About this project
The Project: Turtle/Turtle is a minimilist toy, child's seat and decorative interior object. We think objects for kids should be well designed too, so it was designed with the same care, materials and details as the high-end modern furniture that we normally design. Like the Eames's Elephant designed in the 1940's, Turtle/Turtle is a hybrid object that can be used for play or decoration. It's a gift that you can give to a child that they can keep for life.
The Inspiration: The original Turtle/Turtle prototype was created for a charity auction called Faces in the Wild with proceeds to benefit the World Wildlife Fund. Each auction participant was asked to choose an endangered species as the subject of their creation. Sea turtles were a good subject because they pre-date dinosaurs but are currently critically endangered.
As a father of a young daughter, I wanted to create something that she would enjoy playing with and would also be an awesome modern decorative element when it wasn't in use. I had two pieces made - one for the auction and one as a gift for her - that's her in the photo below. She loved her turtle and so did our friends. We thought it would make a perfect gift and decided to produce more. We have launched on Kickstarter to raise funds to develop the product.
The Design: The design has a simple, graphic aesthetic and premium, furniture inspired materials. Made from powder coated steel rod and saddle leather, it's durable and will patina nicely over time. The dimensions are 25"x19"x6" / 63cmx48cmx15cm. The paint coating is water based and non-toxic.
The Goal: Backers of this project will be helping to create the first serial production run of the Turtle/Turtle project. Backers pledge to pay for their selected reward only if we meet the funding goal of $7,500 so every pledge counts. If you pledge $150 or more, you will be pre-ordering one of the first Turtle/Turtles ever produced. Funds will go directly to the materials, labor, packaging and shipping of the project. A successful showing on Kickstarter will also help us to convince potential distributors that this is a commercially viable product. We need your support to help a good design become a market reality. We expect Turtle/Turtle to retail for well over $200, so this is a significant savings and a chance for you to own one of the first and help a cool design become a market reality.
Limited: Exclusive to Kickstarter, we are offering a limited edition of 20 Turtle/Turtles. If you pledge $300 you can own a collectable design object signed and numbered by the designer. These will have a special matte white frame, white Spinneybeck belting leather and the thread color of your choice.
Thanks: With the constant negativity about the economy it's inspiring to have a platform like Kickstarter as a new model to cultivate great ideas. Thanks in advance for helping make Turtle/Turtle a reality. I'm humbled by your support and I hope that you or someone you love enjoys Turtle/Turtle.
Yes please. This is the only way for us to track the limited editions and the 25 that will ship before Christmas.
It's tested up to 180lbs - I sat on it!
Yes, we're pre-building 30 pieces to be shipped before Christmas. This is possible for shipping within the USA only.
Amazon.com processes all the pledges on Kickstarter. When you decide to make a pledge, we’ll quickly take you to Amazon.com to confirm. If you have an Amazon.com account this takes only a few clicks. If you don’t have an Amazon.com account, Amazon will ask you to register during the pledge process, but it’s relatively painless. You won’t need to do anything annoying (like stop in the middle and check your email).Funding ends when time expires. At that point one of two things happens: If a project has reached or exceeded its funding goal when time expires, all backers’ credit cards are instantly charged and funds go directly to the project creator. If funding doesn’t succeed, all pledges are immediately canceled like nothing ever happened. That’s it!
Yes, gladly! We may request additional funds to pay for the added cost. Expect $25 -$35 dollars more depending on the country of delivery. Canada and Puerto Rico will likely be shipped at no additional cost.
