About this project

Bernard "Pretty" Purdie is arguably the most recorded drummer in the world.  This project is a book about his life from a modest upbringing to his role of drummer to the stars.  He has been the drummer for such super artists as:

  • Al Green
  • Alan Jackson
  • Aretha Franklin
  • B.B. King
  • Bob James
  • Count Basie
  • Donny Hathaway
  • Duke Ellington
  • Hall & Oates
  • Isaac Hayes
  • James Brown
  • Jeff Beck
  • King Curtis
  • Louis Armstrong
  • Marvin Gaye
  • Michael Jackson
  • Steely Dan
  • The Isley Brothers

And literally thousands of others (we'll try to have a full list in the finished book and it won't be easy)!

One of the main reasons that we are using Kickstarter rather than a big publisher is that we want total control.  Many celebrities books concentrate on "dishing the dirt."  Bernard's story is much more interesting.

He grew up in suburban Maryland and become a professional drummer when the local bandleader couldn't keep it together.  In the meantime, he worked for the mayor, Mr. Stanley, as a paperboy and was the first black student to integrate and graduate from high school in the State of Maryland after segregation.

He moved to New York City to follow his dream and became known as the drummer who could play anything.  He was often used to "sweeten" tracks on records where the drummer in the band couldn't quite cut it in the studio.  There are countless hit records - that you have heard - where Purdie played the drums, got paid day wages, and never received credit.

Purdie's has been a rough and scramble existence, living -- as they say in the current hit movie -- "Twenty Feet From Stardom."  (By the way, if you liked that movie, you will love this book!)

Five Ways to Participate.

By way of thanking Bernard's fans for their loyalty and continued support, we are offering five ways for backers to participate, as you can see on the right.  If you want a special advanced copy of the book, we have generated two very special editions.

1. Collectors Slipcover Edition.

The first edition will consist of only 100 books.

It will be published as a over-sized 11" x 14" tabletop hard cover book made to the exacting standards of old world craftsmanship, The book and custom-made slipcase will be made of deluxe woven cloth over sturdy binder's boards, embossed and stamped with gold-colored metallic foil. The interior will be printed in full color with over 100 photographs on premium matte art text stock, while the binding will be reinforced and Smyth sewn for extra strength and durability. This book will be a showpiece for your library, office or sitting room for years to come. Also included will be a special four page insert consisting of photos of Bernard's parents, grandparents and siblings together with a pull out poster, suitable for framing.

Your name will actually appear in the book on a page listing patrons - if you choose.

Meet Bernard Purdie and sit in on a session.

To further thank those of you who pledge for the Collector’s edition, Bernard would like you to be his guest at a private recording session and CD Release Party on a date to be announced.  At that event, it will be Bernard's pleasure to thank you in person and sign your book. Mr. Purdie, himself, is a warm and wonderful human being.  We hope that you will have a chance to meet him and listen to some of his wonderful stories in person.

2.  Dedication Edition.

Also available, for those of you who would like to pledge, will be the first 1,000 hard cover books.  To thank you, Bernard will personally sign them with your choice of dedication.

Book Printing Plan

We have a great book designer named Mike Krupa who has 40 years of experience in the practical aspects of book making and is committed to the project.  Mr. Purdie is also intimately involved with the production. Once the project is fully funded, we think it will take about 6 months to have the books printed and ready to be sent out to our backers. We have a PO Box set up and our assistant is ready to go.  We will send out periodic updates on our progress on printing the books, but In case there are any questions you can contact us through www.bernardpurdie.com/book.  We also plan on setting up a phone number if you prefer to call.

Peace Always

Whether you decide to pledge now or not, Bernard would like to thank you and all of his fans for the many years of love and support.  Peace always.

Risks and challenges

Years of interviewing and compilation of personal family pictures (as well as pictures with some of Purdie's musician clients) is done, but a lot of hard work remains. Going forward, project challenges include collaboration, design and production. Fortunately, Mr. Purdie is intimately involved and we have a great book designer who knows the practical aspects of book making and is committed to the project.

Your support will help fund professional design, printing, shipping. As always with Kickstarter, without your funding, this project will not happen. We can only accept your money if the project is fully funded. If we fail to fully fund the project, all money will be returned. But if we succeed and are fully funded by the deadline, we will produce a beautiful book. Your support is a way we can thank Bernard "Pretty" Purdie for all of the years of great grooves in our favorite songs.
