About this project

Jamming the Blues

Hi, my name is Pete Madsen and I am seeking to raise funds to finish the first volume of a two-part book project called “Jamming the Blues.” Over the past year and a half I have been teaching a series of classes at the Freight and Salvage (performance and educational facility in Berkeley, CA) called “Jamming the Blues.” The goal of the class has been to teach guitar players how to jam over 12 bar blues changes. The class has been very popular and along the way I have compiled a wealth of material I would like to put in book form.

There are other books on this subject available but what sets this one apart is the attention to detail. I walk the student through the solos in the book step by step. Each chapter has sections devoted to scales, licks, riffs and solos that are explained and analyzed. There will be CD recordings to listen and play along with (recordings will have solos and backing tracks). Musical notation will include standard and Tablature.

The chapters of the book would be divided by key; e.g. Chapter 1 Key of A, Chapter 2: Key of E…and so on. For this first volume I would cover four keys: A, E, G, C. Breaking the chapters up this way allows the guitarist to focus on the elements of soloing within a given range (key), but it is also made clear throughout the book that this knowledge is transferable to other keys.

I have shortened the book from its original six chapters to four. The book is about 85% complete and only needs a few additions and recordings to be complete. The money raised would be used to fund recordings and printing costs. I work out of my Berkeley-based studio where I use computer software to contract the musical examples and where I have recording equipment that will be used to produce the CD(s) that will accompany the book. I hope to have the book finished by December 2012.

Risks and challenges

This project needs an attention to detail and a focused touch. I have written several guitar instruction books for well respected publishers (Hal Leonard), as well a self-published books, so I know exactly how to go about getting the job done. Marketing, now that's a different matter....
