Hi. I'm Joshua Kubli of Imperfekt Gammes, and I'm here today to talk about my super hero roleplaying game, Invulnerable.
WHAT IS THIS?
Invulnerable is a tabletop roleplaying game that uses six-sided dice, and allows you to create and play your own comic book super hero characters. You envision your hero's adventures by imagining yourself a part of their world, describing their actions. My goal in creating Invulnerable was to create a traditional super hero RPG with simple, math-light character creation, versatile heroes, and awesome action.
HOW DOES THIS GAME WORK?
You make a character by selecting an Awesomeness Level, choosing an Origin, and choosing two Motivations. Your hero's Awesomeness Level gives you points to spend to increase your hero's Attributes, Talents, and Powers.
Every hero gains Enhancements for their Powers, special tricks that others with the same Power might not know! Many of the Powers and Enhancements you're likely to see in comics, cartoons, and movies are ready for you to select, and it's easy to add more.
Motivations reflect your hero's inspiration and moral code. Your hero's Motivation shows us why your hero puts on a costume and risks their life fighting evil. Since heroes have two Motivations, it also shows why heroes are conflicted, why heroes don't always see eye to eye with one another. A hero's Motivations are an integral part of who they are, and they give your hero the strength to fight their utmost.
The combat system is intense and gritty, with optional rules for lighter, four-color play. I believe that what makes super heroes heroic is the very real danger they face; and I believe that what makes them Invulnerable isn't their powers, but their courage and their spirit. Invulnerable includes a complete world setting, Earth-Omega, with over two dozen heroes and villains written up and ready to play, a detailed timeline, and important locations described. I love both the silliness of the Silver Age, the stylized hyper-action of the Iron Age, and the modern, deconstructionist trend in comics, so Earth-Omega is a loving homage to all these comic genres.
"Year One Edition" has been out for two years now, for sale on DriveThruRPG, RPGNow, Paizo, Indie Press Revolution, and Createspace. It's done well, but it's time for a new release. I would like to release Invulnerable RPG: Vigilante Edition with a new cover, lots more interior artwork, and better editing and layout. If this Kickstarter funds, Invulnerable will go into print distribution with Chronicle City, a very exciting prospect.
I have some fantastic artists lined up! Jason Juta will provide the new cover (he did that banner, check it out!). Joel Biske is working on the interior page borders right now, and interior art will be provided by folks like Jason, Joel, industry veterans Bradley McDevitt, Marco Morte, and Khairul Hisham, rising star Gennifer Bone, and indie comics artist Elijah Brubaker.
$6,500: At this point, we can fund a new edition of the Invulnerable supplement Dauntless, which includes new Origins, Powers, heroes and villains, and a full adventure, "Destroyer of Worlds." Dauntless: Vigilante Edition will also fold in the rules from the free Nigh-Invulnerable supplement, which allow for random character creation. Also re-edited, with a new cover and better artwork as well, Dauntless will be an even better companion to the core Invulnerable rulebook.
$11,750: At this level, we'll produce an all-new book, Grim Visage of Justice, with an all-star cast of writers! I have lined up:
- Eloy Lasanta of Third Eye Games, author of Wu Xing and Part-Time Gods.
- Chris Helton of the Dorkland Blog and Battlefield Press, writer for the 4C system.
- Michael Garcia of Dead Rat Publishing and formerly of Occult Moon.
- Rafael Chandler, author of the OSR monster book Teratic Tome, plus the multi-genre supplement Roll XX, and RPG Spite.
- Steven Schend, long-time writer for the Marvel Super Heroes RPG for TSR.
$14,250: At this level, we'll release the Dirge Dark Modern Fantasy RPG. Sharing the Cosmology RPG Engine with Invulnerable, Dirge lets you play a mind-warped Mystic, a flesh-rending Ghûl, or a fallen Child of Light. In this horror-tinged setting, Heaven's eternal war against the forces of darkness has been lost, the Hierate Cult conspiracy controls the world, and all is seemingly lost, except for dark heroes who fight to save themselves.
In addition, if the Kickstarter funds, all text in all books will be released under the Open Game License, so everyone can all write and sell compatible game material.
We have a reasonable timeline, that should allow us to begin shipping print copies 6 months after project completion, barring unforeseen issues. We aren't racing to meet a con deadline, and assuming we have your correct address, you will not -- you WILL NOT -- see a copy in stores before your print copy is in hand.
If we fully fund, there will be four books, including the Invulnerable core. What if you want the add-on books in print? For an additional $20 each, if you pledge enough get a PDF copy of Dauntless: Vigilante Edition, Grim Visage of Justice, or Dirge, you may add on a softcover print copy. Please be sure to specify that you want this tier by e-mail, and which books you want!
US and UK backers, shipping is free!
European and Canadian backers, please add $10USD for shipping. All other backers, please add $20USD for shipping. Sorry, but we've got to be able to cover our costs to give you the best product possible!
Ten percent of all money from print and PDF sales of Invulnerable: Vigilante Edition (after the Kickstarter is complete) will go to Doctors Without Borders, also known as Médecins Sans Frontières. These people are real-life heroes, and we can make the world a better place by helping them. Even if you don't donate toward this Kickstarter, please consider donating to MSF at https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/donate/onetime.cfm?
TO SUM UP
So if you'd like to try a super hero RPG with simple character creation, versatile heroes, combat that doesn't pull any punches, and a fun setting, then I really hope you'll give Invulnerable a try.
Everyone deserves a chance to

Risks and challenges
Producing an RPG book has several stages; editing, writing, commissioning art, and layout. Delays can occur at any stage. We've tried to build in generous timelines and extra "slippage weeks" to account for problems at any stage.
Invulnerable, Dauntless, and Dirge are all completely written. Invulnerable has been updated for the new edition, finished one round of editing, and is in a second round right now. Grim Visage of Justice is about 20% written, and the remainder will be written by the stretch goal authors. Although disasters can happen, timelines can slip, and writers and artists may have life issues come up, the project itself is a pretty done deal.
Finally, for pledges that include print copies, there are often delays with printers. If the print test copies aren't satisfactory, that means making changes and ordering another round of print test copies. By this time, the backers should have their PDFs, but it's still a possible delay that's hard to guard against. Nevertheless, it's more a matter of getting a great-looking product to the backers, rather than an issue of not producing at all.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
