For 20 years I have been teaching a landscape photography workshop called "A Natural Eye", and for over half a dozen years I led National Geographic seminars on "The Art of Nature Photography". I continue to witness people buried in what they are told they need to know: All the technical stuff about cameras and the software, while hungry for ideas on seeing and bringing their vision into a finished image. The Photo Cards came out of this.

Late one evening I made a dozen cards, each with an image on one side and an idea on the other. I passed them out at the next workshop, and people ate them up. They wanted more. Years later, I am going to press!
I have worked hard at organizing the cards. There are 6 categories under SEE: Perspective, Layers, Movement, Visualize, Interpret, and Essence; 6 categories under THINK: Basic Skills, Light, Tools, Focus, Compose, and Fine Tune; and 15 DO cards offering reflective advice.
Whether you want to break into new ways of making a photograph, or look to gain a better understanding of light, composition, and fine-tuning images, or perhaps you are stuck and want to jump start the way you see the world, or simply want to leisurely look through the box of images, I hope the Photo Cards will take you on an important and fun journey.

I hope the SEE THINK DO cards will become an important contribution to photography education, and I also see them as a beautiful box of jewels. In today's world where most photographs will remain on hard drives, never to see the light of day, I wanted to make something you could hold, think about, and hang out with.
I am working with my favorite designer, Tim Bruce of lowercase, inc out of Chicago, and an amazing printer in Vancouver, Blanchette Press. The box measures 6 inches by 4 3/8 inches by 1 inch, and will hold 144 cards in 2 stacks. The cards are 4 inches by 2 5/8 inches.

I truly appreciate your support. The funding I am asking for is going entirely to the printing of the Photo Cards. It will not cover all the costs, and for that reason will cross my fingers that we exceed our goal.
I had a lot of fun thinking about the rewards. I have a strong past in darkroom and photographic printing, have produced a book, educational DVD, an online video series, and have mentored students through the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops. Everything I have delved into is being offered as a reward. The images below are part of the rewards options.

I am a photographer, teacher, and storyteller committed to opening our eyes to the natural world. I have taught photography and creativity for National Geographic and leading photographic institutions and schools around the world. I received the Excellence in Photographic Teaching Award presented by the Santa Fe Center for Photography, and recently Photo District News named me one of America's best photography workshop teachers. My book, "One Thousand Moons", was published in 2004, the dvd, "A Natural Eye Workshop", in 2009, and "A Natural Eye" video series in 2015.
Risks and challenges
The ball is rolling, and I am committed to bringing this project into the world. The final designs are finished by lowercase, inc. and I have scheduled the printing with Blanchette Press. We are hoping to have the cards at the beginning of February, and shipping by the middle of the month.
