologies a year, then branch out into more anthologies and other stand-alone books once the press has gained its footing. Check out the webpage at www.zombiesneedbrains.com.
Still not convinced? Here are some blurbs from professionals in the business:
You can find an interview with DJ Grandpa's Crib here: http://www.djgrandpa.com/ This kickstarter is featured at time stamp 29:25.
“I've been waiting patiently for Joshua Palmatier and Patricia Bray to invite me into one of their anthologies. Now, I'm excited to say the wait was worth it! With a cool theme, great editors, and other awesome authors involved, this is going to be a can't-miss anthology. You're gonna love what we all come up with, I guarantee it! (Oh, and I also guarantee something else: Poofs.)” --Gini Koch
"I have had the privilege of working with Josh and Tricia on both sides of the publishing fence--both as a book store manager and as a contributing author for The Modern Fae’s Guide to Surviving Humanity. They are the folks I go to when I have questions in regards to the wild world of being an author, as well as when I am looking for advice as I have started working on my own anthologies.
Both Josh and Tricia are incredibly knowledgeable and professional and great to work with. They know how to pull together an exceptional anthology--from approaching and then later wrangling authors, offering edits, and making sure the word gets out and their authors get noticed.
And apart from that they are fun to work with. They love coming up with their anthology themes, and when they decide on one, they go for it with everything they have. It is hard to avoid getting caught up in their enthusiasm.
They know the business, they know the people, and they are themselves good people to work with. This is a project worth being involved with. You will love every minute of it and the final product will blow you away.” --April Steenburgh
Note: If you choose the cover art (Artistic Zombie) or one of the tuckerization reward levels and would like to also get the ebook or paperback version at one of the other reward levels, do the following: after choosing your art or tuckerization reward level, click on the "Manage My Pledge" button at the upper right of the page. This will allow you to add an additional amount to your pledge. Add in the dollar amount for the other reward level that you would be interested in receiving (so if you'd like the "Electronic Zombie" level in addition to the art or tuckerization, add $15 to your original reward level pledge, if you'd like the "Sampler Zombie" level in addition to the art or tuckerization, add in $100 to your original reward level pledge, etc.). At the end of the project, if it is funded, we will ask you what the additional monetary amount was for. YOU MUST START WITH THE ART OR TUCKERIZATION LEVEL FIRST, since those are limited reward levels, then add in the other level. If you want both the art and the tuckerization, PLEASE CHOOSE THE TUCKERIZATION FIRST and then click the "Ask a Question" button and ask. We will give you instructions for how to do that individually.
Risks and challenges
As with any production of a book, the timeline for delivery of the book may change due to unexpected delays in the editing process or the production process (such as a delay in printing at the press, etc). Every effort will be made to have the books ready for release and in backers’ hands by May 2014. Also, there is always a slight chance that life and circumstances will force a confirmed author to drop out of the anthology. In the unlikely event that an author cannot deliver a story for whatever reason, their slot would be filled with another published author. Since everyone involved—both anchor authors and editors—are professionals in the field already, there is no real expectation that there will be a delay or that the confirmed authors will not deliver.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
