WE DID IT! FUNDED with 2 weeks to go!!
Wow. It's been a great ride so far. I say let's get serious and see if we can't make these last 2 weeks even more fun and more beneficial for the project. I've pared down my stretch goals to keep it really simple. They're all about books and publishing. If we meet these goals, TaleSpins' trade show presence will be that much greater because I'll have more branded product to sell.
Take a look and see how increasing your pledge and meeting these new goals will also get you reward upgrades!
[The Original Project Page Story]
Thanks so much for checking out my book project. I've self-published 2 short eBooks for YA-and-up readers, both of which have been well received in the book blogosphere. In addition, "8" has become a bit of a cult hit on Facebook. I'm seeking funds here on Kickstarter to publish a hardcover printed collection of the 3 TaleSpins stories. It'll be about 120 pages.
Wait, 3? . . . Yes, my first task is to finish writing the 3rd TaleSpins story by the end of 2012. This won't cost me – or you – any money, but when it's done, I will have type design and spot illustrations and a cover created for the printed book. Pages will look like these 2 (non-sequential) samples:
The real book pages will be the same size, of course! ;)
As you can see, TaleSpins stories are written in rhyming verse. Addressing issues like conformity and cliques, 8, Penny and Jack'd do have messages, but rest assured, those take a backseat to good characters and story. But don't take my word for it – here are more excerpts, and the goodreads pages for 8 and The Plight and Plot of Princess Penny.
Also, part of the KickStarter funding will go toward creating print promotional material (e.g. art prints, bookmarks, cards, and T-shirts). In 2013, I plan to lease booth space at trade shows such as: ComicCon, WonderCon and The LA Times Festival of Books.
The TaleSpins book will be sold online and at the trade shows (along with the art and shirts). This presence will help build the brand and hopefully attract the attention of indie bookstores and/or a traditional publisher with mass-market retail connections.
So . . . if I'm lucky enough to get your support and fund my project, that's where the money will go. The asked-for/hoped-for $6K total comes from actual design, printing and booth-leasing quotes. And that's the minimum. Should we hit that amount in time, I've got some great, property-building stretch goals lined up that I can't wait to share with you!
If you've read this far, you already have my sincerest gratitude. Should you throw a few bucks my way, you can get much more than that. (See rewards.) Thanks!
There's even more info – and a sense of the way I think and write – on the TalsSpins Books blog.
