The First Major Change to Impact the Aluminum Can since the Flip-Top. A Resealable Opening with Flow Control and NO Removable Parts.
The iCan journey began by Brian Bettis being frustrated with years of using the current aluminum can Flip Top opening that has had no major innovations, since the 1970’s to prevent spilling, keep the carbonation fresh and eliminate harmful bacteria and bugs from his beverage. Also seeing the progression from the original Pull-Tab to Flip-Top he, being an inventor for 30 years, had an idea that sparked! An intelligent change was needed and he believed he could achieve it. His idea: An All-Aluminum Twist-Top Resealable Opening with Flow Control and No Removable Parts!
Please experience the journey with us, recently featured on and working with:
The iCan Twist-Top was first developed and conceived in early 2009 by Brian Bettis. The premier design for the iCan Twist-Top was first created by Mr. Bettis himself with his CAD 3-Dimensional Design program. First the basic construction of the existing aluminum can was created for diameter and dimension reference points. Then the iCan Twist-Top was designed around the standard aluminum can (whether it be in 8oz, 12oz, 16oz, 24oz, etc.) for the simple fact that he did not want to change the whole can but simply improve on the top’s distribution method while keeping overall manufacturing process, weight and cost similar with minimal change. The design started with a three piece valve concept:
The Dream Is To Make a Redefined and Restructured, Resealable Twist-Top For Your Beverages with Flow Control!! A recent featured article on the front page of the business section explains some of the journey.
The developmental goals were to produce the iCan Twist-Top with adding minimal weight to the lid, keep it stackable for packaging/distribution and keep manufacturing costs similar to the existing aluminum can lids currently in production.
We believe that this is all achievable. Let’s address these issues.
1.Weight: The design of the iCan Twist-Top is constructed with similar thickness and tinsel strength of the current tab that is scored to open the Flip-Top. Thus achieving the goal to keep similar weight and increase structural integrity. The thickness of the smooth mouthpiece valve opening is user friendly unlike the current Flip Top tab hole.
2.Stackability and Packaging: iCan Twist-Top is also reverse engineered to stack for distribution, packaging and retail along with vending. Reason being the domed mouthpiece is structured to fit the current aluminum can’s cylindrical bottom dome therefore not changing the current methods. The creation of the iCan Twist-Top is a mouthpiece user friendly opening that is smooth, glass bottle like.
3.Cost: When iCan Twist-Top is introduced to the Mass Market the overall cost of manufacturing will be within acceptable standards per can. This goal is achieved by using only 100% aluminum material for the iCan Twist-Top which is 100% recyclable and manufactory reusable. In fact manufacturers prefer to use recycled aluminum rather than raw material. The process of making a can starts with 2 ton rolls of Aluminum sheeting which is like cookie sheet cut-outs to form the body of the can which is the coupler. There's plan abundance of wasted Aluminum material but it is scrapped and melted to be recycled and re rolled into new sheets. That process is a contributing factor of where the aluminum is returned to the complete lifecycle of an aluminum beverage container and ultimately remolded for more aluminum can production units. The complete lifecycle, up to where the lids are attached at the beverage manufacturer’s plants, can be seen by clicking the following YouTube link. It is highly informative and educational. It is the complete process except for the lids and that is where the iCan Twist-Top comes into the manufacturing phase. Unfilled cans are shipped to the beverage companies and then filled with their beverage and sealed with the Tops/Lids to complete the can manufacturing process packaged and then are ready for distribution.
After designing the iCan Twist-Top; creating schematics and renderings he initiated a team that involved leading patent attorneys to complete a full patent search for all prior or existing developments. The concluded results were optimistic for the right to secure the initial iCan Twist-Top provisional patent. The iCan Twist-Top provisional patent was filed, accepted and secured.
The next step after finalizing the provisional patent and the design of the iCan Twist-Top was the prototyping phase. Countless hours, years and materials were used to figure out how not to do it. The overall prototyping of a product that would be geared potentially for 100’s of billions of units per year, had to be KISS’d (Kept Simple). After the trials and errors, finally we believe we succeeded and the working prototype has emerged. Each part was hand made in several steps at different machine shops. The engineering and the manufacturing process was kept proprietary and each individual part of the iCan Twist-Top prototype is engineered for working functionality for mass production.
