"Disregards the rules"
Sure you've heard all that before in the chief's office, in the station's locker room, at one of your misconduct hearings.
The brass doesn't like you because you don't have time for their "procedure" or the so-called "constitutional rights" of the scum you haul into the station.
But you're still on the force. You wanna know why? Because you're a great goddamn cop. That's why. You've got good instincts, you've got good contacts, and even though you've got a beergut and an ulcer, you can still crack skulls and book perps with the best of them.
In three days you'll retire as a sergeant. You knew early on that you'd never be an officer, and you were ok with it--sitting behind a desk is for people who don't have policing in their blood. However, with the changes to the department's pensions, you're looking at a pretty lean retirement.
"What's this?" You scroll through the dispatch that Suzie just dropped on your desk. Your eyes catch a few phrases: "urgent case" ..."Mayor wants this cleaned up"..."Book the perps in 72 hours and you get a promotion."
You straighten your uniform and head towards the Chief's office. Three days to solve one crime? Piece of cake. And a promotion. What could possibly go wrong?

Three Days Until Retirement is a fast-paced one-session tabletop RPG about cops going rogue to solve one last crime. Inspired by classic eighties cinema about cops on the edge, this game uses a unique card-based resolution system that requires strategically balancing investigative work, action and combat.
The game supports one-session or continuous campaign play and has suggestions for making the game as gritty or as gonzo as you want. Gameplay is rich enough to entertain veteran tabletop gamers yet accessible enough for non-gamers to pick up in a few minutes of play.
Three Days contains the full rules for playing the game, character creation, variant rules and a "lazy DM" section that contains a plot generator, NPC generator, scene generator, clue generator and henchman/villain generator, all done with playing cards!
All you need to play are the rules, 2-5 people, some pen and paper, two decks of cards and some tokens!
The game is already written and I have a dayjob. I am running this as a kickstarter so that I can put lots of awesome art in the game book and get it professionally printed. At $3,000 the numbers make sense--I recoup my initial expenses, Nikki does a lot of cool illustration work, someone does editing and layout, then the book goes off to the printers and then gets shipped to your door.
The more money we get, the more art gets included in the book. It's that simple. Here's a few stretch goals:
$4,000--More art! We'll get two additional full page illustrations and two additional half page illustrations.
$5,000--Full on cover bonanza! We'll do a wrap-around full-color cover for the book. It'll be like the Sistene Chapel except better.
$6,000--Fan club kits! Everyone backing at $25 or above will get a special ~fan club~ package that will enable them to show off how cool they are.
$8,000--More art! Also the first issue of supplemental rules (Damn Fine Coffee) in a zine called GOLD TIMEX, yours for free, along with a second coozie!

Risks and challenges
This is the second publishing project I've ever worked on, and the first commercial one. This is also the first full game I've developed. However, to hedge against this I've purposely started the kickstarter very late in the development cycle to eliminate risk to the backers. The rules have been through many draft revisions and the draft final layout is completed. I've playtested it with friends and strangers for months, and the game's beta rules are immediately available for backers at the $10 level and above.
Since the beta rules are done, final playtesting and backer advice will shape the final product in the two months after the kickstarter ends. Nikki is a fantastic, professional artist and I have collaborated with her on several projects before. We've agreed on a fulfillment deadline and we'll provide weekly progress updates after the project funds.
On the handmade zines--layout has begun on these and I have ~'zine making experience~. I can get 'em out the door very quickly. Worst case scenario I will enlist some of my punk friends to help me out and pay them in pizza and beer out of my own pocket.
The largest possible issue comes from my inexperience with the publishing industry. I've sourced numbers from several printers and believe that things will run smoothly once the final product is finished, but you never know.
Fulfillment will be a one-man operation, and that one man is me and I have a full-time job. However I have backed my fair share of Kickstarters and know how frustrating it can be to wait for a delayed project. I'm taking the time to send beta rules links to people individually, which gives me a chance to personally say hello. I am usually in front of a computer so turnaround will normally be quick, there may be times where you have to wait for me to come back from a day trip or wake up or something. Cheers!
The rulebook contains the full rules for the game, including character creation, gameplay, and copious notes for running the game--extra rules about pacing and determining challenge difficulty and a suite of tables to enable quick scenario/location/clue/henchman/NPC generation. You and your game group only need one copy of the rulebook to play the game.
The player's guide, on the other hand, contains only the rules for character creation and for playing the game, along with several copies of the character sheet and a space for notes. The player's guide is non-essential, but useful--your players can look up the rules they need themselves. Plus they're fun "zine" type things so everyone will feel extra cool. The player's guide is not essential for playing the game.
Bump your order by $5 for every copy of the players' guide that you want. I'll send out a survey at the end of the project to get your info.
No, it only includes the PDF of the rules. But you can add $5 to any pledge to get a copy of the player's guide mailed to you!
I've heard some good things about these "electronic books" and such.
Anyone backing at the pdf level will also receive .mobi and .epub versions of the rules, with and without art.
