Summertime wants us all to be mercurial, and the best day of summer is almost never planned. However, we all know that Seattle summer is a tricky bitch that needs to be cornered. When summer begins, we are all dumb sleepy bears who are irked by the pressure of sunshine and struggle to move quickly enough to capitalize; then as soon as we hit our stride, the lights go out again and we all go back to being caustic mudpeople. Summer demands action, and summer deserves a coronation line.
MELLOW YELLOW: A Summertime Art Party is coming to Seven Hills Park on 6/9.
There will be an outdoor exhibition of new paintings by Spencer Moody, who moved to LA earlier in the year in part because the darkness here was crushing him and he wanted to set up an easel in his backyard. Darryl Ary will be on hand, selling t shirts. Corey Brewer will be offering his musical fortune telling service. Gold Van Records will be parked under the cherry trees on 16th avenue. Shannon Perry is threatening stick n poke tattoos. Carlos Ruiz will be doing portraits. Lelah Maupin, Tyler Bosch, Dan Paulus, Dre Gordon, Brittany Kusa, Grant Rehnberg and Shawn Dowds are all making things too.
If these artists want to sell the things they make, they'll do that on their own time in their own way and Mellow Yellow does not have anything to do with the commerce. Mellow Yellow has more to do with hula hooping, flirting even though you have a boyfriend, and the smell of fireworks. Other things that might happen include: tarot cards, a pinata, a magician, nail painting, dog petting, people dressed as food, a clothing swap, a taco truck, a congo line, and the beginning of your summer fling. You might find art that gives you feelings. You might dance. You might get a haircut.
This is what the money is for: I need a $250 park permit and insurance so "the man" doesn't harsh our Mellow Yellow. I want to spend $50 on some paint for Darryl. I want to make a giant sign that says Mellow Yellow and I don't want to think about the fact that I'm unemployed as I'm standing in the glitter aisle. I want to display Spencer's paintings in a classy way. I want complimentary sparklers after nightfall, and not the metal kind but the kind that are wrapped in colored paper. I don't want to rule out a dunk tank.
Do you want this to happen? Oh wait, you don't? Then get out of my life, because you sound terrible.
Oh you do? Then let's do this. If you want to make art or provide a creative service, if you have ideas or skills or time or money, talk to me: email@example.com. WHO IS GOING TO MAKE A PINATA?
