The Sisterhood of Blood - Vol I captures the pivotal moments in the lives of 12 female vampires as they stalk the dark streets of Victorian London. Times are difficult, a fact that is only amplified by their lust for blood and struggle to remain in the shadows.
Each chapter reveals a new vampire and the turning point in her existence. Some embrace their unnatural lifestyle, others are haunted by the memories of their humanity, but all of them have a connected story to tell.
Each chapter introduces you to a different character and a pivotal moment in their existence. Every vampire is different and driven by their individual motives that have pushed them to be who they are.
The backdrop for these beautiful monsters is Victorian London and their tales collectively span the years from 1851 to 1887, with each short story intertwining with another, revealing more about the characters and the secrets of the Sisterhood.
I find this time in London’s history extremely engrossing and I’ve attempted to keep it as accurate as I can while sneaking in some interesting facts from the Victorian era. I hope this will ground the stories more and provide a captivating read.
I’ve tried to step away from the romanticised vision of vampire storytelling and focused more on the human side that I believe would still exist within them. It’s been a lot of fun allowing some to ignore the voice that tells them they are evil and fascinating to see what happens when an eternal life is weighed down by human guilt.
I plan to self publish the Sisterhood of Blood as a small print run of first editions and hopefully use this as a springboard to a publishing house.
The Sisterhood of Blood originally started here on kickstarter as a deck of custom designed playing cards created by myself under the name 52ravens. Like my previous deck of cards, The Coven, the Sisterhood of Blood features an all female cast of court cards. Thanks to 493 amazing backers the project was successfully funded and 1500 decks went into production. Click here to see the original project page, pictures, reviews and project video.
During the design process I post artwork to a playing card forum to get a fresh set of eyes to help evolve the design. As a reward for people helping out I thought it would be nice to allow them to name the vampires on the cards, and this got me thinking about the stories behind the names.
At first, for the playing card project, I created a paragraph for each vampire that explained a little about them, but it wasn’t enough, I wanted to discover more about them and this book is the result.
If you would like to read an extract from the book, please click here. It focuses on Isabel Marshal, who isn't your typical vampire, and shows how her childlike mind copes when her only friend, and fellow sister of blood, has to leave London for good.
Alongside the stories I will be including the artwork of each of the vampires and their courts from the original playing card designs. They will be printed much larger than the original cards and this will help to give a better idea of what the vampires look like as well as hinting at the story to come.
* * ALL BOOK PLEDGES COME WITH AN EPUB/PDF VERSION * *
Paperback - This will be printed on cream uncoated stock, with black and white inside pages as you would expect from any paperback. From the test book I had printed the artwork looks great even in black and white. Depending on the projects success, this may be upgraded.
Hardback - Full colour printed inside pages have been made to look like the pages of an old book. The artwork really comes to life with the red popping out of the page. The cover is an image wrap design (no dust jacket) and has a soft matte finish. Once again, depending on the projects success, this may be upgraded.
Playing Cards - The perfect companion for the book. For those that missed out on the playing card project I’ve included a couple pledges that contain a deck of the original print run. One pledge for hardback and another for paperback. These pledges are limited as there is only a small amount of the decks left. Please click here to take a look at the kickstarter page at the link here to see the original playing card project.
Coin - A 1.5 inch antique brass coin. Many playing card projects offer this, I own some myself, they are a great keepsake. I feel it will tie in really nicely with one of the characters and will be a wonderful token that will make you feel as though you have a piece of the Sisterhood of Blood in the palm of your hands.
Signed Sisterhood of Blood Emblem - The Emblem will be hand stamped on parchment paper (may be upgraded to 100% cotton paper pending more experiments). Each one will be signed, numbered, wrapped in a hand made black card envelope and sealed with the 52 Ravens wax seal stamp. All of this will be handmade by myself and is exclusively for backers of this book project.
If you would like to make this part of your reward, please add an additional £10 to your current pledge - one per backer :)
I’m a graphic designer based in the UK with a hidden passion for writing. There is an ability I’ve alway admired of books, along side films, that they can take you away from the here and now, help you to discover new worlds, characters and events that you couldn’t possibly imagine.
I’m excited (and a little nervous) to share these 12 tales with the wider world. I truly hope you feel the same way and that you would like to support it by backing and sharing this campaign.
As long as the playing card community will have me, I will alway be a busy designer, but The Sisterhood of Blood - Volume One is just that, part one, and with your help I hope to release part two with a new deck of cards.

Risks and challenges
I’ve run two successful playing card projects here on Kickstarter, so I’m confident things will run smoothly. I always strive to give the backers as much information as possible when I receive updates on the printing process and during the shipping fulfilment stage, as I strongly believe that as a backer you are just as much a part of this project as I am.
The estimated delivery date is just that, an estimate, so there is a chance of an early delivery, or delay, but as always I will keep you all up to date no matter what happens.
