No.9 was born of many things. One idea of starting No. 9 stems from a childhood memory . As a child my mom would take me shopping with her,downtown Brooklyn. From Marcy Projects, we would take the “G” train to Hoyt & Schermerhorn, going up the stairs and walking through a store called Woolworth’s.
Although this place looked old (even by 70’s standards) they served the most delicious smelling hamburgers. While my mom and I would walk through Woolworth’s and I would always ask for a hamburger”...and she would say “No! I will make you one when we get home"; this meant that I was going to get “her version" of a hamburger. This was some burger meat with green peppers and onions sticking out the sides and on wonder bread. As I walked toward the door to leave Woolworth’s I would tell myself,” go ahead and ask her, what’s the worse that can happen?" At about 30 feet from the door the smell hit me and I blurted out “ma, I want a burger” and to my surprise she said “O.K.” At first I couldn’t believe my ears so I looked at her, and she said O.K....Again! Any other time I would have to break away from her kung-fu grip and run to the lunch counter to get a better smell, but this day was different. I quickly looked around to find two open stools where my mom and I could sit down. I found them and sat where I can see everything. There they were in all of their glistening glory. These were no ordinary hamburgers; they had irregular edges...some had cheese, some didn’t. The smell was awe inspiring and I just knew that “they” did not use wonder bread for their burgers. The man with the white hat commanding the griddle knew what he was doing, the placed these well seared beauties on toasted hamburger buns. The man gave us our hamburgers and fries and we ate them.
Hitting Fast Forward
I love burgers. There is nothing else like the joy my food brings to those who eat it. When they are happy…I’m happy. I worked at various burger chains when I was younger…back when you actually had to know what you were doing on a grill. This led to my frustration on how things are done today. I often thought “If I ever owned a burger joint I would do things the right way.” The only problem was that I had NO idea what the right way was. I just knew what the current fast food chains were doing wasn’t it. I spent the next four years becoming a student of hamburgers, researching old companies, and just asking questions about hamburgers. I’ve spent countless hours pouring over books of old diners and menus from the 40’s and 50’s. I am very fortunate to be able to enlist the input of close friends that were around post WWll as well as my group of extended family and friends that love food as much as I do. I then took to the streets of Ann Arbor and starting selling burgers at U of M football games. This is much like how many of the big boys got started. I found that all of the research and hard work paid off. The locals of Ann Arbor and the students love our burgers. Today, No.9 is starting to take on a life of its own and becoming bigger than me.
About our food
Our burgers are cooked when you order it. We don’t believe in pre-cooked burgers sitting around waiting for you to buy them. We don’t roll like that. We are going with 1/4lb patties grilled and seasoned with our famous grilled diced onions served on a classic bun. Sorry, no burgers served on brioche here, just classic American burgers. Our research is done and we have made a final decision on the fries we will serve.
Burgers are our main stay. We do however have an extended menu. Our menu will include Grilled chicken breast sandwiches as well as Rib-eye cheesesteak hoagies
No.9 will be located on the University of Michigan Central Camps. Where? We will be on the corner of South University and South State street.
We will be a stones throw away from South Quad, West Quad, Law Quad,Michigan Union, inbound and outbound Blue Bus stops...you get the picture.
What this project funds:
The next logical step for us is to not only serve our great food at football games, but during the week as well. To do this, we will need heavy duty, long lasting equipment. The funding will fund the following items:
- New stainless steel cart
- Commercial griddle
- Commercial deep fryer
- Hot water heater
Your support of this project and your will help us meet the minimum monetary goal needed to get on the road and start serviging FLIPPIN GOOD BURGERS on a daily basis. Any additional funds raised above our initial goal of $6,000 is welcomed and greatly appreciated. Any funding above the minimum will go toward the purchase of more equipment equipment to expand our menu as well as fulfilling donor rewards.

Our future goal is to serve our great food from a brick and mortar. We will get there! We’re hoping that successfully running this food cart and building our brand will allow us to do that at some point in the near future. No.9 hamburgers will be offering two Tshirt color options, white with a red logo as well as a black shirt with a white logo. We will make sure to contact all of our supporters to find out color and size to be sent to you.
