Introducing the Ovision underwater housing for iPhone
Hi Kickstarters, thank you for checking out our project! We've been working on this project for over a year now and we are ready to show it to the world.
We are proud to introduce you to our new product, the Ovision iPhone underwater housing. I know you might think that this is probably ‘’another iPhone housing’’ but it isn’t. Our housing is professional-grade, ergonomic and comes with our custom Ovision application which enhances user-experience.
In fact, we are currently at our 3rd version of this housing, which is now with a sleeker design and more functionalities. This unique product will let you bring your iPhone to new depths. It has been designed to transform your iPhone into an underwater video/photo camera. Take it with you while you are snorkeling, diving or when you are in any harsh environment.
We designed and manufactured a user-friendly and ergonomic system based on the undeniable high definition of the iPhone’s camera. This housing can accommodate the amateur as well as the professional scuba diver wishing to share their underwater passion.
The rubber cushion and bumper will hold in place and accommodate the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 and the new iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. The mechanical buttons will let you use the main functions of the photo/video camera of your iPhone with our custom application.
The housing has been tested to a depth up to 91.4m/ 300ft in a pressure tank but can surely go further.
DUAL LOCKING LATCHES FOR MORE SAFETY : To prevent accidentally opening of your housing while diving or snorkeling, we designed it with two locking latches. To open the housing, simply open both latches and pull the cap off.
''BULLETPROOF'' : The Ovision housing is made with marine grade aluminum, stainless steel and optical clear acrylic.
USER-FRIENDLY DESIGN : The Ovision housing lets you use your camera in video and photo mode with our custom application. The mechanical buttons lets you switch from video to photo, photo to video and even lets you view your shots as you go along.
EASY SET-UP : The unique design of this iPhone housing lets you safely use your iPhone underwater in seconds. Simply open the cap by opening both safety latches, slide your iPhone in and replace the cap. That’s it, you’re now set and ready to enjoy.
FLAT LENS FOR BEST IMAGE : The optical grade acrylic flat lens is optimal for best image quality and good focussing. Compared to glass lenses, acrylic can be repaired by polishing so you don’t have to worry about changing your lens.
Design remodeling (January 2014)
During the campaign, we managed to modify the design of the housing so it would become even more complete. Here are the specs which will be included in the Ovision housing :
- 2x 1/4-20 mounting holes on the bottom (for tripod)
- 1x 1/4-20 mounting hole on the top (for video light)
- 1x 1/4-20 mounting hole on the left side (for tripod in portrait orientation)
- 2x 8-32 mountings holes on left side (for leash attachment as an accessory soon or for dual grip)
- 2x 8-32 mounting holes on the right side (for grip mounting)
- 1x 1/4-20 mounting hole on the grip bracket (for video light)
Our custom application
The Ovision application gives you a much better experience while you use your Ovision underwater housing. The application let you switch between video and photo modes and also review your shots within the playback mode. You can also enter sleep mode and save battery life by pressing any button for 3 seconds. Our application is fully functionnal and we're currently waiting for approval from Apple to be on their App store. We just got approval by Apple and the app is now available on the App store. You can download it here.
This product has unlimited possibilities
The best camera is the camera you have with you at all times, even more so with the social media craze. Not only everyone knows what we are doing but with an iPhone in our pocket, we are able to share what we are currently seeing. Imagine going to the pool, the beach, on a snorkeling or scuba diving trip and, by taking your iPhone along with you, take underwater pictures of friends and marine life and share them on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Our housings give you the possibilities to share magical moments with your friends and make everyone jealous.
Where we're at
We've been working on this project for a year now. The housings you see in our video are working prototypes. The product has been tested through hundred of dives and yet hasn't showed significant issues. In fact, we already produced a few of these underwater housings for local scuba divers but we would like to increase our production which would make it affordable to a larger broad of customers. We managed, during the last few months, to continually improve and update our housing with the comments we received from our users.
We started designing this housing on December 2012. Since then, we've made a lot of changes to the original housing we kept the simple curves of it. A little before the end of 2012, we found a good manufacturer for our machined parts and ordered 5 prototypes.
We received our first housings ever in January 2013. We've assembled them all without any problems and tested these in a pressure tank and they leaked at 160 feet pressure. We redesigned the main window and the locking system to what we currently have. We received our second shot prototypes on April 2013 and they were way better. We managed to test these prototypes to 300 feet pressure in a pressure tank without any leak. The compression latches we have right now were added with this revision as well. Later on, we had some beta users having some sensitivity issues with the iPhone's touchscreen using our mechanical press buttons. We redesigned the main window again and improved our contact system that send the signal to the touchscreen. On July 2013, we received the 3rd revision of the Ovision housing. It's the same model as seen in our video and is a fully working and tested prototype.
The main goal of our Kickstarter campaign is to reduce the cost of producing these housings so we can lower its price and at the same time, we can get the financial resources we need to develop accessories for our products.

Testimonials of our users
''I love the Ovision housing because of its really narrow size and ease of use. I had a problem with turning the camera off by pushing the home button but that was my own fault because I did not placed the camera application in the bottom menu of the iphone now it works great and I even switch camera Apps from a macro camera to my favorite video or photo camera App. The fact that this housing is so small and has such a deep depth rating makes it a great housing for tech diving. I can put it in my dry suit pocket and forget about it until I need it and then pull it out and use it with my canister dive light. This summer, it has been doubling as a family camera to take shots of my baby daughter learning how to swim. Ovision have very good communication. If I needed any thing they responded fast and did their best to help me with anything. Like I wanted some spare orings and they got them straight out to me. I like the GoPro but I find that being able to just use my iPhone is so easy and being able to have different cameras App's all right there with me is great and it's so much more compact and thin with camera and screen all already in the iPhone. I think Ovision have done a great job with this small housing and I am looking forward to their next products!''

How to use the Ovision housing
Risks and challenges
Even if we already assembled and tested many housings, there are some factors that we can't control. The lead time of our machined parts is definately our longest waiting period. We usually ask our manufacturer to send housings in small batches so we can assemble some while others are being machined. During the last year, we have carefully selected our manufacturer for machined parts and our hardware supplier. We already received and checked all the parts we need to assemble our housings from our suppliers and made sure they are conform.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
