Holly grew up as an only child. One day a woman appears claiming to be her identical twin. Mystery, violence and revelations ensue.
For the last two years I've been writing, sweating, scheming and drafting up a film called Out of the Trees. I want to make a movie that will make the viewer think AND entertain the hell out of them. Get the audience's heart rate up to a dangerous level and make them scream inside a crowded theater "Ah! I didn't see it coming!" Personally, I'm not a big fan of low-budget movies that are slow-moving, filled with long conversations or leave me depressed at the end. I hope to combine the rebellious flair that I love about indies with the excitement of a classic Hollywood thriller, creating a unique hybrid of awesomeness.
Out of the Trees is a feature film about Holly, her mysterious father, and a buried secret. Holly grew up as an only child in New York City, until a woman appears claiming to be her identical twin sister—Dasie. Dasie is a strange girl who's spent her life trapped in her father's farmhouse, shielded from the outside world. She's escaped the farm to find her sister. Holly travels with Dasie to the remote forest to confront her father and uncover his secrets. As she learns about the family she never knew, Holly's father traps her in the dark forest. Holly begins to find the truth, but it's more than she can handle. Can she escape her father and save her sister while keeping her sanity?
I'm an award-winning writer/director and I've done lots of movies and other creative stuff, but ever since I was fourteen, my dream has always been to make a feature film. I wrote this suspenseful thriller and put together an amazing team of producers, composers, cinematographers and actors. We can't wait to make this thing, to put something out there that's really exciting and unique.
Before I keep blabbing, take a look at this scene from the movie. Last October, we decided to go out and shoot one sequence from the film beforehand to give you guys a sense of what the finished thing will look like. This was made with a lot of favors and little cash, so imagine what we can make with your help!
How This Crazy Film Came to Be
Once the script was done, we went to work, searching for the pair of identical twin sisters that would play the lead characters, Holly and Dasie. It was clear that these actresses would make the film unique, that the success of the project would rest on them. A cross-country casting search began. The roles call for a wide acting range, so the twins needed to be proficient actors. We auditioned over a dozen pairs of twins and combed through dozens of submissions. Some worry grew inside our nervous bellies: do they even exist? In mid 2012, the Carvalho twins were auditioned and there was no doubt about it: they had found Holly and Dasie. They describe the experience:
“From the first page, the script grabbed us. It’s rare for us to come across a script that is great and has twins in it. The most interesting thing about it is that it explores the secrets of an unconventional family and in turn tests the audience, prompting them to question what they would do and how they would respond. We’re so grateful to be a part of it.”
Before I tell you what the film is about and introduce you to the team, allow me to share a couple of our awesome rewards. If you donate $40, you'll get a DVD, a couple goodies, and this poster...
Some lucky backers will join us for a screening party in the forest. Imagine being surrounded by trees, good food, and a flickering movie screen...
What This Thing is About
Good question. Watch this 1 minute storyboard sequence to find out...
Holly is living a normal life in New York City until a woman approaches her claiming to be her identical twin sister. It’s hard to disagree: they look completely alike. From that point on, Holly’s life will never be the same. As her reality becomes unhinged, she attempts to solve the mystery surrounding her family, hidden somewhere in the trees.
Out of the Trees is a unique spin on a suspenseful thriller. The film takes the idea of a dysfunctional family and goes in surprising new directions. Filled with tense, strange, mysterious scenes, Out of the Trees is about a decision many of us must make: do I reach out to others or do I stay isolated, comfortable, and alone? It takes place mostly at one location (house, surrounding woods) and is designed to be made on a very low budget. Find out more at www.OutoftheTrees.com .
How We'll Use the Money
$18,000 is our bare minimum goal, the lowest number we can make this film for. My co-producers Emily and Vanessa have expertly put together a budget and schedule for the film. We plan on shooting 20-25 days. $18,000 will give us what we need to feed the crew for those days, rent camera equipment, trucks and lights, pay SAG minimum rates to the principle actors, and secure production insurance. Luckily, this film is simple on the surface, and was written as an ultra-low budget film. It features only four characters and only one main location of the farmhose and surrounding woods. Still, this tiny budget will require us to call in a lot of favors, so if we can exceed our goal, we'll be able to actually pay our crew something and hire more of them. This budget does not include a budget for the film's score (see risks section). Not a cent of this money will go to me or to my personal expenses, it all goes to the film.
