Gameplay in Grand Guilds is comprised of two main aspects - the combat and the overworld. The combat pits you against AI enemies in a tactical grid map, while the overworld let's you manage your characters, party, and quests.
Grand Guilds offers a unique combat experience through a skill card system. It's a Tactical RPG meets Card Game where you move your units in a grid-based map but on top of that, your skills are in the form of cards.
Each character in your party starts with a set amount of cards and they draw 1 skill card per turn. Each skill costs action points which build up every turn, until a maximum of 5. The stronger the effects, the more action points it costs.
Apart from cards you draw, you will also have a Basic Ability which is always available once per turn at the cost of 2 AP. This way, your heroes will never run out of moves even if they draw bad cards.
Movement also costs 1 AP so you'll have to be aware of your position and your enemy's location.
Characters acquire more cards as they progress. There are 3 main types of cards which you can distinguish by their color.
- Physical - cards that are affected by the character's STR attribute and deal physical damage. Effects can be reduced by Armor.
- Magical - cards that draw from the INT attribute and deal magical damage. Effects can be reduced by Resistance.
- Utility - cards that do not deal any damage but instead perform various effects such as heals, stun, teleport, taunt, etc.
Physical and Magical cards can also have additional effects like stuns, heals, etc. so they're not just for damaging enemies.
The world map is where you will be able to advance the main story and take on quests throughout Irin. Your crew will travel around the map using a flying ship named Mami. While in the air, there is a chance that you will encounter dynamic events which may yield various rewards.
Your characters gain experience for every successful encounter. Each level up will grant you stat points to progress your characters. Want a healer who can tank? Give them more vitality. Need your tank to deal more damage? Pump in more strength or intelligence.
You can also build powerful decks to compliment their stats and your play-style. Unlock more abilities using skill points which characters acquire when they progress.
The story takes place in the continent of Irin, a war-torn realm currently under the rule of the Triton Empire. The world is currently at a period of peace; however, recent events have shown what a fragile thing peace can be. Only the guilds, independent organisations of remarkable people, keep the realm from tipping into chaos.
Throughout the game's story, you will encounter various characters with their own unique personalities and looks. There are currently 9 playable characters in the game. Here are the first 3 heroes that you will have in your party.
The main story is told through a series of thoughtfully written dialogues and cutscenes using a visual novel-like system similar to Fire Emblem. Each character has partial voice acting at the beginning of their lines to denote emotion and mood.

We've been self-funding Grand Guilds for more than 1.5 years now. While most of us are working on this game full-time, we occasionally take on part-time and freelance work to help sustain development. This of course takes time away from making Grand Guilds.
That's why we're here on Kickstarter! With your support, we don't have to take freelance jobs to fund our final stretch of development. All our time and resources will be poured into finishing Grand Guilds, which will greatly speed up development.
Kickstarter is also a great way to communicate with our players as the development goes on. Your feedback and input is important to making sure that Grand Guilds reaches its full potential!
This budget breakdown is for Kickstarter only. We still have some other funds from outside sources. We can still finish the game without this campaign.
Artwork (40%) - a huge chunk of the funding will go to making our art assets as gorgeous as possible. This includes everything from character portraits, to 3D models, and even the UI.
Voice Acting (25%) - since the game is partially voiced, we'll need to pay talented voice actors and actresses to bring our characters to life.
Music & Sounds (10%) - the game features its own original soundtrack and there's still a bunch of tracks for Eduardo to compose. We'll also need to produce some very specific sound effects for the game.
Taxes and Fees (25%) - we'll need to pay taxes to the government, Kickstarter fees, and transfer fees.
What about programming, writing, marketing, QA, etc.?
We still have some of our own funds left to pay for these other things. The breakdown above is just for the money from this Kickstarter campaign.
Risks and challenges
For the past year, we've been developing Grand Guilds with our own funding and time. Although most of the game is at a playable level, we still have a long way to go in terms of completion. A lot of content, assets, playtesting, bug fixing, and the like still need to be done.
Despite all the challenges and uncertainties ahead, we are confident that we would be able to deliver a full game in the end. Our project lead has years of experience in developing and releasing indie titles, while as a team we have successfully released a full game in the past.
Rest assured, we will do everything in our power to complete this project and deliver an amazing game for everyone to enjoy.
