What is the FreeRider
The FreeRider Pannier takes the heavy bag off your back, and allows for a comfortable commute. It's designed to be an easy access commuting solution for hauling your favorite backpack, messenger bag, grocery bag, or 12-pack of beer. Made to be versatile, with a large main pouch and an accessory pocket to store your lock and a few tools. The mounting hardware is compatible with most rear bike racks, and features a lock that secures the pannier to your bike. This allows you to leave the FreeRider on your bike and always know it's going to be there when you need it. The bag will be made in two durable materials: nylon fabric upcycled from a local tent and awning company, and bike tubes upcycled from local bike shops. The FreeRider will be manufactured at Green Guru's production facility in Boulder, Colorado.
How it's Unique
- It's made from upcycled and recycled materials.
- It can be secured to your bike so it's always there when you need it.
- It holds almost anything (including larger items).
- It works on any rear bike rack.
- It collapses to a very thin profile when not in use.

After riding bikes in the city for years we've found that carrying your daily gear comfortably and safely can be a real problem. So, we set forward on a project that attempts to change the way people carry their belongings on a bicycle. It started with research; we found that many products were overly complicated, required numerous steps to operate and were very expensive. A revelation occurred when we realized that the pannier could be part of the bike and give you a place to stash your belongs while riding. This is our solution for making your commute as comfortable as possible.
Backpacks and messenger bags are great for walking but are uncomfortable to wear while riding, especially when fully loaded. Traditional panniers are not designed to be adaptable enough to meet the demands of the urban cyclist. They are not comfortable to carry off of the bike, and do not allow the user to stow larger items. Our solution is a pannier that can fixed to the bike, easily accommodates a backpack or large cargo, and protects your items from the hazards of the road. We call this the FreeRider Pannier.
Starting with its functionality, the FreeRider Pannier is designed to easily accommodate whatever bag you prefer to carry and enable a quick transition from riding to walking to riding again. It is lightweight and well designed to ensure a smooth commute everyday. We won’t skimp on anything to make this the coolest and most functional commuter pannier. It will feature a large main compartment and an accessory pocket, which will provide a place to store your lock and a few tools. An original solution for securing the pannier to your bike has been devised, so you won’t have to worry about leaving your FreeRider at the bike rack. We are right now in the final stages of prototyping and testing our design.
The FreeRider began as a class project at Metro State in Denver. The goal was to design a cycling related product that fit with the current Green Guru product-line. The first prototype was so well received that we decided to continue. With the help of Green Guru Gear, our goal is to begin a small production run and gain feedback from consumers about the product and its potential in the marketplace.
We need your help
This project is nearly ready for production, but we need your help to push us to the finish line. Our fundraising goal will be used to help us make the final design changes to our FreeRider Pannier, make final prototypes and start production. A limited run of FreeRider Panniers will be produced exclusively for this Kickstarter campaign and will commemorate all those who shared in the vision for our final product!
For this project, we have the benefit of working with Green Guru. They will be helping us prepare for production and optimize the design. Green Guru will also be handling the production and shipping of our product, so rest assured that you will be getting a quality product delivered to you as quickly as possible.
Who is Green Guru
Green Guru is a great company to be working with. We share their passion for preserving our beautiful planet. This is their mission:
As a small Boulder, Colorado business, we face the challenge of competition for customers and resources. Boulder is a hotbed of groovy start-up companies, and great ideas, and we strive to stand out as a company rooted in solid core values and beliefs which have become intrinsic to our identity as a company. We feel as though we are doing not only our consumers a service, but the world we live in as well. With so much post-consumer waste going to the landfill, we are all about redirecting this flow of trash into something useful. Our biggest challenge is getting all of the material we have turned into sturdy, reliable products. Essentially, we take one man's trash and turn it into something you can treasure and depend on for years to come.
Who is Coloradical
Coloradical is a T-shirt and apparel company in Denver, Colorado. The Coloradical brand is based on the fun adventures and awesome people you will encounter in colorful Colorado. The company has grown quickly over the last few years and has just opened a store front at 3109 East Colfax Avenue.
Risks and challenges
Our FreeRider Pannier has just finished up with its developmental stage and we are now working on developing prototypes for our final design.
Our fulfilment team faces the challenge of modifying these prototypes to our design team’s specifications. This process takes time, and money for materials, but will ultimately lead to the most functional and unique design. The bag we feature in our Kickstarter video is the closest, we feel, to how we want our final product to turn out.
Once the project is funded, we will move onto production locally at Green Guru Gear in Boulder, CO USA. Their team of material processors, cutters and sewing operators will produce the Freeriders with the highest level of quality.
The tubes will be sourced from local bike shops and the fabric will be sources from a local tent manufacturer. The hardware will be sourced from a local distributor who provides much of the outdoor industry with pieces and parts for their gear.
It will take about 6-8 weeks to cut and sew the bags. We will be making some dies to help in the cutting process as well as some jigs to make lining up the pieces of the pannier easy.
After each pannier is sewn, it will be QC'd then packed for shipment. It will take a few days to get the shipping details together, then they will be on the way to the backers.
We don't foresee much risk because of solid experience Green Guru Gear has with making sewn products. Working with Green Guru Gear to produce these panniers helps ensure they will be produced with quality, durability and timeliness in mind. You can see their other products at www.GreenGuruGear.com to get a better idea of what they can produce.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
