About The Project

This is the first edition of The 24th Centruy Project The story follows main protagonist Darcondia and the mystifying Lady Eonjay who meet one day in a great dark forest that separates two rival kingdoms; Meridian and Madison. Looked in the heat of battle, spies are constantly trying to infiltrate the other side, so earning a strangers trust is a tall order. However through incredible circumstances and trials, the two grow closer and closer - in love and in battle. Soon when a recently discovered technology threatens to destroy both kingdoms, both sides rally together to stop their own destruction.

This Role Playing game is being developed for mobile platforms and will take full advantage of the unique touch controls in today's most popular smartphones.  The graphical style is retro and the art direction is Manga.  It is broken into two parts.

The first part - "The Times" -  introduces the user to the battle concepts and main characters; as well as the underlying mythos for which this world is built upon.

The second part - "The Anti-Times" seeks to nullify the conventional wisdom of the players surroundings and introduce some theoretical concepts.  In this section, faith comes head to head with doubt and the true nature of Space Search and EXploration (SEX) is revealed.

The battle system is designed to be real time where certain actions require more Time Points to complete.  Advancing you skills can afford you more Time Points which will allow you do do more moves.  The battle system is will be something you can actively take part in or something you can just sit back and watch if you chose to do so and have enough faith in the ability of your characters.  This battle system also feature an original implementation of the pinch to zoom concept.

There are hundreds of items and weapon to collect and even create through the alchemy system.  There are complex equations that go into each character's attributes and can be manipulated by your choice of equipment and character augmentation.  However, the presentation is meant to be simple and easy for anyone to digest   

Where Will Funding be Spent

The main purpose of fundraising is to purchase equipment and labor necessary to complete this vision.  I need artists and I need equipment. The cut scene are going to be produced in flash and imported as FLA files.  These files will add value to the story by adding full motion movies to assist in storytelling.  Other testing materials are required as well to test on different devices. Other items include graphical tablets, art programs and of course the money I will be paying the artist(s) themselves. If anyone know where I can find some skilled artists in Philadelphia, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! Artwork consists of the bulk of what needs to be completed.

What Has Already Been Completed

Region Mapper:  This application takes the separate image files (each map has multiple layers for background, grass, main, decor, lava and other layers) and and builds it into and entire region.  Each slice is 960 x 640 (iphone 4 resolution) and the maximum region size is unknown... I haven't encountered a limit as of yet.

Dpad Input:  This program takes screen touches and transfers them into input. It manages what frame of the player is displayed and centered them on the region (map) where applicable.  Also handles collision detection against layers of region that can be crossed.

XML - Parser:  This is probably my most helpful tool.  It allows me to add data on my computer and transfer it into my project.  I do most of my large data collection in Access Spreadsheets and then export the data as XML.  This includes data about characters, items, maps; you name it this program can parse it to an actionscript array file.

Message:  Tool used to produce configuration RPG style texts. Can take touch input from screen before progressing.

Other helpful tools including a Bitmap scaler and more.  Also hundred of images files have already been imported and configured.  This includes most weapons and a large about of system icons.

The Story:  Is complete from beginning to end.

Character models:  Most main character model sprites have been complete.  This is not to be confused with character artwork.

In order to immerse the player in the experience, I am composing an extensive soundtrack.  Each track is designed to invoke the appropriate emotion at that particular moment in the story.

Risks and challenges

The biggest risk to completion of this project is the amount of hours in a day I can invest to a given project; especially given that I am a full-time student and an full-time employee. I compensate for this by building applications that are scalable. This means my tools are reusable and can be implemented in many different areas of development.
This allows me to save time as I build my game. One example of this is the xml parser I designed that will handle ANY amount of outside data I need to import for any reason whatsoever. Whether I need mapping data or character data or even item data, the import process is handling and prepared for actionscript by a single (and relatively small might I add) routine that does all the data processing for me. This practice of creating scalable classes makes development as proficient as possible. Its also the greatest advice I can give to any aspiring developer.
