An old "piragua" cart is being transformed into an urban tool for a more creative use of public space.

THE DESCRIPTION IS IN ENGLISH HERE AND IN SPANISH BELOW:

FELLOW CITIZENS OF COMMON SPACE
Urban interventions with ambulant tools.

(roughly translated from Spanish)
"Public space is a way of referring ourselves to the collective spaces of an urban thread, open settings and accesible without exceptions." "The Administration, that understands the public as that which belongs to it, can find inappropriate certain uses that are not adequate to its expectations of what should be the public stage by excellence." Apropiaciones Inapropiadas, Manuel Delgado)

FELLOW CITIZENS OF COMMON SPACE seeks to explore the paradox of 'public' space. All the interventions are urban tools that will facilitate communication and learning in a space commonly limited to consumption and transit, and activate different problematics, behaviors, contradictions and scenarios that make common space 'public'. Part of the problem at the present moment is a lack of discussion or even understanding of what is "public" and a lack of tools that if present, would allow one to remain in the street longer, foster diverse uses of the city, and activate a creative and dynamic public stage. Examples? In the 'plazas' the only tables available come with the price of consuming, the city maps are purely touristic and only show the jewelry and souvenir stores, residents have no 'notice boards' or ways to express themselves or to others in common space, there are many beautiful open air places to be, abandoned streetscapes, cyclists, and creative individuals and groups that would enjoy and use urban interventions that improve activity in the city.

The first intervention for this proyect (and the one I need some funding for) is the adoption of an old "piragua" cart I have turned into an ambulant tool for the creative street scene. The cart would like to activate open air spaces as a way of celebrating common space. It is a proyect in process, constantly evolving in its uses, the tools it carries (its contents), its users, and its location within the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico. I need to raise money to be able to continue its construction and remodelling. Here a few things Ive done so far followed by the things I still need to work on.

So far:
*the cart was purchased.
*a custom-made picnic blanket was made for the cart that rolls up and helps to turn any streetscape into a place to sit, relax.
*I have given it the first paint job, a grey primer, and sanded off the layers of oil paint it originally had.
* I replaced a flat tire.
*I have added on a toolbox that includes a few supplies for the cart and its users (hammer, screwdriver, some paint, pencils and pens, paper, a guillotine for cutting zines, some books, a harmonica).
*it has a sink for putting in refreshments.
*copies of zines from all over, essays on the city and public space, and the bibliography of the investigation I've been working on for this proyect.
*battery operated LED lights for reading or night...

THINGS I NEED AT THE MOMENT(THIS IS WHERE I NEED THE HELP!):
*Paint (more grey and also blue exterior paint) and some more brushes. 2 gallons
*a setup to hook up to a bike. the cart is currently being pushed manually and would be much more user and street friendly if it could be transported via a bike.
*the bike!
*wood, not too much, but the scraps I have aren't cutting it. There are some parts of the cart that need to be replaced with new wood, and there are some elements I wish to add to it as well.
*a lock and key for the storage.
*some hinges for a fold-out table and window I want to build in.
*a typewriter (manual) for those who wish to write, post, etc while at the cart.
*some Wood filler.
*a bit of money to print out more zines, booklets, etc. (I need the toner for the printer).
*ambulant cart permit for San Juan
(THIS LIST CAN GO ON AND ON, ANY EXTRA FUNDS WILL HELP CONTINUE AND MAINTAIN THE PROJECT!!! )

THE FUNDS WILL BE USED TO BUY MATERIALS STILL NEEDED, MAINTAIN A SMALL LIBRARY OF TEXT ON 'PUBLIC' SPACE AND ZINES ACCESSIBLE TO ALL, TO BUY PAINT, TOOLS, GET PERMITS IF NEEDED, MORE WOOD, ETC... in exchange I am giving hand-made drawings of some past projects of mine, a booklet of the project, and more! I thank everyone for their support.
