Minke is an innovative, new multi-tool that allows you to cut fishing lines, thread hooks and tie knots. Effortlessly.
Angling is one of the most popular recreational activities worldwide, however threading a fine line through the eye of a small hook can be difficult, even for experienced anglers. Add in bad weather or low light and this makes things even more difficult. Minke is about removing this frustration and allowing you to get on with what you enjoy.
When designing Minke, we have carefully researched and tested every aspect of the tool: from how you hold and manipulate it in your hands, to how you insert a hook, thread a small eyelet and then tie the perfect clinch knot.
At Meso we believe in a holistic approach to design. This is why Minke has been through an in-depth product development process of design reviews, prototypes, focus groups and user testing. It was this process that identified the clinch knot as one of the most common and trusted knots used in coarse and fly fishing and it's the knot Minke is designed to tie.
At Meso we have an experienced team of designers and engineers, who spotted potential in a great university project, and wanted to help bring it to market. The evolution of Minke from that first concept model, to the polished design we have now has been an in-depth and involved experience for all of us. This is due to numerous iterations of the design, to ensure we were delivering the best possible solution.
We have also carefully refined the dimensions and tolerances of the rubber head so that it can hold a range of eyelet hooks commonly used: size 8 to size 16.
Minke is about making things simpler and that is why we have integrated a set of hollow ground, sprung stainless steel clippers as well as an eyelet cleaning needle. Due to Minke's ergonomic design, you can flick the tool around your finger to use all of the different features without having to find and swap tools. You can also use the slot in the back of the tool to attach Minke to your vest for ease of accessibility.
- Flexible rubber head holds eyelet hooks for fresh water fly-fishing sizes 8 - 16
- Funnel feeds the line straight through the eye of the hook
- Optimum function with lines with diameters between 0.16mm - 0.37mm or 0.0062in - 0.014in (up to 15lb line)
- Patent pending design makes tying a clinch knot effortless
- Integrated sprung stainless steel clippers allow you to trim the line
- Eyelet cleaning needle integrated into clippers
- Lanyard loop to keep your Minke safe
- Delivered in a tin which you can use to store hooks and lures
How it works
Production plan & Background
The initial concept for Minke came from a university final-year design project from Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow University, which originally set out solve the problem of tying knots when conditions are wet, cold and windy. Meso developed and refined this idea into the product you see today; a multi-tool which features not only the original knot tying capability, but other handy functions, all packaged into a product we believe looks fantastic.
The ergonomics of the product were carefully considered as well as ensuring the reliability and performance of the product. Minke's design is based around the enjoyment of holding and handling the tool as much as it's about ensuring the quality with which it works.
Jayshree Mitchell, Project Manager at Meso Design explains "We have applied this attention to detail at every stage of the project and this continues through to manufacture. Already, we have had fantastic response from our social media campaign building up to our Kickstarter launch."
Meso Design are used to delivering cutting edge products and work closely with reliable and trusted manufacturers to achieve this. We have already made a prototype tool, with our chosen final manufacturer, so we know that Minke can be manufactured to the required tolerances and the prototypes have had a great reception from all of our beta testers.
So what's next? Our prototype tool can only produce a very small number of units, so we'll be investing in a full injection mould tool for the body of Minke. We'll also be using an overmoulded tool to achieve a perfect fit on the rubber head parts - which we're limited to glueing on our prototypes. The tools you're backing will help us set up are capable of running tens of thousands of units, so we have total confidence we can deliver in volume to all our backers. Our designers make regular visits to oversee production of all our products, so we can ensure the integrity of the design. This also means we have a great, and ongoing relationship with our manufacturing partner for Minke. They are used to delivering large volume orders for well known brands, so we are confident they can deliver Minke to spec and on time to all our backers.
In 2012 Minke won a Red Dot Concept Design Award, however we need your help to raise the funds required to set-up tooling for mass manufacture. With your help we can transform a great concept into a fantastic product.
Minke is Design Protected in the EU and US, and Design Protection Pending in Japan.
Minke also has International Patent Pending.

Risks and challenges
Minke has been developed by product design firm Meso Design. Meso has over 5 years experience of delivering high quality products for clients across the sectors: from fast moving consumer goods to medical; transport to financial. As well as this, Meso has also been the design house behind three successful Kickstarter campaigns launched by our clients: Popa, Projecteo and Belt Mistletoe.
Minke is our first internal project that we are looking to launch and as such, we have put all of our expert knowledge into its design and development, not to mention project planning.
SO WHAT ARE THE RISKS?
Our experience has taught us that every project has a risk associated, however we have carefully planned to minimise these.
MANUFACTURING - Meso has long standing relationships with manufacturing partners who are used to delivering high-quality products for us. This means we have minimised the risk associated with forging new relationships as Minke will be manufactured by one of our trusted and vetted companies.
PRODUCTION - Minke has been through a series of prototype iterations to iron out any problems that might occur during manufacture. We have been working closely with the manufacturer to optimise the design for injection moulding and we even made a prototype tool to get as close to the final part as possible and reduce the risk associated with tooling.
DELIVERY - Our shipping estimates are realistic and based on accurate lead times. However there is always a risk that an unexpected event can cause a knock on effect and push back the delivery date. We've added in a buffer to hopefully account for this if it does happen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
