It’s hard to believe that SPACE INVADERS entered the world’s arcades in June 1978 and turned forty in 2018! During this time, the game and its brand have become part of modern culture. Its characters have become design icons in their own right and have permeated not only the world of video games, but also the worlds of art and fashion. As long time fans of tabletop games and electronic games alike, we were astounded that, during all this time, nobody had yet developed a genuine SPACE INVADERS board game. We plan to change this now with your help: We are incredibly excited to announce our crowdfunding campaign for...

Our primary goal is to create a fantastic board game experience while remaining true to the original game’s visual presentation and atmosphere. SPACE INVADERS - THE BOARD GAME is a combination of a deck-building card game with a measured dose of board game strategy mixed in.
In SPACE INVADERS - THE BOARD GAME, 2-4 players defend their moon base against the SPACE INVADERS by moving their cannons across the game board in order to gather intelligence about the enemy above them. Destroying SPACE INVADERS provides powerful cards that are then added to the players' hands. Gathered intel may be used for targeted research to further enhance the player deck capabilities. The game is driven by a total of 242 Action Cards, energy cards and researchable technologies.
While the invaders are the shared enemy, SPACE INVADERS - THE BOARD GAME is a competitive game of survival. Like in the original arcade game, each player ultimately fights for their own HI-SCORE.
40th Anniversary Emblem
We are equally excited that TAITO is allowing us to create some of the last products to use the exclusive SPACE INVADERS 40th Anniversary Emblem, which all backer rewards available during this campaign will carry.
After June 15th of this year, we will no longer be able to continue to offer these unique game editions anywhere. We think that SPACE INVADERS - THE BOARD GAME will not only entertain you as the great game we feel it is, but the game and our other exclusive backer rewards are sure to become instant collector's items.
Stretch Goals & More!
The final rulebook PDFs will be available for download in 6 languages shortly after the campaign ends.
A digital do-it-yourself version of the game will be available to all backers for download shortly after the campaign ends to shorten the time until the production units arrive. This is an evolution of the materials we used to produce our own prototypes (see below) incl. templates to make your own SPACE INVADERS style game pieces.
4 carefully balanced additional Invader cards are added to the mid-game.
The 3D lenticular lens panel has a self adhesive back and is the same size as the presentation box - you can use it as an alternate cover, stick on your wall or use it any other way you please! Real 3D effect - no glasses required.
We will reveal additional stretch goals and further information as the campaign progresses - please check back in frequently!
How Does It PLAY?
Before the game begins, all 5 rows of SPACE INVADERS cards are shuffled individually and then placed face down onto the game board, hiding salvageable technology that is later unveiled during gameplay to continually improves the players' card decks.
Bunker elements are placed onto the bunker locations and "Extra Life" tokens are handed to the players. The number of tokens and bunker elements is determined by the number of participating players to ensure a balanced experience.
Players start with an identical deck of cards and draw a starting hand of 5 random cards that provides them with energy and actions. As the game progresses, each player tries to improve their deck in order to increase the number and the power of their available actions, a higher energy output, and ultimately a higher SCORE. When one of the GAME OVER conditions is met - for example, if a player manages to shoot the UFO - the player with the HI-SCORE wins.
The game is structured in turns and each player's turn consists of four phases:
III. Energy Transform
Phase I - Research
The first research phase starts with an optional scan of the area above the player's cannon. Scans defuse booby traps hidden by some Invaders - but only for the scanning player, and only during the current turn! Scans also award the player with "Alien Intel" tokens that may be used to research new technologies during the research phase.
Phase II - Action
During the action phase, the active player plays one or more Action Cards from their current hand. Action Cards may allow the player to play and draw additional cards, boost their energy output and gain more transforms - as well as scans and movement for their cannons or the UFO. Action Cards also have many other unique abilities that allow the players to manipulate their own or other players' hands and card decks.
Phase III - Transform
During the transform phase, the active player can transform their current energy output (usually once unless additional transforms were gained during Phase II) in order to either shoot the SPACE INVADERS above their cannon position, or invest in one of the available additional Action Cards or Energy Resources that get added to their decks for use in one of their following turns. The remains of destroyed SPACE INVADERS also provide new technologies and get added to the player’s deck. Shooting at SPACE INVADERS also attracts enemy fire from the SPACE INVADER columns to the left and right of the firing player - potentially causing damage to Bunkers or other players.
Phase IV - Cleanup
During the cleanup phase, any cards remaining in the player's hand are placed on top of their discard pile and five new cards are drawn from their draw pile (if necessary, the discard pile gets shuffled to become the new draw pile). Finally, the current player signals the end of the turn by moving the UFO one slot to the right.
All of the cards and tokens the players hold at the end of the game carry a score value. The player who has the highest total score wins the game.
In SPACE INVADERS - THE BOARD GAME, the players’ cannon position on the game board affects the cards and corresponding upgrades that are available. Not all card types are available at all times. To win, it is important to use a mix of scanning, research, and enemy attacks to acquire the components to build a winning deck.

A brief history of SPACE INVADERS
Created by Tomohiro Nishikado, the original arcade game was released in 1978.
SPACE INVADERS was manufactured and sold by TAITO in Japan and licensed to Midway in the US. It is one of the earliest examples of a shooting game.
For the game mechanism, Designer Nishikado drew inspiration from the earlier game Breakout. To complete it, Nishikado designed the game characters and programmed everything by himself, using development tools that he created from scratch. Today the game is considered to have been a key factor in driving the games business from a novelty to a global industry.
The game has been the inspiration for many other video games, re-released on numerous platforms, and led to several sequels. The Atari 2600 version, released in 1980, is widely believed to have quadrupled the system's sales and is remembered as the first ever ‘killer app’ for a videogame console.
SPACE INVADERS has been referenced and parodied in multiple television shows and movies, and has even been added to MoMA‘s Architecture and Design collection. The CRAB invader has become a pop culture icon, often representing the video game industry as a whole.
Why do you need to raise funds, isn't SPACE INVADERS big enough to be made without this campaign?
While SPACE INVADERS is a popular brand, we have licensed it from the creators at TAITO. We are lucky that TAITO supports the creation of the game, but we ourselves are just a small company and do not have the means to produce the game or any of the other rewards in relevant numbers without raising capital through this campaign.

* Production delays
* Shipping and customs related delays
All announced delivery dates are estimates. While we are doing everything we can to manage these risks, due to these production risks and the logistics of international shipping, backers may receive their rewards at different times, depending on location and exact reward items selected.
