Middle Ground (Canceled)
A new public radio show covering news, politics & culture in between California & the eastern seaboard. No more "flyover country".
Middle Ground will be a one hour weekly podcast and radio program focusing on all the life and vitality and stories in what we call "fly over America". The program will be hosted by Celeste Headlee, former co-host of The Takeaway.
“We’re going to be covering all of the states east of California and west of the Eastern Seaboard,” Headlee said. “I think there is a real hunger for shows focusing on Middle America. After years of hearing about every new martini bar in New York, there are people who want to hear stories about the rest of the country. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for at least a decade. I think a lot of people out there feel the same way I do. Every time I bring the idea up, people say they can’t believe no one has done it yet.”
Middle Ground debuts at the end of September, tying in with a Kickstarter campaign soliciting funds for the first six months of operating costs.
The end product will be a weekly podcast plus weekly carriage on public radio stations. Each program will feature interviews from Middle Americans covering politics, culture, arts, news and daily life. NPR's former Political Junkie Ken Rudin will join the program every other week for the kind of entertaining and spirited coverage of Middle American politics that only Rudin can do. Headlee says " We hope to get pitches and contributions from listeners and reporters all over Middle America. There are great stories out there and great reporters that haven't been heard on national broadcasts before."
Included in the launch staff are veteran editor Jacob Conrad, who worked with her onDay to Day, and Sue Goodwin, former executive producer of NPR’sTalk of the Nation, which went off the air in June. Collectively, the members of the team have more than half a century of experience in public broadcasting at a national network.

Risks and challenges
Producing a weekly radio program or podcast is like riding a galloping horse. There's no time to get off. Every week there are ideas to evaluate, interviews to set up, scripts to write, sound to edit and finishing touches that make the final product something our listeners "have to hear." We are ready for this challenge with a team of people who and have spent decades producing daily programs and , if need be, can pull together a great hour in less than a day ... even when it means no sleep.
In addition, all though out our production process we will be building "a shelf." We will produce every week more material we need to fill one hour so we always have great content ready to go when we need it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
