About this project
"The Confessions of a Witch Bitch" just got more bitchin'!
"The Confessions of a Witch Bitch" is a "Bewitched" meets "Mean Girls" story. The series was created by actress/writer/director, DeAara Lewis and tells the story of a scorned witch named Alexandria who is banished from her wealthy coven for her constant revenge gimmicks. She is sent to work in the “real world” with other women and has to quickly learn the art of office politics and how to solve her problems without casting spells on her colleagues. However, things do not go as planned.
The show will explore various aspects of office bullying and women relationships in both a comical and dramatic way.
Fabulous question. I think the video will help.

Great question! Well, you know my name is DeAara Lewis. I am a graduate of the University of Memphis' Film and Television program (B.A.) and I currently work as an Audio/Visual Technician/Programmer/Editor. I have produced two other films, one was a short entitled, "The Forgotten Ones." It was a dramatic film about the consequences of suppressing the memories of sexual abuse.
My last offering was a feature film entitled, "Tricks.", a dramedy about the lives of six Memphis prostitutes who struggle to survive and thrive in a business that the majority view as immoral and taboo. The latter played to sold out audiences including at "The Hollywood Black Film Festival" and was responsible for getting my name out as a serious filmmaker in my hometown. Also, as you can see, I like doing edgy material.
I've also served as a producer on other projects. Feel free to check me out at: IMDB/DeAara-L-Lewis.
According to the Workplace Bullying Institute, 27% of Americans admit to being bullied at work while another 15% admit to silently witnessing it.
Office Bullying is also bad for your health. 60% of workplace victims who were there for a prolong period of time suffered a heart attack or stroke. As if those numbers are alarming enough, 80% of bullying victims reported debilitating anxiety and 52% reported panic attacks.
Check out the video below on my experiences being bullied at work.
This is a very debatable question and depending on who you ask, you will get a different response. This question is also the backdrop of "The Confessions of a Witch Bitch" series as Alex struggles with forgiving or striking back and the consequences that come with both.
Some anthropologists have argued that revenge is a normal human need. In many tribal cultures, retaliatory acts helped keep people in line where formal laws and enforcement did not exist.
Many people who have ever wanted to get even with somebody at their job has probably entertained, at least once, casting a spell or putting a hex on them (I know I have). There are a number of websites that cater to this very topic, alone.
And actually, the idea started out as a Zombie Slayer and then a super hero. I love comics, graphic novels and fantasy movies and wanted to do a show about a character with supernatural abilities being placed in everyday, very human situations.
I was talking to my oldest sister on the phone one night and she was ranting about a woman at her job who would not leave her alone. I could totally relate to this because I have dealt with my fair share of workplace bullies and was trying to help her figure out ways to get this woman to back off. We then started joking around about the possible things she could do if she was a super hero and that's when it hit. I talked to my younger sister about it and she suggested a witch because super heroes arcs are overdone. When I ran the idea by my mother, she just started naming all types of situations that happened at her job and what she really wanted to do. She also suggested I call the character, "The Witch Bitch" to make it stand out more and further describe Alexandria's arc.
I'm gonna spend it all on the time machine I've been working on in hopes of taking over the world! No, seriously, another awesome question! The $15,000 will be used to cover our basic cost of production. It is the bare-bones amount that we need to get it going and it will pay for the following:
Again, $15,000 just covers the bare-bones costs of a crew. However, with this money we can hire talented individuals who know how to create outstanding work on a small budget.
The goal of the "The Confessions of a Witch Bitch" is two part. The first is to bring awareness to this very subtle but very destructive form of bullying. It is my goal to have more protection put in place for employees and stiffer consequences for those who bully at the office. The second goal has been the mission of DeAara Lewis Productions from the start - to create versatile, leading roles for women of color that have commercial appeal.
When I was growing up, I wanted to be dramatic actress but I also loved science fiction and graphic novels. However, I didn't see anyone on television or in the movies who looked like me playing the types of characters I wanted to play and wanted to create for others. I've been told that the audience is simply not there, African-Americans have limited roles in Hollywood because we are hated overseas (where the money comes in) and countless other reasons, but I know these "excuses" are not true. I am convinced that the only people who believe these false truths are those who actually want things to be that way.
Pioneers like Shonda Rhimes have proven that if you tell good stories, the right audience will embrace them. They will not care about skin color, body size or any of those insignificant things if the story is strong, they can emotionally connect to the characters and it is entertaining. This is a platform I want to do my part in continuing to evolve and provide opportunities for other talented actors who otherwise would not have one.
Risks and challenges
The main challenge we anticipate is going to be the shooting schedule. It is our goal to have the entire series shot in 35 days or less, however, most actors (including myself) have day jobs and we will have to accommodate that. To cut down on this happening, we are going to cast the best actors who also have a flexible work schedule. We shot the feature film, "Tricks." mostly on weekends for about 20 days in a a span of two months. We now have much more experience so our goal is to shorten that time window and work consecutive days instead of just on weekends.
The other challenge we anticipate is having the T-shirts produced and fulfilled within the time span we have given. Once the campaign is over, we will have to collect all of the backer's physical addresses and that will take some time depending on how many backers we have and the accuracy of the information.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
