NUESTRA HISTORIA

OUR STORY

Created in 2013 in Mexico City, Terremoto is a unique print & online magazine about contemporary art in both Latin and North America.

Present physically and for free in more than 20 countries of the Americas through an ingenious peer-to-peer system of distribution, as well as in Europe in selected bookstores, we deliver first-hand documentation and challenging art criticism to our fast growing audience of dedicated professionals and art students.

Terremoto is fully bilingual in Spanish and English, and ambitions to be the voice of a new generation of Pan-American art practitioners as much interested in forms and aesthetics as in theory, literature, and politics, with a strong focus on the local problematics of our continent. Our goal is to become the publication of reference about Latin American Art within the next five years.

WHERE ARE WE NOW

Our project is in a crucial phase of its development in which we need to secure the funding of the magazine for 2017. Until today, Terremoto has existed thanks to the generosity and confidence of our advertisers, our donors and to the accomplishment of a couple of grants. However, it is now insufficient.

With the Kickstarter's money, we’ll be able to:

  • Secure the printing of the two remaining issues of 2017
  • Propel the entries of our reviews program and make our distribution conclusive.

In terms of our distribution system, we'll have the opportunity to:

  • Improve and accelerate our distribution process. The goal is that the magazine arrives to all its distribution venues in no longer than 6 weeks after its launch in Mexico.
  • Start a subscription program offered in Mexico, United States and European Union.

This will allow us to focus more forcefully on boosting the exposure of the artistic actuality in Pan-America and on continuing to produce the critical content we’re committed to, free for everyone.

OUR PLAN

After 8 numbers of the magazine, we are now confident with our work schedule. The realization of each issue consists of the commissioning of the contributions, edition, translation, copy editing, design, print and distribution. Our team is made up of a chief editor, a managing editor, a communications and project manager and a blog editor. The design is undertaken by Studio Katsu.

In 2017, we will publish two more issues, to be released in June and in October. Each issue is created in a two-month time range. It is then put into circulation for up to 5 months after its printed launch and presented in various cities and international art events of the corresponding season. 50% of our magazine exists online: the online publication of its 12 original articles happens at a weekly rhythm, one article per week. We also publish 5 museum and gallery exhibitions per week, two reviews per month and a daily image of our one-artist-per-month online collaboration project, Marginalia. With every new issue, the dissemination of a relevant, critical and often never-seen-before content reaches more readers.

Risks and challenges

Our biggest challenge at the moment is to establish a sustainable economical model. We all know independent press is facing a lot of
transformations these days and art criticism doesn't escape it.

Crowdfunding is necessary in this stage of our development as an extraordinary funding input that will help us get through the year, as well as back us up while implementing a sustainable model for the project, as we are conscious of the short-term aspect of these kind of initiatives and the pressure this puts on our public.

This campaign will serve, on the one hand, for us to keep on working this year, and on the other, to establish relationships with culture philanthropists with the hope that they'll look forward to continue supporting the project beyond these one initiative.
