Over a year ago, ƒ/D (www.fslashd.com) was born out of a passion for pinhole photography. The goal was to show the world what can be done with the simplest tools in photography. In the time since, we've displayed hundreds of photos, interviewed numerous talented photographers, and spread a wealth of info on pinhole techniques.
About the ƒ/D Book of Pinhole
While photobooks are a great way to collect photography, the pinhole photography community is greatly under-represented on bookshelves. In response, we ran a call for entry asking photographers to show us what they've seen through a pinhole. We received an overwhelming response from around the world, and selected 99 photos to publish in a book created to celebrate pinhole photograpy.
In all, the book features 60 black & white and 39 color photos. The photographs represent techniques that demonstrate the “pinhole look” in general as well as the unique ways in which pinhole works with motion and time, bent film planes, infrared, and other techniques and formats.
The book will contain:
- 99 pinhole photos: 60 B&W, 39 color
- Introductory text and descriptions of the techniques used to produce the photos throughout the book
- A directory of the photographers included in the book, so that you can find more work by your favorites
The book will be printed to these exacting standards:
- Offset printing - the standard for the highest quality books
- 100# paper - paper nerds know that's good stuff
- Soft cover - made from heavy cover stock
- 8 inches X 8 inches - not too big, not too small!
- Over 140 pages total - lotsa photos! Technique intros!
Who This Book is For
The ƒ/D Book of Pinhole was compiled for all fans of photography.
For the curious, it serves as a great introduction into pinhole as well as providing a visual roadmap for your creative exploration.
For the experienced pinhole photographer, the book provides inspiration and ideas to continue your journey.
For lensed photographers, this visual journey shows new ways to approach photographic image making and what can be done with a long exposure.
For photography collectors, the book will include a directory of included photographers and info on where to find more of their work.
Why a Kickstarter?
We're using Kickstarter to generate the funds needed for the best printing quality possible. As mentioned above, the book will be offset printed - a printing method that uses the large plates to set the ink. Because offset printing takes so much work to set up, it requires a large initial order with the print fulfillment company.
About the Rewards
What's in it for you? We're glad you asked!

Obviously - this is the center of the project! For $25, you get The ƒ/D Book of Pinhole! 140+ pages of glorious pinhole photos! Black and white! Color! Two page spreads! Technique descriptions so that you can apply to your own practice! And a directory of the photographers so that you can see more of their work.
The Book + Editor's Photo - $40
There are 99 fantastic photos in the book - but none are by ƒ/D Founding Editor Kier Selinsky. At this backer level, $40 gets you the book plus your choice of 1 of the 3 following photos by Kier, printed at 8" size.
The Book + Press Signature - $75
We're really excited about this package. $75 gets you the book plus a Press Signature. What's a Press Signature? When you offset print a book, the pages are printed on large sheets with multiple pages on each side. In the bookmaking process, the Press Signatures are cut apart and then bound to make the pages of the book.
The Press Signatures will each measure 23"x35" and will have 8 pages printed on each side. The signatures delivered will be randomly selected from all available. Unfortunately we cannot show a preview of this product until the full run of books are printed. We're excited to offer this raw piece of the bookmaking process that will make an excellent piece of wall art!
Everything! - $90
You get it all! You get the book! You get the print by Kier Selinsky! You get the Press Signature! All for just $90!

f/D was founded by Kier Selinsky and Libby Selinsky in order to bring greater awareness to pinhole photography. We promote pinhole as an artform on its own, as well as a tool to broaden the perspective of all photographers and visual artists.
Subjective Press is the Publishing Imprint that was founded by Kier and Libby to promote the work of ƒ/D as well as other arts and conscientious publications. The ƒ/D Book of Pinhole will be the first offering from Subjective Press.
Risks and challenges
We're very confident in our ability to deliver the project on time and on budget. The project photo and video show portions of the proof book - this book is READY FOR PRODUCTION!
We've been in close discussions with our book printer to be sure that our book is set to their exacting standards. We've also already ran the successful proof edition of the book. So we're ready to go!
Where it's possible to run into delays is in the transit. We should get the Kickstarter funds within 2 to 3 weeks of closing the funding. Our book printer has promised to get us our books within 5 to 6 weeks of order. Add in 2 weeks for shipping and handling to you, and that is why we set a fulfillment date of March for our backers. If we run into any such delays, we'll be completely transparent on the progress and impact.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
