About

Kizomba is a dance from Angola that has been gaining in popularity all over the world, and “Kizomba Seattle” is one of the first US communities to fall in love with this dance. Seattle is a city of diverse dance communities and I would like to make Seattle even more of a destination for kizomba dancers. These exchange events will help develop and connect the growing kizomba communities across the US and beyond.

Over the last three years, our community has worked together: teaching each other the dance and hosting many of Europe’s top instructors. Now, its time to try a different event, one more focused on what we love so much: the dancing and the community. We want to celebrate the social aspect of  dancing.

This weekend follows in the footsteps of the “Lindy Exchange”, a gathering of lindy-hop dancers from across America for several days to experience the dance venues and styles of that locale, and to dance with visitors and locals alike. Unlike a congress, which has classes and workshops held in a hotel, this weekend focuses on the social dancing and community that we've built around kizomba. Dances will be held at different locations around Seattle and we will connect visitors to local residents, who will host them for the duration of the exchange.

The Kizomba Seattle Exchange will consist of:

  • Seven dances over three days
  • 8-12 hours of dancing each day in different locations around Seattle
  • DJ’s from the East Coast and our very own local DJ’s

You can visit www.kizombaseattleexchange.com for more details about the weekend.

In order to keep costs reasonable for dancers, we are raising money to:

  • Cover the costs for the visiting DJ’s
  • Give free entry to the volunteers that are helping with the event
  • Provide food and snacks at the dances and parties to help keep people fueled as they dance till dusk

Risks and challenges

I've been running events successfully to promote and build kizomba in the Seattle community and have been privileged to have the support of a very generous group.
There's really no risk to funding this event: We are already scheduled at the different venues and the visiting DJ’s have committed to coming. This event will run and it is our hope that we will be able to welcome dancers from other Kizomba communities around the US and internationally so that we can make this commemorative event unforgettable.

Our challenge is to get visitors from out of town to come to Seattle and dance. Seattle is a city filled with all kinds of dancing and our kizomba group is one of many different dance communities that are alive and well within it. Despite the multitude of dances available, Seattle is not normally thought of as a destination city for dancing.

Our hope is that, by running an event like this, we will be able to show how much fun our local kizomba community is and form stronger connections to the kizomba communities across the US and abroad.
