Do you often reminisce about what it was like "back in the day"? Have you ever thought to yourself...
"Wow, I sure do love this old school slow jam, but it would be nice to get a fresh new spin on it -- really flip the script and hear what it could sound like with vocals and guitar... maybe a few tasteful harmonies."?
I present to you Acoustic Throwback. Naked arrangements of your favorite 90s R&B jams. Let's take a ride on a six-string time machine back to when MTV still had videos, and you still had a landline phone (and an answering machine).
As much as I love to cover songs, I'm not a fan of most cover songs, because the majority just copy the original without adding anything new, and that's not what I'm after. Take this Mariah tune for example.
Honestly, I wasn't planning to Kickstart this project since I didn't want to overwhelm you, my biggest supporters, or make you feel like my hand was always out. But strangely, a lot of you asked me to launch on Kickstarter and I realized something. Crowdfunding isn't just about raising money, it's about the community and being invested in something WITH the artist. It's about being a part of the whole.
Also, let me add how grateful I am to have a job I love, where I get to dream up ridiculous stuff like this and have you along for the ride. It means more to me than you probably will ever know.
I have you to keep me grounded -- to remind me not to go chasing waterfalls.
Trying to narrow down my favorite 90s R&B songs is no easy task. I'm aiming for tracks that are recognizable with the occasional "deep cut", but would also translate well to a new acoustic arrangement. So, here's what I'm thinking. If the project is successfully funded, I will pick 6-7 songs, with 3 more songs being chosen by popular vote, and up to 3 additional songs chosen from the "Custom Song Request" backers for a total of at least 10-12 tracks. Here's a HUGE list of songs with YouTube links to get some ideas from.
I plan to have a LOT of cameos and have already started lining them up. As tempting as it is to tell you who all has agreed to do this, it's way more fun to leave you guessing : ]. Stay tuned throughout the funding period as I'll be announcing new guest artists every few days.

See if you can guess. These are just some of the people that *could* do it and have expressed interest. There's no guarantee all of these will work out due to scheduling and logistics, but I'm gonna try!
Stretch goals are rewards that everyone gets when the project funding reaches certain levels. So, if the project reaches...
$1,990 (REACHED) CARLTON DANCE - I'll post a video of me doing The Carlton Dance! (Couldn't fit it all on Instagram so decided to make it an official backer update).
$10,000 (REACHED) - EXTRA BONUS SONG not available anywhere else. Just for you lovely people!
$20,000 - NASHVILLE CD RELEASE SHOW. If we cross the $20k mark I'll throw a Nashville Release show. Backers at the $20 level and higher will get an invite and a plus one.
Here's a photo of me, from 1993, at my senior prom. My friend Samantha thought it would be fun to "do my hair", so I let her. Not sure what the bolo tie is all about.
Anyways, just wanted y'all to know you're in good hands.
Update #3 [6/24/14] - Passed the $16,000 mark, WOW! Revealed 2 of the special guests (Melissa Polinar, and Tony Lucca). Released a video update for backers only. Also, I started officially recording. Why wait until the funding deadline? I'm ready to do this!
Update #2 [6/11/14] - Added some hints to the special guest section below. See if you can figure out some of the cameos. Also, not even 24 hours yet and we just might pass the $10,000 mark! Unreal!
Update #1 [6/10/14] - Holy crap! Initial funding goal is history! We're at the 300% mark and it's still the first night! This project has got some legs. THANK YOU for getting involved and spreading the word! As promised I did The Carlton Dance as the first stretch goal reward. Check the UPDATES section for the video. Also, be sure to check the STRETCH GOALS section below as I'll be adding more of them as we reach them TOGETHER. Ok, now group hug. Bring it in....
Risks and challenges
An endeavor such as this won't be without certain challenges. Since I am not the copyright owner of these songs, proper steps must be taken to license the works so that the original authors get paid. (The statutory mechanical rate is currently 9.1 cents per song per unit sold). Fortunately, I'm familiar with the process by now.
I am REALLY excited and passionate about this project, for real.
LET'S DO THIS!
Big thank you to my friend Stephanie Orefice (@stephanieamber) who helped me shoot this Kickstarter video, and to many of you who've offered great feedback and suggestions along the way, you know who you are.
