About

OPENING: OCTOBER 15, 2011, CoLab, Austin, TX

We want to provide a counter-cartography, a remapping, of Marfa, TX.

Our multiform large-scale collaborative installation deliberately de-centers what Marfa is popularly known for, the permanently installed works of artist Donald Judd and his selected contemporaries. Rather, the central piece is a larger-than-life sized reproduction of an outdoor altar built less than half a mile from the Chinati Foundation (renovated Fort D.A. Russell that houses the largest part of Judd's works and collection). The altar honors the Virgin Mary and was built by Hector Sanchez, a local Marfa resident, following her apparition to him in the mid 90s. It drew a significant amount of pilgrims in the months immediately following its installation, and continues to draw devotees today. The Sanchez family home where the Virgin appeared is also the childhood home of Hipolito Hernandez, grandfather of Josh T Franco, one of the artists. The work will be installed at Co-Lab artspace in Austin, TX, October 2011. It is comprised of four main components:

1) Film - Alison Kuo will direct this part. It will incorporate the extant, remarkable film footage of the original apparition (white shadowy figures of Mary and Christ in a tree trunk), as well as filmed interviews with local Marfa residents, and film documentation of the three main artists' "double pilgrimage" as young folk with an active interest in both the altar and the contemporary artworks by Judd and his associates.

2) Miniaturized Architecture - Josh T Franco is currently constructing miniature (approx. 1/12 scale) reproductions of the buildings of Fort D.A. Russell renovated by Judd's own hand and artistic direction. These will be laid out on the outdoor grounds of Co-Lab according to their situatedness in Marfa. Also included will be miniature versions of the iconic cement block groupings arranged by Judd on the grounds of Chinati.

3) Home Interior Simulation - Joshua Saunders will take over the interior of Co-Lab with a loose reproduction of the interior of the Sanchez (formerly Hernandez) home where the original altar builder Hector Sanchez lived prior to his untimely death a month after the altar's completion. Some film and original collaborative works by the artists will be incorporated.

4) The Larger-Than-Life Altar - Composed of papier mache and other materials, this 8-10 foot reproduction of Sanchez's altar will be situated behind the Co-Lab building beneath a tree, as it is arranged in Marfa. During the first night of its installation at Co-Lab, guest artist Natalie Goodnow will lead a procession through the East Side Austin neighborhood where the space exists, culminating in a ceremonial, participatory prayer at the altar itself.

We need money for travel to and from Marfa, materials (lumber, cement, salvaged objects, film equipment, etc.), and eventually a U-Haul to travel works from New York to Texas, where Kuo and Franco currently reside and work.
