About this project
Only three weeks until my departure. My journals and camera are packed! Now, thanks to thirty-four generous backers, Carlos and I are more than halfway to our goal -which is just four days away! Yikes!
We would sincerely honor your pledge of support so that we can achieve our goal of $3,500 by Thursday! Check out our Newly Added Rewards! Thank you, thank you in advance!
An excerpt from the book:
“By convention there is color, by convention sweetness, by convention bitterness, but in reality there are atoms and space.” Democritus (c. 460 – c. 400 B.C.)
There are spaces between everything. We know that from basic science lessons. Molecules are not connected. Nothing is solid. There are gaps between everything. Synapses. I am a creature who is most alive when hovering over a gap, landing, surveying and taking off again…
The Unknown is what I know best. It’s reliable. I know it’s there. For me, the power and discoveries that exist in the unknown beckon me…onward! My curiosity about the magic and mysteries and information that lie ahead repel any sense of fear. I embrace the idea of the unknown. It propels me into the adventures that create my life. There are those who are reluctant to explore the dark, distant and indistinct aspects of life on our planet. Many cling to the edges of free-floating fear and live lives dictated more by conservative convention and practical rules rather than dwell comfortably with the concrete knowledge that nothing is solid. Gaps are everywhere. They divide and join everything. And falling into gaps and climbing free and leaping safely over gaps are some of the reasons I love my life so much.
The ground isn’t solid. Marriage isn’t solid, not all friendships are solid and not many careers are solid. It’s simply and scientifically true: the Universe is not very solid. And by extension, solids are only relatively more solid than liquids which are only relatively more liquid than gas…
At this particular crossroads in my seven-decades-long life. I am focusing on the other side of some identified and unidentified gaps. And I am preparing to journey to them, cross them, explore them.
I want to breathe my way around the world and excite my senses with that which is still foreign to me. I want to catapult myself into new realms of thought, to travel to the other side of my mortgage problems---that means acknowledging the fact that I could lose my house, that I could become homeless, that I could be broke…dazed and confused. But not scared. I want to navigate my way over, under, around, and through the gaps in my understanding of our amazing earth and her diverse and remarkable cultures.
Sometimes, in my dreams and fantasies, I sense--or imagine--hands reaching across the seas, inviting me to be part of something bigger than the good life I have here in New Mexico with my community of friends and family and activities. At seventy years of age, I recognize that parts of me are moving (slowly, surely) towards an inner stillness…and still, I find myself driven by a strong voice of longing and a recurring caw, caw, calling from that familiar unknown; the mysterious unexplored—commanding me: “Move. Onward. Now!”
As part of this project I will be collecting “Wishes/Prayers For Peace” and planting them around the world - - somewhere along my route. I will hand write the “prayers” on beautiful earth-shaped, seed-encrusted papers. My wish is that these “prayers” will be a physical manifestation of our collective desire for peace among all peoples. With a pledge of $25 or higher you may E-mail your wish/prayer to me at StillMoving@thewonderinstitute.com and I will transfer it to handmade wildflower seed encrusted paper to be planted somewhere around the world -- with heartfelt thanks!
I want to share this experience widely, and with your help I am confident we can achieve our goal.
This will be a journey that is greater than my personal odyssey. This is a journey about the world we live in and the people who share it with us. This is the first time that I have embarked on a project of this magnitude. It is very personal to me.
Two weeks is not a lot of days to raise this much money. However, I still think we can do it; I think we should do it, and hope you will help me.
PLEASE NOTE: Our budget is much greater than our Kickstarter goal. I set my goal at the bare minimum, which will be used to publish this story in e-book form, and to cover marketing costs, permissions, legal fees, editing and graphics, and of course to deliver your rewards! Additional funds will enable me to promote the book to a big-name publisher, or perhaps to self-publish. At the very least it will boost my marketing budget, which is never a bad thing.
I am extremely grateful to everyone who pledges at any level!
Please help to make this project become a reality by spreading the word!

Risks and challenges
Taking risks and rising above challenges are essential parts of most great undertakings. My STILL MOVING project has many components and many unknowns. As this project moves from stage to stage, it will be essential to deal successfully with the inevitable roadblocks that develop.
For me, the writing process will be the most comfortable part of the whole project. I have laid out a clear outline with the help of my Project Manager, Carlos Beuth. The book is divided into chapters--based, in part,on the stops along my travels, and on a structure that will incorporate musings and memories (much of this is already completed). This will ensure that the writing can be accomplished since there will be fewer decisions to make along the way. I intend to be finished with the first complete draft by the time I return. My thoughts, conversations, observations, musings, images, and anecdotes will be ready to fine tune and "perfect" when my circling of the World is finished! Next, I must (and will) challenge myself to bring to my writing relevant experiences and insights that will be inspiring and meaningful to my audience
Two very real challenges will be the editing of the manuscript and the marketing of the finished product. My approach will be to leverage the things I am good at and to outsource the things I am not. In order to manifest a meaningful, well-produced product from my complex cluster of loosely gathered ideas and experiences, I know that it is essential to collaborate with others. I welcome the chance to work with a small team--all of whom take pride in the quality of their work. Several qualified people have signed on to assist me in those areas where I lack technical expertise. Fortunately, with your support I will be able to engage the help I will need at this step----a line editor who will double check proper spelling, punctuation, grammar, and formatting and who will look, with a fresh eye, for consistency of voice throughout the material. Formatting, editing and incorporating the images I will bring back, and navigating the technicalities of the platform we choose for creating an ebook will be another area where I will use your funds to engage the professional support needed to breathe life into this book. A project of this magnitude is a collaboration, which entails the risk of unforeseen delays and hold ups. The team I chose to work with will determine how smoothly we will be able to navigate through this process.
The next challenge will be to promote and publicize the book widely. I know something about marketing from my years of representing artists and their projects. Marketing is difficult. It requires originality, persistence and connections. I possess these traits. Still, there are the constraints of time and money. In the past, I have been able to produce first quality results despite shortages in those areas. I plan to network as much as possible at this step, and to get the word out in a number of smart, creative ways. I have already received assurances from several interested and qualified connections. I am thankful for the promises of support in reviewing and blogging about the book. I plan to use Facebook and my personal blog to start creating anticipation for the book's arrival by telling the story of its evolution and growth as The Wonder Institute's team and I put it together. The Wonder Institute will also be an invaluable tool for promoting the book by inviting followers to special readings and lectures about the book.
I am accustomed to challenging myself. I am a tough critic of my work. That is an asset as well as a potential risk. I am a risk-taker. Perfection is elusive, and yet I strive for it. I do not delude myself by thinking that perfection or near perfection are easy achievements. Problem-solving is an area that I embrace, knowing that it leads to the best results. I know that it is essential to address all of these aspects with intelligence and integrity. I have the energy and willingness to keep working, to start over, to hold the desired goal in mind while resolving to appreciate and concentrate on the steps that lead to that goal.
I close with a personal favorite quote of mine from James Joyce's Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man:
"Welcome, O Life! I go to encounter for the millionth time the reality of experience and to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race."Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
