I'm EVAN HAYWOOD -- a musician from Ann Arbor, Michigan. This is the Kickstarter campaign to fund the release of "Perfumed Gardens"-- my second LP as a solo artist. After several months of communicating with record labels, I have decided to release it independently. This will allow me to work with complete creative freedom to craft a limited edition 180 Gram LP and other art objects to my own specifications. This album is the result of four years of songwriting and performing, hundreds of hours of studio time-- and significant debt on my credit card! It is my most ambitious project to date. (In 2016, I successfully released my debut LP, *RAMSHACKLES* via Kickstarter: https://goo.gl/YBjRbw)
For this "Perfumed Gardens" LP to exist, I need your help with the funding! In return, I will personally ship a beautiful vinyl album to your doorstep. Other rewards include: CD Digipaks, Screen-Printed T-Shirts, Signed 11'X17' Promo Posters, Canvas Art Prints, Handwritten Lyrics, Personal Thank-You Letters, Black Ram Buttons, and Signed Test Pressings (ed. of 10). The painstakingly detailed production of these limited edition art objects will be overseen by yours truly, EVAN HAYWOOD... utilizing the highest quality materials and methods available, in collaboration with a diverse community of artists! Over 30 people have contributed to this project, including: singers, instrumentalists, poets, producers, engineers, photographers, painters, graphic designers, calligraphers, and filmmakers.
RECORDING AND MIXING
In the Summer of 2016, I brought my live band into the 'B Room' at Backseat Productions in Ann Arbor, MI. Over the course of three days, we recorded 23 songs, with my good friend Fred Thomas on engineering duties. These sessions formed the foundations of two full-length albums-- "Perfumed Gardens" and "Wavecasting". Along with my first solo LP, "Ramshackles" (2016), they will complete the Black Ram Trilogy. I decided to focus on finishing "Perfumed Gardens"... the second album in this progression.
Following the initial sessions, I spent six months recording additional instrumentation at The Grapevine-- my now-defunct studio at the Russell Industrial Center in Detroit, MI. I called in over 20 amazing musicians to fill out the songs. In addition to the traditional sounds of a rock n' roll band, I added instruments such as: carillon, pipe organ, tabla, vibraphone, mandolin, flute, glockenspiel, pedal steel, and a string quartet. I also got some killer background vocals from superstars like Antwaun Stanley and Madelyn Grant. All of these sonic textures swirled together to form a baroque, psychedelic palette of sound.
After the arrangements were finally completed, I brought the results to Grammy Award-winning producer David Feeny at the Tempermill in Ferndale, MI. Dave is a top-notch engineer, who has worked with many great musicians... notably, Jack White and Loretta Lynn. We utilized a variety of analog equipment, carefully crafting each mix and recording straight to a vintage MCI JH24 2" tape machine-- the same kind used on countless 1960s/70s classics by artists like Led Zeppelin, Queen, Fleetwood Mac, and The Rolling Stones. After many grueling sessions, we finished the mixing & mastering... with a little extra sauce from world-class audio engineers Chris Koltay and Dave Schall.
The front cover of the "Perfumed Gardens" LP is an oil painting by acclaimed German fantasy artist Michael Hutter. The back cover is another oil painting~ by Detroit-based heavy hitter Quinn Faylor. Multimedia icon Shingy Pop contributed an original ram skull design for the t-shirts. Brennan Greaves threw down a unique illustration for the limited ed. art prints. Sasaki Ruriko and Barnaby Root provided Japanese and Old English calligraphy. Elyssa Eve, Miles Larson, and Bill McClelland flexed their talents in the field of photography.
"Perfumed Gardens" is a multi-genre psychedelic concept album, inspired by obscure compilations of 1960s garage rock. Its hazy explorations of flower-power nostalgia traverse the sounds of chamber pop, Motown, girl groups, cowboy gospel, soulful R&B, country rock, library music, mystical freak folk, backwoods bluegrass, fuzzy noise-pop, outsider occultism, and private press singer-songwriters. Sonically, this LP is an eclectic & opulent gem... soaked in Owsley acid and basking in beautiful contradictions.
Many of the lyrics on "Perfumed Gardens" address our current climate of political injustice in the United States... including tragedies in Standing Rock, Baltimore, and Flint, MI. Spoken-word segments by Detroit poet Terrell Morrow and UM ethnographer Sylvia Simioni address these issues in depth. Making this album was a way for me to cope with the immense amount of suffering being perpetrated upon the American people by corrupt politicians and corporations. In this particularly traumatic time in U.S. history, these songs are a humble attempt to honestly express my thoughts and feelings in a creative and constructive way.
I offer this music to all of you with every ounce of love in my heart! I feel this "Perfumed Gardens" album is a unique and personal work of art that will continue to reveal its worth long after I am dead and gone. I put a little piece of my soul in every package I send out.
Thanks and much love!!! <3 <3 <3