We now have the working prototype, have secured the team of engineers and aligned ourselves with domestic and overseas manufacturers that will complete the first production run of iCan Twist-Top units for sales samples, presentations and for iCan Twist-Top rewards to our pledges. Our engineers and manufacturing team will finalize the tools that will implement and adapt to the machines that will produce the production run and will integrate into the machinery that is currently used in the aluminum canning process. These tools and our proprietary technologies will adapt without major changes to worldwide manufacturers current and successful production lines. The exclusive iCan Twist-Top design will be opted for non-exclusive or exclusive licensing to manufacturers in both industries beverages/paint distributors as well as our proprietary designs and tool integrations.
Through years of experience of bringing products from concept to market and dedicated involvement with every stage from prototyping, tooling, protecting the ideas, manufacturing, shipping and ultimately fulfilling the product to you our backer, all steps will be handled with care by our experienced team. We currently reside in Savannah, Georgia, which has a large port and many fulfillment/warehousing companies which we will utilize.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The major risk involved in this project is convincing industries that haven't fundamentally changed in thirty years to adapt to our iCan Twist-Top solution. This isn't something that's a small feat, we're talking about 476,000,000,000 aluminum cans being produced every year as of four years ago. Still we do have our niche to introduce our product and with hard work and dedication we will be part of the major manufacturer's product lines.
The challenge will be securing a limited amount of non-exclusive contractual agreements with specialty beverage companies (Energy Drinks, Teas, Coffees, Supplement Water, Speciality Craft Breweries, Malt Liquor, Wine, etc.) both domestically and internationally without jeopardizing a potential exclusive contractual agreement with a major beverage manufacturing company (Coca-Cola, Pepisco, Budweiser, Coors etc.) or aluminum canning manufacturer (Ball, Alcoa, Rexam, etc.).
Specialty beverage companies have taken a nice share of the marketplace in the last generation. These newwave companies charge a premium price for their beverages and we believe they will embrace the marketability and the "WOW" factor that the iCan Twist-Top will offer to their distributors and consumers. We will be seeking and actively securing non-exclusive licensing agreements right from the start. With our eyes down the road we will be focusing on integrating the iCan Twist-Top with the Majors in the industry. Such leaders in the marketplace from a marketing point of view should be looked at as leaders of new innovation. Stepping up to show their consumers in the industry new changes, potentially licensing not only the iCan Twist-Top design but integrate our proprietary adaptive tooling with their current manufacturers process'. iCan's goals are keeping the costs/weight per unit similar to the existing standards, while bringing home the next big change in the Beverage/Canning Industries.

Sean M Tuohy says: Do you know an approximate percentage of weight increase? Because a few grams sounds pretty substantial in an industry that deals with billions of pounds of aluminum. I think you have a great idea for upgrading cans but I feel an increa
Good Points Thanks, You have to think about marketing aka Coors with temperature printing, the new Miller shot gun Hole, The aluminum bottles etc., in any companies future there must be a WOW thats A New Idea Good for marketing to their consumers. The added weight means nothing to them what it does mean is a new punch line "We At XYZ Company Are Doing This For You! Are Customers" Keeping it FRESH!! Good for everyone... Every product needs change it just so happens there hasn't been enough in the can business it's time... Again thank you for your questions I hope that helps.
Please pledge it will happen..

Cameron McEwen says: Question 1. How well do they stack? traditional cans stack quite nicely your video isn't very clear as to how drastic that top is will it nest inside the bottom of another can? Question 2. How the heck do you drink out of the center
Good questions, Thank you.
1. The dome mouthpiece was designed the reversed dimensions, to nest perfectly, your right it should have been in the video however we did address this in the copy.
2. The great thing about the dome mouth piece is it feels like drinking out of a bottle, and the flow is great and controllable.
Again thank you for your questions and for taking the time. We really hope you can spread the word and even pledge