Who the Hell Are We?
Dylan Tuccillo (writer, director, co-producer): I'm an NYC-based writer/director. As a teenager, I made various short films, including an animation that won first place at the UMW Film Festival. I then studied at NYU Tisch Film School, where I wrote feature screenplay “The Art of Underwater Navigation” about a submarine inventor, which won a $10,000 award from the Sloan Foundation in 2007. Since graduation, my short film “Omie Wise” has earned respect from film festivals across the country, and has won awards at the Las Vegas Film Festival and the First Run Film Festival. In 2011, my music video “Bowery and Bleeker” won first place in a contest at the NYC radio station RXP, securing a studio recording deal for the band. I recently made another short called Four Down, about to make festival rounds.
Zachary Mcgeehan (Cinematographer) studied film and television at Boston University. In his career as a cinematographer and gaffer, he had the opportunity to work with casts such as Jerry Stiller, Anne Mira, Luis Guzman, Jerry O’Connel, Justin Long, among others. His cinematography exploits include two feature-length documentaries “Hedfux” and “Downeast”, one feature narrative "Beast of Cardo", as well as fourteen short films including “Hopeless Romantic“, “Please Say a Command“, and “Cowboy Café”. He has worked with all the mediums cinema has to offer: 35 and 16mm film, the Scarlet and Epic RED cameras, Cannon DSLR’s, etc. See his reel at here.
Vanessa Souza D'Alessio (co-producer): Vanessa worked at Clear Channel, Emmis Communication where she was involved in radio & television productions, shows, and interviews for singers such as Fat Joe, Kenya West and Katy Perry. She obtained additional experience at IFC/Sundance Channel, where she focused her career towards the film, documentary, and the TV show industry and at TRu TV via the series “The Smoking Gun Presents…”. Today, Vanessa is producing several film projects to focus her career on this part of the media industry.
Emily Foley (co-producer): Emily is a producer living in the Bronx. She has served on set as a line producer but often wears many hats at once, because of the nature of ultra-low budget films. Her experience is mostly on set, working on many feature films including “Halloween Party”, “Mark and Anna's” and “A Case of You”.
Ben Crippin Taylor (composer): Ben is a talented LA-based composer and has worked on the music for various television shows including “New Girl” (Fox), “Chaos” (CBS), “Inbetweeners” (MTV), “The Event” (NBC), and “Supernatural” (The CW). He has scored eleven short films, including “Black Bird”, “Crushing Violet”, and Dylan's film “Omie Wise”. He recently jammed with Prince. Visit his website to listen to his work.
Ashley & Kimberly Carvalho (lead actresses): The Carvalho's are identical twin sisters who trained together at CCSU. Projects in the past include films like “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past”, “Preconceptions” and “Single Number”. Their theater performances include the Sleep No More “Carnival”, “As You Like it”, and “The Seagull”. Visit their website!
Please take a look at our great rewards to the right, which you'd get in return for donating. Remember, we won't get any of the money we raise unless we reach or exceed our goal of $18,000. Thanks so much for helping make this a reality!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Challange #1: We hope to shoot this film in October. We'll do everything we can to make that happen if funded. The cast and crew who are currently attached have made themselves available for these windows. However, we have not casted our other two leads yet, the characters Bill and Abbot. We hope to attract great actors, and great actors can be busy.
There is a chance that we find the perfect people to play the roles but they are unavailable this year, pushing us back until next spring, summer or even the fall of 2014. We'll do what we can to avoid this--not only would it be annoying for you to have to wait so long for rewards, but the project's momentum would die down a little and no one wants that.
Challange #2: After the film is shot and edited, we'll need to develop the score. If we meet but do not exceed our bare minimum goal of $18k, and if no additional funds are raised outside of Kickstarter, we won't have enough money to produce the score. So at this point we'll send a survey to our backers with two options A) Do you want to receive the film now with temporary music or B) Would you like to wait until the score is complete to receive the film? The majority answer to the survey will decide the issue for everyone; we won't work on a case-by-case basis.
Apart from these two concerns, there are always many obstacles in the movie making process, but no foreseeable problems that will stop this film from being finished, or from delivering on the rewards promised. This is a huge dream of ours, so if anyone stands in our way, they better bring a lot of ammo.
