The Samurai Lords Kickstarter aims to expand the Steel fist miniatures 28mm Samurai range by adding new packs of miniatures.
The Samurai were probably the most fantastically armoured warriors that ever existed, their armour was highly customised to their own taste and weathly Samurai liked to stand out on the battlefield. This historical background makes for producing some most interesting miniatures to represent this unique period of history. From a gaming perspective this period in many ways mirrors the wars of the roses in England, because the many Samurai Nobles or Daimyo as they were known' each had their own distinctive looking armies or clans, and competed with each other for power, the support of one powerful clan would completely change the course of a battle, many times they changed sides at crucial moments. If you and others from your club each had a clan you could well simulate this kind of intrigue.
I aim to recreate many of these daimyo and the insignia of their clans into highly detailed 28mm miniatures, your support will go a long way towards how many I can cover. Most of the miniatures that are covered are copied from surviving armour, in the updates I will show pictures of surviving armour to show such outlandish armour really existed.
Why use Kickstarter? Because Samurai miniatures is somewhat of a niche interest currently, many of the characters I'm making have never before been made into miniatures, further to make these miniatures requires considerable expense once a pack is released sometimes it takes some time to recover costs, by using kickstarter these costs can be covered up front which then allows for quicker expansion of the range.
On to the funding goals!
First funding goal Honda Tadakatsu, Mori Hidemoto, Standard bearers or static infantry, advancing matchlock men.
The first funding goal will unlock 1 mounted Daimyo 1 dismounted Daimyo and 2 needed foot packs static infantry, and matchlock men or Teppo.
First mounted Daimyo. Honda Tadakatsu
Honda Tadakatsu was one of Ieyasu's most dependable Generals, a legendary warrior, he was reputed to have survived 100 battles without injury, he was considered by Toyotomi Hideyoshie to be one of the two finest samurai in Japan. His black armour is equally outstanding finished with two huge antlers. If you select Honda you will receive a pack containing him plus two standard bearers carrying his unique banners.
First foot Daimyo. Mori Hidemoto.
Mori Hidemoto was an able General and a veteran of the Korea campaign. At Sekigahara he commanded the huge wealthy Mori clan. His contingent the Mori clan interestingly had some of the most flamboyant sashimono of the period that can be selected as part of some of the pledges. The armour for this miniature is conjectural, however the Mori clan Daimyo reportedly often incorperated peacock feathers into their armour, this is based on a real Mori clan kabuto, a most impressive catfish tail kabuto covered in peacock feathers, and also he wears a feather surcoat. If you select Mori as a pledge you will recieve a pack containing him plus two standard bearers carrying his distinctive banners.
These are inculded in the first funding goal as they are a important part of the clan pledge, which needs teppo as one of the basic foot packs, also the static foot work as standard bearers and give an idea of the the figures that may be used as standards bearers in daimyo packs. But they can also be ordered separately and used as low ranking Samurai or Ashigaru. Both these packs come with separate heads and sashimono the teppo have fixedweapons and the foot come with separate weapons. So these are very versatile miniatures allow you to customise a specific look for your clans. You can choose what clan sashimono, head type and weapon type you want to compliment these packs.
If we reach £4000 you can add to your selection Shimazu Yoshihro.
Shimazu Yoshihiro was a very famous late Sengoku Daimyo, Known to be wise and a skilled Tactician. Here he is depicted in later life, about the time of Sekigahara. At Sekigahara he famously held back his Clan possibly in revenge for his advice being ignored, when he did finally commit to battle it was too late, but the Shimazu Clan launched such a fierce charge they almost reached Ieyasu himself before being driven back. The miniature you are backing is pensively stroking his beard deciding his next move. If you select Shimazu Yoshihro, you will recive him plus two standard bearers carrying his distinctive personal banners.
Strectch goal 2 £5000 Kato Kiyomasa.
If we reach £5000 you can add to your selection Kato Kiyomasa.
Kato Kiyomasa was considered to be a legendary General and Warrior. With a long history of exploits he was also known as an expert at building castles, plus for his highly distinctive and iconic armour style, particularly for his helmets, known as a Catfish tail kabuto it would have made him stand out across the field. These helmets were made of hollow leather or paper mâché on a metal base. The miniature you are backing is on a rearing horse, shown again in his more mature years, this miniature was based on a early painting of him. If you select Kato Kiyomasa you will recive him plus two standard bearers carrying his distinctive banners.
Stretch goal 3 £6000 Ishida Mitsunari.
If we reach £6000 you can add Ishida Mitsunari to you selection
Ishida Mitsunari was the prominent commander of the western army at the battle of Sekighara, he was famously skilled for court intrigue, with many Daimyo mistrusting and resenting him. This was to be his undoing at Sekigahara because many Daimyo changed sides or refused to move from there positions purely out of resentment for him. The miniature is thus shown as he was at Sekigahara rushing around trying to motivate the many undecided Daimyo. If you select Ishida Mitsunari you will receive a pack containing him plus two standard bearers carrying his distinctive banners.
Stretch goal 4 £7000 Tokugawa Ieyasu.
If we reach £7000 you can add Tokugawa Ieyasu to your selection.
Tokugawa Ieyasu was the eventual winner of the turbulent sengoku era. A skilled and patient commander, he bided his time and then at Sekigahara he defeated the western Daimyo and secured the title Shogun or Dictator, and by 1615 finally removed the remaining opposition, leading to the long peaceful Edo period. Here he wears one of his favorite armours seated and wearing a mask, this was sometimes convenient as it could easily be one of his doubles standing in as him. If you select Tokugawa you will receive a pack containing him plus his two standard bearers carrying his distinctive banners.

Risks and challenges
This is an already established business with many happy customers. Plus most of the figures for the first goals are already sculpted, so you know what you will receive, there is possiblilty of some delays at the casters but not more than a couple of months, also the casting firm I use is one of the best in the business and produce very high quality castings. Regarding anything unsculpted it will worked on once unlocked in the order it is unlocked and progress reports will be regularly posted. Money from the campaign will be put in a dedicated account and used to release the miniatures once they are completed. So the worst case scenario,if I go blind and can no longer sculpt for example! Is the selection you can choose from may not be as broad as hope for. But as you may have noticed you can choose from the whole Sekighara line plus any miniatures in the campaign already sculpted so all backers will receive their choice of available miniatures. Therefore the only potential risk is the miniatures that will be shown as concept sketches and not yet sculpted.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
