The Thread: A 10-Part Documentary Web Series

AU$ 12,948

105

The Thread will be a 10-part documentary web series published on YouTube from June-September 2017.

Two mates sit down with 10 iconic Australians to figure out how they broke away from the pack. Jack and Hugh seek out leaders of wide-ranging fields: adventure, sport, business, philanthropy, medicine, law and literature to uncover the common thread that binds them.

The interview subjects are household names famed for remarkable and well-told stories, but rarely have they been asked how they did it, how they define success and whether anyone can do what they've done.

Armed with meticulous research and uncomfortably simple questions, we elicit intriguing, inspiring and often unexpected insights from an eclectic bunch of trailblazers.

Gerry Harvey: The Retail King of Australia
Germaine Greer: The High Priestess of Feminism
Alan Bond: The High-Flying Entrepreneur
Simon McKeon AO: The Born-Again Banker
Gai Waterhouse: Australia's First Lady of Horse Racing
Jess Watson OAM: The Youngest Solo Sailer of the World
Alby Mangels: The Legendary Adventure Documentary-Maker
Dr. Fiona Wood AM: Australia's Most Trusted Plastic Surgeon
The Hon. Michael Kirby AC: The Great Dissenting High Court Judge
Pat Rafter: The Former World #1 Tennis Champion

We've done the hard yards by shooting these 10 interviews but now we want to turn them into 10 compelling documentary episodes. To do that, we will be working with a professional editing company to bring the whole series together, ready to publish on YouTube in late June.

Be a part of our story!

Jack and Hugh met while studying at Bond University on the Gold Coast. Hugh studied business, majoring in entrepreneurship. Jack studied law and journalism.

While at university, we worked together on organising an on-campus festival called Bondstock. Two of the events during the festival saw guest speakers Sir James Gobbo AC and Andrew Forrest AO present to the students. Embarrassingly, we only had 17 and 44 students attend these two events in empty lecture theatres. Even though their speeches were inspiring, we figured there must be a better way share the thoughts and advice of Australians who have made a name for themselves. Enter The Thread.

Risks and challenges

This documentary has sat on our hard drives for far too long. It's time to share it with the world but we need your help to make this happen.

Jack and I are complete novice documentary-makers. Our passion has got us this far but now we need some proper editing skills to take the project over the finish line.

We ARE publishing this web series one way or another! Thank you for your support.

Alan Bond was one of Australia's most polarising entrepreneurs. He was the first non-American to win the Amercia's Cup in 1983 and founded his own university, but he also spent time in prison for insider trading and fraud. Bond died in 2015 shortly after we interviewed him. He signed a few photos for us of him holding up the America's Cup - we think they're special and can't wait for them to find a good home.
