Ten gardens. Ten original plays. Two neighborhoods. Two weekends.
We chose ten gardens, six uptown and four downtown,and assigned a playwright to each. The playwrights then wrote twenty-minute pieces inspired by their garden, and the plays will be presented over two weekends in September - the uptown gardens from September 21-23, the downtown from September 28-30.
Audience members will be given maps and recommendations for places to eat and hang out as they go from garden to garden. Picture a pub crawl. But with community gardens and theater.
The goal is to make theater that relates not only to the architecture of the performance spaces, but to the communities they inhabit. This isn't theater that you "go to" - this is theater as public art. It's about New Yorkers getting to know their city and seeing it in a completely new way.
The festival is free. It is important to us to keep the work universally accessible. Donations collected during the performances will be split among the gardens.
Meanwhile, the artists we know and love have donated their time and talent to this project. And while we won't be able to pay them, we do hope that we can cover any costs that might arise – marketing materials, an unattainable prop, scripts - so that the actors, directors, and playwrights won't have to spend their own money to make the work.
This is where you come in. Help us make viable, sustainable theater; theater that is community-oriented and produced in non-traditional venues, and is available to everyone. Help us plant urban roots.
